Apparently a device has been developed that emits a high frequency buzzing noise to drive away teenagers. I guess this is to stop teens hanging around when they're not wanted or something.
Article: "What's the buzz? Teens can't stand it Personally, I think this kinda sucks. I think it's very rude and discriminatory to subject teenagers to this -- it seems like the equivalent to those devices you use to get rid of insects or something. According to the article, it could also scare away legitimate customers and stuff not in their teens too. What do you think? |

Right! ..
I think it's a pretty silly idea if you ask me. Surely if the teenagers are distressing the stores owners that much, they can call the police or security instead of using an annoying and irritating sound that could infact drive away customers. I can see a device like this being used for all the wrong reasons and abused. |

My problem with it is that:
There's no guarantee it will only drive away teenagers AND It will affect ALL teenagers and children, regardless of whether they're troublemakers or not. And I think it's fairly discriminiatory to come up with a blanket solution that will affect most people under thirty... regardless of whether those people are causing the original problem in the first place or not. |

While I greatly dislike teenagers in general (having served one too many unruly ones at work), I used to be one, and thus can see how wrong this really is. It just seems really inhumane, treating them all like common household pests, regardless of whether they're causing trouble or not. I wouldn't want to shop there, just for that reason.

Originally posted by Tarale Exactly, just because older people can't hear it doesn't mean it isn't damaging their ears. I think they will need to do a lot more testing, if this is ever to offically come out .. which I hope it doesn't. |

I´m quite sensitive to high frequent noises so it´d probably work on me.
Still, I think the idea of it is unnecessary. |

I prefer the shotgun method of driving teenagers away (shooting them in the face etc.)

I'd think most people would have the sense to just run away when a shotgun's pulled out. And for those who don't, consider it "aiding natural selection".
But yeah, on a serious note, I don't like this. Don't be a fucking wimp about unwanted loiterers. Get a weapon and scare them away, if htat's legal where you live. And if not, I'm sure the police would do something. There's no need to stupidly resort to something that would drive away potential customers and non-troublemakers as well as the ones you seek to get rid of. |

That's awesome. I'm a teen that hates most teens (because most of the ones I see every day are complete assholes). We could use several hundred of those all across town.

You know, this will affect most Young adults and probably a quite few adults too. I still can hear faint high pitched noises from monitors and such so... eh. -.- I guess I belong to the group who is between Teenager and Young adult. If stores install thoose, i'm pretty sure that I would be affected by it. But hey, if they want less customers then... And it can have the opposite effect tahn intended. I'm pretty sure a few aggresive... inviduals get so annoyed with the "noise" that they... (edited by Ailure on 11-30-05 09:12 AM) |

This is the kind of thing I'd buy a weapon (or just grab some stupid rock) and destroy on site.
I mean hey, it's destroying my own property (namely, my ears), so I'll return the favor. (on a side note, this guy needs shot) |

Exactly, another small, annoying shit that needs wiping, like cameras. I don't steal or harass anyone in public, so it would be stupid to have these in stores. Then again, my neck of the woods is full of drug addicts and annoying 15-year olds.

Uhh guys... You're forgetting something...
You're all humans, you have brains, use them. Ear plugs, head phones with music blasting, a car with music blasting loud enough, all of these SHOULD be able to drown out a high pitched buzzing sound. Geeze... |
