could be just one of those times your connections have issues? Not sure if it is related, but my modem randomly resets at times, and does so several times...

Is there a program I can use, that can control how much data a computer can receive? My mom actively downloads using Bittorrent. As a result, playing online games is a drag because my ping is worse than it is for 56k So, is there a way I can throttle how much information is received?

capping is not an option. I don't have a good enough reason to do so my mom says even if it is for an hour or two, nope.

i'll check out that program.

Recently, my iPod became a 5lbs. paperweight. Which got me to wondering, what would one do with a paperweight other than to keep papers from moving around. However, my room does not have enough wind to cause papers from moving around. Thus, I wonder, what other uses of a paperweight are there besides weighing papers down? Do you guys have any ideas?

funny, I was hoping this tread to be a generic discussion of paperweights, but it is becoming interesting nonetheless

danielle, we carry battle scars that most people don't have...it takes lots of strenght to be able to wake up so early every day on a consistent basis.

waking up at 5, 6am is bad enough. Having to commute two hours everyday is just adding insult to injury. and doing that for almost 4 years is real dedication

exactly...they are so useless...i don't have a need for a paperweight but yet people have them? why would anyone need to have one? it's almost as useless as a slinky...but a slinky can keep you entertained for a while...

who needs that ability? i don't have enough wind in my room to cause that to happen. Also, I usually hear of paperweights on the desks of big shots in big corporate offices. these big shots usually ahve offices that don't have windows that open

Posted on 08-25-06 10:35 PM, in Which Linux is right for me? Link
I think Ubuntu is the best of them in order to begin getting acquainted. Everything you can do in the GUI has a command-line equivalent. Thus, when you are ready to look under the hood, it isn't quite so bad. You have a variety of windowing systems to meet your needs, thus, desktop real estate is essentially limited by the amount of RAM you have with workspaces.

The most customizable text editor I know out there is emacs. However, to customize it, you need to know about LISP, which is difficult to work with at times.

NTFS write support in Linux is still spotty. However, I heard recently that perhaps NTFS write support is now robust. From windows, it is possible to access Linux partitions. But the easiest sharing of information between Windows and Linux is FAT32 without extra software. But as we all know FAT32 isn't reliable.

As for running Windows in Linux, all solutions require money (I still don't trust WINE). The cheapest is I believe is VMWare, which produces a reliable virtualization environment with the ability to write to a live HD drive (instead of a composite file as you were not too pleased about). In order to ease my transition into Linux, I'm running Ubuntu in VMWare that runs on Windows.

But anyways, the best advice will probably come from FreeDOS, but these are my two cents for a few of your issues.

If your battery feels warmer than the machine itself, then you'd have to worry. Otherwise, an overheating laptop (although bad), is not indicative that you have a faulty battery.

PHP Tutorial by tizag.com

This is the best tutorial for any language/scripting language I've ever seen. Quite comprehensive and begins in a logical order starting with stuff you most likely need first.

As for projects, if you have an idea of what you want PHP to use, then perhaps you can code a small part of the functionality.
