Sorta like how sprioth is talking about how everyone knocks off Half Life or Halo nowadays, and most of the games don't turn out any good; I think the same thing was going on with RPGs back around the SNES/PS1 era.

Even more so in the NES era. There's a huge amount of crappy DQ clones hidden deep in in the most complete NES rom sets, it's just that no one really gives a damn about them, and since they were never released outside Japan, you never hear about them either. At least not until someone decides to translate one of them, which doesn't happen too often, as there are still good untranslated games left.

Because, truthfully, it's mostly about the graphics anymore. Though the Wii could, possibly, help change that..

I don't really see this as a new development, though. The grapics race has been on ever since SNES / Genesis, in my opinion.

Rargh.

Changed the title to something a tad more descriptive while I was at it.

Yeah, i really don't like people claiming the PSP is better than the DS when they only use their PSP for wathcing downloaded movies, playing downloaded music, and emulating other consoles. If you prefer the PSP's game selection to the DS', good for you, but if you're not using it as a handheld gaming system, don't compare it to one. Please. That's like saying a fridge is better than an oven. And you don't hear people going "LolZ u hav a oven, ovens sux. y dont u get an fridge insted??????", do you?

The GBA remake of FF1 really has to be the one game I've ranted most about in my life. Sure, most of it is recycled/ranslated from earlier rants I don't have access to anymore, but still. I really like the original FF1, and while the PSX remake is great, the GBA remake was really really bad. The most disappointing game I've ever played, in fact. And I've played Mortal Kombat Mythologies.

Let me quote myself here, since I'm too tired to write a new rant:

Origins has pretty faithful remakes. There were some differences, mostly fixing the extreme amount of bugs the original FF1 had, but in general, they were the same games.

Not so with DoS, however. In an attempt to appeal to the kids of today, Square tweaked the games a lot.

FF1:
*Pretty much every single battle in the game can be won by holding down the A button.
*Unless you run from a LOT of battles, you WILL be overlevelled, and greatly so.
*Death is not a factor anymore, since you'll be carrying around a dozen revivification items that never existed in the original. Originally you had to visit a church, or use a spell (which you didn't get until halfway through the game, and wouldn't be able to cast many times during a dungeon before having to recover MP at an inn.
*Speaking of the above, you can now recover MP by using certain items. Not expensive ones either.
*The original game didn't even HAVE MP, but spell levels, where each spell was assigned to a certain spell level, and each level would have a certain amount of charges depending on your experience level. So instead of your mages having to resort to their weak physical attack a lot of the time in order to preserve these spell charges for when they're needed, the new MP system allows them to throw highly damaging spells at everything. And if they run out, a simple potion puts them right back in the game.

FF2:
*Not as many changes here, but the characters gain higher stats constantly, and seemingly at random, making them overpowered all the time.

Of course, Square forgot that the kids need complex storylines and flashy FMVs in their games, none of which FF1 and 2 have, but that didn't stop them from ripping the gameplay out of these classics, leaving us with a package that really shouldn't appeal to anyone. Unless you're the kind of guy who likes holding A while watching your characters walking around dungeons as a plot less complex than Quake's unfolds somewhere in the background.

If you want to play these games like they really were, in a time when gameplay was the main focus, get Origins (or the NES/famicom originals). If you want a flashy new-style RPG, get one that was actually produced recently, not a collection of old games Square "hipped up".

We have a Pokemon hacking forum, use that. And no, I don't care if you're too stupid to enter it. Either post this crap there, or don't post it at all.

And learn to spell while you're at it.

Use the Pokemon hacking forum for crap like this, PLEASE! If you're too stupid to get in, go to Pokemoncommunity or whatever, just don't post it here. Argh.

Not spelling like a retarded monkey might be an idea as well.

Knowing myself, I'll probably come up with 5 more games I like better than these in the next 10 seconds, but whatever. The list stands.

Posted on 07-29-06 10:37 AM, in Hard Mode (Or: Struggling with Imperishable Night) Link
I found Castlevania 64 nothing but frustrating on the Hard difficulty. You have finite healing items, enemies deal a LOT of damage, and it's often impossible to avoid getting hit. I got to the Dragon boss on stage 2, but he was just too hard for me to beat. It's not like hard mode was anything other than the programmers altering a couple fof numbers anyway, since the only difference is the damage enemies deal and the amount of damage it takes to kill them.

Then there's Mega Man Zero, where I attempted to beat Hard Mode without using any cyber-elves. I got to the final stage, but didn't really bother much with it after the first few deaths. It got more tedious than hard, at that point, since the stage is just boss battle after boss battle, and I had already defeated these bosses in Hard mode already. Since my max HP was so low, I always had full energy before each boss anyway, so it was just a matter of hitting each boss about 50 times without getting hit myself 3 times. I had already done that, and doing it again with all the bosses just got boring. Since you deal so little damage in Hard Mode, these battles go on forever, and it's not really fun to kill 6 bosses and then screw up and dying on the seventh, then starting all over again when each boss takes several minutes to kill. Meh. Then again, the game doesn't reward you with anything for beating the game without cyberelves on Hard Mode, so it's not like that was the game's fault.

Posted on 08-01-06 11:34 PM, in Facial hair. Link
I got really tired of having to shave constantly in the army, so after I moved back home, I decided to just ignore it. I've had it styled up a tad at the barber a couple of times, since my beard tends to curl into stupid-looking shapes all the time, but other than that, I haven't really done anything to it. I'll probably cut it when I start start college, though, since I think it makes me look somewhat older and more serious that what I'd prefer to look like.

But I have to say, I really really hate being clean shaven. Pretty much the entire body is covered with tiny hairs, and if you shave away those at your chin, it feels really unnatural and uncomfortable, and it itches like crazy when anything, wind included, touches it.

Before I went to the army, I just trimmed my facial hair with small scissors, which left just enough hair for it to look somewhat clean shaven, but not feel uncomfortable. Also, the combination of cuts and aftershave is not a good one.

The original had characters from 27 different series, so if they're more than doubling the original cast while only adding 15 or so series, hopefully we'll be able to play as some of the villains this time around (other than Dr. Mashirito). Here's hoping for Mr. 2.

You know, the british magazine Retro Gamer has an emulation-related article each issue, and they've written about ROM hacking before. Having them publish an article about noteworthy hacks should shut those wikipedia elitists up.
