Pastor rejects lottery winner's initial donation as not generous enough.
Although I partly understand the Pastor's point in saying that the donation was but a token, and also understand that a charity or organization never is *obligated* to take donations, but Im still puzzled and oddly infuriated by his behavior. |

When you said "cracked-out cleric" I thought you were talking about Colin.
I kid, I kid. Honestly, I think that asking for $90,000 (5% of what she won, as the pastor had suggested) was a bit ridiculous. But then, I tend to focus more on the value of the donation in such a situation, and how much it would help with... whatever it's intended to help with (I don't know what a church uses the money for =/) than I do on the generosity itself (though I look at that too). So, a $5,000 gift wouldn't be particularly generous, given how much money she had come into, but I'm sure it would help quite a bit; I'd gratefully accept it. |

And you wonder why we have things like Scientology. |

I don't think it's nice for any charitable organisation to ask for more money, in any situation. Yes, $5,000 may not be all that much compared to what she could potentially offer, but that's no reason to ask / demand / milk her for more money.
There may be all kinds of reasons why a person may not wish to donate such a large amount to a charity or organisation. They might have a lot of other charities they need to donate it to. They might be holding off while they work out how best to invest and spend their money (and are therefore giving a token in the meantime till they have their head around things better) etc. That said, it's not anything more than simple rudeness that they asked for more. |

I'd say Cleric, they get the Mace of Contrition, Firestorm, Serpent Staff......huh? We're not talking about Hexen?
That would make me mad. I try to donate something, and they say it's not good enough? I say that guy just wanted more money... (edited by ||EyeL E Ss|| on 05-06-06 03:07 PM) |

I can understand the Pastor's position.
I'm not giving any opinion on tithes or religion in general. But, its my understanding that the purpose of tithes (actually 10%) is less about the church receiving money than it is about the parishioner giving it up. Its about sacrifice, like fasting. By giving up 10% of the money you get, you're showing you love God more than money, and have trust (and faith) in God to return it to you "pressed down, shaken together, and running over". Apparently, when figuring her tithes for the winnings, that in the eyes of the church, and probably her own, were the result of God's favor, she decided she didn't trust in God that much. Not accepting the 0.27%, was simply telling her, this doesn't count as a sacrifice. To me he would have been more greedy to accept the $5000, since he had no way of knowing she would come back with more. (edited by emcee on 05-09-06 03:24 AM) |

Originally posted by emcee But this makes an assumption -- that the Pastor believed that the $5,000 was the ONLY sacrifice this person was making. Yes, it might have been the one that THEY saw, but what if they had made a $100,000 donation to a Children's Hospital or somesuch as well? Does that mean they don't love God enough too?? Now, not that this was the actual case, but I still think it's rude for the Pastor to have made the assumption that the $5,000 was the only donation that this person was making to anybody, full stop. |

Maybe he asked, the article doesn't really say.
I'm only saying his action were more likely due to his beliefs than greed. I'm not saying whether or not his beliefs were right. |

Without commenting on whether or not the priest was justified in his request, I will openly wonder what the woman's thought process was. Surely, with such an enormous prize, is $5000 much more than a token gesture (as has been pointed out)? Is it so she can say that she's donated to the church, and nothing more? Any parish would love a sudden $5000 increase to their funds but, in some sense, such a relatively small sum is a bit of a slap in the face, I think. |
