Skreename, if we were really willing to use kludges, we could overwrite the graphics of every single one of those kanji with variable-width text, putting two or three letters in every block, for the most important stuff, leaving the less-often-seen text in the ugly 16x16 square font.

This is kind of useless, but for everyone's edification I've translated the Japanese characters in that mystery zone. They are indeed the 'kumimoji' mentioned earlier:

(This covers the area from the last Roman numeral, X, up to the first kanji, 亜, and a bit beyond.)

Before all this Japanese stuff, you can see the ASCII half-width Roman alphabet. If you look at the number 1, it's all the way at the left edge of the tile, which would seem to imply that they were planning to implement a VWF, using only the leftmost n pixels for each character, in future foreign versions. There are all kinds of interesting characters in that area, including s-with-hacek, Icelandic eth, and French superscript 'er' and 're' (for "1st", "2nd", etc., I imagine).

One more thing to note about the font is that the characters that aren't used in the game often look rough and unrefined. Check out the circled 11, 12, 13, 14...; they look like an outline font was forced into a 16-point bitmap without any regard for elegance. I'm guessing that the producers had a stock font file and just dumped it into the game, then tweaked the characters that they were actually going to use.

(Aside: How long does MFO take to approve memberships? I've been waiting for four days!)

Guy, I just created another ID, this time connected to my gmail address, and the confirmation arrived instantly!

Tomorrow I'll try to get some more story translation posted on MFO. Has anyone already expressed desire to do the pilot profiles? Because I'd be happy to do those too.

Hey Sliver, I finally finished your first hack (final boss: level 21 with 31 PSI points is impossible, but level 24 with 120 PSI points is a cakewalk), and am now having a go at your second offering. This is quite a game!

Actually I downloaded version 1.0 by mistake the first time. I have to admit, the plainer font used in that version is much more readable than in 1.2 -- the gray border color is just too light.

Those insane critical hits that Srothroc complained about have gotten me too on occasion. I'm using save states but I can see why someone playing on a cart would be enraged.

The black/white/shades-of-one-other-color pallettes are surprisingly pleasant to look at. I really like the textures you designed for walls and floors. Not so much of a fan of the world map colors and the green swamps, which to be honest could be a bit more distinct from the grass.

Had an insane time fighting Sia but eight pills and some critical hits did the trick. Now I'm getting hammered by Bandits and the like in the snowfields. Had to run away and use savestates quite a few times to get through this -- perhaps a clinic in that rail-car building might be a good idea?

I agree about balancing the Arca a bit better. Lower the prices of some of that stuff so that we don't have to spend so much time piling up money. I'm not using any genuine cheats, but I have to admit that I've found myself resorting to speeding up the emulator and holding down the A button in order to get enough Arca.

Any reason Arca are indicated with a dollar sign and not some variation of the letter A? You've got your own currency, measuring system (kahns); why not your own currency symbol?

Ready for more battles in the snow now; this game is holding up well!

Guy, leave the text to me! One request, though: a save file with all the text in it! I have all 51 story blocks, but I don't have all the pilot profiles on my cart, and while I'm sure I'll eventually get them all, it would be drudgery to go through that battle mode over and over now.

As for posting on MFO -- I made a new ID and have no problems loggin in... from home. But for some reason, I can't even attempt to log in from my work PC, which is where I typed out those translations during some downtime. Does the "ban" of old IDs extend to entire IP addresses or something? I can't go to any page on the MFO network without being refused with the message that I'm banned!

The upshot of that is that I'll just have to e-mail the translated chapters from my work PC to my home address and then post them from home. Chapters 11, 12, and 13 are done now.

Guy, Chapters 11-13 are now posted over on MFO (www.mrfxitonline.com for the unenlightened; go there!) for everyone's perusal.

F-Zero (if I may be a pedant for a moment) shouldn't be in all capitals. "Zero" is the number zero, not the initials of something, so it should be written like a regular word. In Japanese, they write using the English letters F-ZERO, but I don't think we should use all capitals.

Just curious; what else did you change?

Made lots of progress and am now riding the rails!

Had to hack in some arca at one point because it was getting too tedious. Lower some of those prices, particularly the 500-arca inn.

In fact, I barely have enough PSI power to heal all my HP back now that my HP are over 400! Could you have the effects of Aura bumped a little as your levels rise? Getting 48 HP back is great when you only have 100; not so great when that's 10% of your HP and you can only use Aura nine times.

A minor graphic fix I'd like to see: when you exit the Divide (? where you need to break the seal and enter the snowy area), there's no visual evidence of an exit on the field. So when heading backwards, it's not clear where you should go. The other north-exiting caves have graphical evidence of the exits when you get out to the field, so this one should too.

Would also be nice to see the contents of a chest before deciding whether or not to drop something in order to get it. Not as much of a problem in the original FF where you have 16 slots for items; here, where you only have four, it's becoming a big hassle.

This game really is deep and involved. The best RPG hack I've ever played.

Edit: A bit stuck now -- the new areas I can reach are all filled with insanely powerful monsters. At one point I reached a dead end and fought a monster named Pyro (final boss?) who gave me a thorough whooping. Also found a red-interiored building where I couldn't do anything in the inner sanctum (lacking an item, I imagine). Have the EMP and two nice guns: the Vulcan (accurate) and the Rail (powerful but unreliable). Where am I "supposed" to go now?

Edit again -- I've finished the game! There was a certain switch I hadn't seen, which was the key to the next stage of the story. Finished the last battle -- and it wasn't obvious that this was the whole shebang, since I'd been demolished by Pyro earlier and I still don't know what's behind him, nor do I know what happens if you defeat the She-Bitch (somewhat redundant, that), and I couldn't even come close to defeating either of them.

I've got a great screen shot of the last moments of the last battle -- Sargon has 1 HP remaining! On a cartridge, I never would have gone for it on that last shot; I would have used an Auratap.

BTW, is there level 8 magic? I never found any and had been wondering if those robots in the catacombs might have it.

This is a fantastic game and was well worth my time. More commentary later!

Guy, three more chapters on display at MFO!

I've been using single and double quotes indiscriminately thanks to my reading material out here being roughly half British and half American, not to mention oscillating betwen placing commans and periods inside the quotes (logical) and outside (conventional).

Also, and more importantly, the story is told in the present tense, but sometimes I trnslated it in the past tense because it flowed better. It might be better to use either present or past all the way through, though. Go ahead and make any changes you like -- I don't know the official names of the planets, either.

Kenghot, nice job! (Thailand isn't a small country!)

Are there Thai-language commercial games? Did you have to make that Thai font yourself? Forgive me for not knowing; I've never seen a game in Thai before.

Welcome to the group! There are some good GBA hackers around here, but GBA hacking is a lot harder than NES or SNES hacking, I think.

Wow.

Two hundred dollars, that goes for?

Just wow. You are one devoted fan.

I'm not much of a hacker, but I could probably help with translation a bit if need be. (Working on a translation project for F-Zero Climax right now, so after that I'll have some time.) Is there any text still undeciphered?

This sounds like a fantastic, ambitious hack up there with Radical Dreamers and Super Metroid Redesign. Good luck, and I can't wait to see the finished product!

I much prefer the name 'Zero Fission' -- an allusion to the other Metroid handheld game, while at the same time describing exactly what your program does: take the game apart.

Wait a minute, why is the game available in all-hiragana, Famicon-style? FFVI was in kanji from the very beginning and has always had double-byte characters. Though I guess if you want to get younger kids into it...

Srothroc, would you be interested in doing the pilot or machine profiles in F-Zero Climax? (I've already done half of the story, but if you really want to do that, that would be fine too.) FZC is a lot of fun and really deserves to be translated.

I posted a few more story chapters at MFO for the first time in a while. Hopefully I can pick up the pace this month; fewer school and family obligations now that 2006 is over!

Srothroc, I don't have a text dump for that game; I've been using the old-fashioned method of getting all 51 story panels honestly and the just looking at the screen and typing. On MFO some people have created prefect save files, which leads me to think that there's no text dump floating around.

I'm about half done with the story panels, but haven't done any of the machine or pilot profiles. They're short and fairly easy to do.

I only have 26 of them in my game -- I went for the easier "survival" challenges so as to fill out the story. Posted two more chapters over at MFO by the way. More tomorrow!

Just got started, and this is indeed an experts-only hack.

The guardhouse would have been a lot more fun towards the end of the game, in a "Samus Aran loses her powers and has to sneak around instead of blasting through everything" kind of way, but to make this the first dungeon is tough!

And you need to proofread the text; there are typos and punctuation errors all over the place. Not a problem if it's a beta, and as for the difficulty, well, fortunately there are save states.

Now on to the positives: atmosphere is just right. And I love the level design and graphics! Being able to go to several different caverns before the real action begins is fun too. Looking forward to making more progress!

OK, you guys are way ahead of me, but help a newbie out here, if you could be so kind...

This is all covered in the readme so I won't bother with spoiler tags.

I've rescued Zelda, found the path in the wine cellar, and reached a room full of puddles and spike traps. Maneuvered around the traps and reached a pair of dark rooms ("Guardhouse Sewers") with a few rats. How do I get that door open in the first room? The second one, east of it, has a giant hole in the middle with one island of safe ground in the very center; is the switch tile on that island? There's another closed door leading north from that room, but there don't seem to be any tiles in either room that will open those doors.

Am I even in the right place? Initially I escaped the guardhouse with the wrong route and found myself pointlessly navigating a room full of holes and fireball-shooting statues only to reach a dead end.

How does one get past this?

Thanks, Golf; I'll hang around in the first room until I find it.

I found the item you referred to in the spoiler easily; it's clear from when you first enter the interrogation room that you have to free your uncle. Upon visiting that room again I see that he's escaped safely.

The Big Key that I acquired doesn't open one of the chests in the guarhouse; I imagine there's another key somewhere. First I'll get out of the sewers and make some more progress. Ludicrous difficulty aside, this really is a beautiful hack.

Just made a ton of progress thanks to all the comments on this board!

Zora's Flippers were hard to find and an seemingly-pointless fetch quest. It would have been better to have the dock with Sahasrahla on it accessible from land, followed by a comment that you'll need to get flippers to proceed into the next dungeon.

In that dungeon now and it's quite fun (though the "load state" button is getting more use). Found the hammer but can't seem to find a boss. This dungeon is much more balanced, challenge/fun-wise, than the Guardhouse, and the design is very different and clever. If the rest of the game is like this, I'm looking forward to it.

This game really has become more fun now that that Guardhouse ordeal is over. I still think the Guardhouse would make a great final dungeon rather than in introduction.

I solved the invisible bridge in Nayru's Bay through dumb luck. None of the methods I tried (placing bombs and seeing if they fell down, etc.) worked. What's the "real" solution?

I've also come to a cave near the Pyramid where there are three switches and a little magic-draining enemy nearby. I've tried many combinations of pulling these, or leaving them un-pulled, and nothing happens. Is there a clue somewhere?
