The other one didn't exactly suck, but I think the new one is much better.
and I always used the basic blue background, don't remeber which number it was. |

Dragonsbrethren, I like your cabin much more. Viewing it edge-on fits in perfectly with the tent graphic.
As for the text backgrounds, I don't have the numbers memorized so I'll have to load up the game again. The ones I remember liking were the basic (default) gradient, the black-and-blue "watery" one, the "wood" one, and one of the other metallic looking ones. What would be really great is if you could change the color of not just the font, but the shadow (below and to the right of the text) as well. When I first played FF3, I was trying to get the text to be dark on a light background, but since the shadow is black no matter what you do, it never looks right. Let us make the shadow a different color! |

Actually, I'm not sure how something like that would work. We'd have to throw in another set of 3 numbers to tweak the shadow, then probably make some changes so everything else doesn't look at that value. (At this point I'm going to assume that the shadow is shared by everything in the menu.)
I think it'll be harder than it's worth, but I guess it's worth at least looking into. |

Actually, I have a different approach, every time you decrease a color value of the font it will increase that same value in the shadow, that way one set of values in the menu would control both. Still, I'm not sure if this is worth it, we'd probably want to tweak the grey used for icons using this method as well, that's even more coding, I'll leave that decision up to you. Speaking of palette hacking, I have a few aesthetic tweaks for the menus, I'll run them by you later.

I'm very much looking forward to these aesthetic hacks no matter which way you end up going.
If you do something like this for the upcoming FFVI GBA version, I might just play that instead of the "regular" edition. |

What did you change in that event..?

In every version of the game, Japanese, all three US versions, and RPGONE's retranslation, Terra never said "No! Get away from me!" The line was left in, but never used.
There will be some minor event changes in the future (when something should or shouldn't be said for example). For the most part, unless you are really paying attention, they'll go unnoticed. Despite how big this project is going to be, it'll all be worth it. (edited by Leno_jr on 05-16-06 11:24 PM) |

Dammit Leno... that's all it was? I could have told you that the other day. I was looking for something more subtle.

You just gave me a great idea, why didn't I think of this sooner, no one liked that old chocobo background anyway
Actually, I liked it quite a bit. If you changed the palette properly, you got a nice background of ghosts that worked well for the haunted locations. ---T.Geiger |

Demon Chocobos! (Still hard as hell to read on though, especially with the thinner font) |

Ghosts And I find it to be fairly readable during full screen play (though its hard on the eyes in that shot). ---T.Geiger |

If there was one thing that always bugged the hell outta me in FF6, it was the character portraits the characters had on the menu screen. I dunno, they didn't really fit in that well with the rest of the game in my opinion. Any other FF game as well, come to think about it.
So it might just be my opinion, but if you're willing to accept, I'll design some custom chracter portraits for the project and put them up for use. =P |

Not trying to bootleg your thread, but I'm actually doing just that [note; very WIP], Metal Knuckles. Up for anyone who'd want them when I'm done. I agree that the portraits in FF3/6 were absolutely horrible, looked like shitty color-reduced scans.
Oh, and nothing can redeem that shit chocobo layout. I liked the lightning-ish one best. and the tree one. if I'm even thinking of the same game. I"ll ahve to go check later. |

The "demon Chocobos" are very scary... I think I'm probably lucky I never saw that layout.

Be shocked and amazed or something, left is old, right is new:
It's almost perfect, very close (regarding the above screenshots). The monsters in the old set aren't even correct, so disregard those. *falls asleep* |

Okay, for some reason I keep looking at the Lvlx spells and seeing Lv1x... might it be better to either write out "Level" or abbreviate it back to either L. or LV.?
Otherwise, it looks pretty good. |
