So I'd have to write programs that run on (or can be compiled for) both Windows and Linux. Realistically this means using some form of wrapper (especially for GUIs) that would let me use the same code for both, like GTK. Problem there is I've never seen one of these in which the Windows version doesn't suck ass. Maybe I could write my own if I really need to, but ehh...

Try using Qt, it's pure awesome. On Unixes, it looks like whatever the hell you want. On Mac OS X, it looks indistinguishable from a native Aqua application. On Windows, it looks -- guess what -- just like native Win32!! And the API is marvelous, best API of all GUI widgets evar.

Awesome. I always hated cross-platform GUI libraries that don't look or behave like the native GUIs. GTK is really bad for this; it's ugly and lacks a lot of functionality that literally every other Windows program I've used has.

If you decide to use Ubuntu, then you probably don't want to use Gnome as your deskop windowing manager as Gnome is built off of GTK. Qt looks appealing if you don't mind C++.

Besides doing google searches to get help when I run into trouble when using some Linux flavor, is there some good, reliable place to search for help?

Funny...i thought the ubuntu live CD gives you a chance to demo Ubuntu first before actually installing it...and you still couldn't get to that HH? Are you sure you got the liveCD from the ubuntu website?

When I installed Ubuntu 5.10 on VMware, things went without a hitch...with the exception of running out of space because I didn't make the root partition large enough...

why don't you try to build a mini-google homepage? like, have a few modules that takes care of a task list, contact list, calendar? this is assuming you already have a database foundation for chibitaryn.net.

It might help to tell us what you have to work with. I have a few ideas that use MySQL. The biggest problem is a means of maintaining state to do something complicated. A simple rudimentary project is to build a page that does a function, like calculate the fibonnaci (sp?) sequence to a certain place or draw pascal's triangle to a certain depth?

let see if I can remember what I posted...

I believe you can use this site as an idea of what you can do with PHP. It was my software engineering project I did about two years ago.

As for doing events or highlighting dates on calendar and getting array practice in PHP, you can make a table that holds events in the MySQL database (perhaps columns could be date and event for simplicity). Then, use PHP to query the MySQL for that information. Then, as you generate the HTML code to draw the calendar, you can do a check if the current date has an event, then display event. Similarly, if the current date is today's date, then generate the highlight code.

Well, there are always defects in the manufacturing process... Cars have been around for almost 100 years and there are still recalls for faulty ignition switches and stuff like that...

pull my finger? I've gone 22+ years without really knowing what this means. So, could someone tell me what this is?

Also, is there anything you have gone without really understanding for the longest time? (So that other people can contribute to this thread )

Quarter System for University of California Schools has end of september to early december (fall), first week of january through end of march (winter), and start of april through mid-june (spring). That pretty much coincides with the seasons.

For year around schooled people, they only have month off for april, august, and december, right?
