One of my friends once dated a guy who didn't want to be seen with her while she was buying sanitary products. And I have heard of guys who refuse to pick up tampons and pads. (Actually, I worked with one way back when, and the rest of us got on his case after he said that.) And more recently, some guy at work wanted to know why I had a box of pads in my office. (My response was a singsongy dumbed-down speech about how when girls grow up, things start happening to their body. My male office mate thought it was hilarious.)Originally posted by Rydain For the record, I can understand not wanting to buy tampons and pads out of worry that you'll get the wrong type. After all, there are about five bazillion choices, many of which vary in significant ways, and many women have specific preferences and won't be happy with something other than the usual product. I just figured that the OHNOES TAMPONS!!11! response was a gross-out issue and not a macho thing. |

Insider references are fine as extra fun for people who get them, but they ought to be a minor aspect of the entertainment. Unless you're watching a multipart movie or whatnot, you shouldn't be expected to be familiar with some random other work by the same author or director. Among other reasons, Hearts in Atlantis (the Stephen King book) chafed my ass because the meat of the first story made little sense to me. I hadn't read very far into the Dark Tower series, so I didn't know diddlysquat about beams around the tower and people trying to break them and blah blah so on and so forth, so when the story got to that point, instead of being interesting, it was like a giant non sequitur BUH to me. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Today, I was supposed to do the following...
|
Get on a plane in Bloomington, Illinois destined for Chicago O'Hare. Get on a plane to Washington, D.C. Get on a plane to State College, P.A. Instead, this is what happened... We arrived at the Bloomington airport to find a clusterfuck. Due to a combination of fog and massive overbooking, O'Hare was turning away flights. Our flight had been delayed four hours and we would surely miss the flight out of O'Hare if we waited for that or took the bus they were offering instead. We had been in central Illinois for a massive gathering of friends, and luckily two of said friends (Ernie and Ai) live in Chicago and were leaving the same day as us, so we frantically called them and they took us to O'Hare, where we were greeted by an even bigger clusterfuck (but at least the lines were moving). If the flight to D.C. had been leaving on time, we would have probably made the rest of our trip just fine, but it was delayed 3 hours, so we would have missed the connecting flight back home. We got rebooked for the O'Hare -> D.C. -> State College trip tomorrow, and we're staying with Ernie and Ai until then. So at least we get to hang out with them, and we got a pretty good dinner, and they have a kitty too. Hopefully things will go better tomorrow. At least the trip out here happened as planned...

That is awesome indeed. She says she used duplicate stitching to draw the characters, so she knit a plain black scarf and then added the designs afterward. Duplicate stitching is when you basically knit on top of already-knit work.
|
I've been getting OMG SHINY syndrome with all the knitting stuff at the fabric store (especially because some of my friends knit and another friend just picked up crochet and made quite a lot of blanket over the past week), but I didn't have any good ideas for a beginning project. (There are knitted items that I covet - like Cloud's ribknit sweater from Advent Children - but they're not beginning projects.) I don't want to make a blanket for myself because I know that one of the cats would poke a hole in it at some point, but a scarf would be fine because I could use it and I'd put it in the cat-proof closet when I wasn't wearing it. And I could even make one to match my 1up hat.

As far as I know, 2 delayed flights. We don't know whether the flight from D.C. to State College left as planned. For all we know, that one could have been pushed back too, but we figured we would rather not go to D.C. and then find out we would be stuck there overnight. We thought it was better to stay with friends (who will drive us to the airport tomorrow) than have to worry about getting a hotel room and whatnot.
|
Luckily, I requested off work tomorrow, but the reason for that was because we were scheduled to arrive home after 11 p.m. and I didn't think I'd want to get up and go to work after that. Tomorrow's D.C. to State College flight is scheduled for the exact same time. Argh. Oh well. I guess I'll just try to sleep well tonight.

Colin - Wow. That is impressive. Talk about making the best of the situation. We did get vouchers for a discounted hotel room in Chicago, but that was about it. We would have had to arrange reservations at a place near the hotel with provided transportation.
|
I'm actually rather lucky that we got the flights rescheduled for free. We hadn't checked in at Bloomington at all, and the employee at O'Hare said that this may have voided our tickets, but she looked us up and it turned out not to be a problem. (I also explained to her that we basically COULDN'T check in because there was a humongous line that did not move at all...and they were telling us to take a bus anyway.)

I oppose corporal punishment. I don't think that all of it is abuse per se (I understand the difference between a bare-handed pop on the butt and a beating with a belt), but I hardly feel that it is necessary. Corporal punishment may deter the child from their undesired behavior, but it does not teach them why the behavior was wrong. Instead, it teaches them that authority figures get to hit them, that authority figures are to be feared and resented. In my view, it is far better to use logical consequence punishments that leave a lasting impression without violence or hypocrisy and teach the child that you mean what you say. If your kid is acting up at a restaurant, tell them to settle down and say that you will take them home if they don't. If they continue to misbehave, stay true to your word and leave. The kid will very quickly learn that the logical consequence of misbehavior is having to go home instead of being out and enjoying yourself. As another example, say that you have already told the child not to play ball in the house. The child plays ball in the house and breaks something. You therefore take the ball away for a noticeable period of time and find some way for the child to help replace the broken object (deduct it from their allowance, have them do extra chores to "earn" the money). This teaches them that misuse of something will get it taken away and that they need to make amends for something that they damaged.
|
The catch is that you must be prepared to follow through. (Otherwise the child learns that "no" means "maybe", which is incredibly counterproductive.) Above all, the child needs to know that you are making rules to help them, and they will listen to you because they do not want to disappoint you. This is essentially how I was raised. Though I can't claim to have been perfect (who can?), I was generally well-behaved because I wanted my parents to be proud of me. Originally posted by SilvershieldI understand that physical aggression without justifiable reason (e.g. self-defense) is undesirable behavior, and thus, the child must be punished for hitting his brother. But why punish him with more hitting instead of using an alternate punishment that helps the child learn empathy? Hitting a child to teach him that hitting is wrong strikes me as counterproductive. It may show him that the act was a no-no, but it also teaches him that his caregivers are hypocritical, which can lead to decreased trust and respect in the long run. (restricted) |

The idea that shaving causes hair to grow in thicker and darker is indeed a myth. Hair is merely a fiber made out of protein. Nothing you do to the hair above the surface of your skin will affect how the follicles below the skin surface produce hair in the future. Now, puberty oftentimes does cause body hair to thicken and darken. Since many people start shaving at around this time, they commonly associate the change in their body hair with shaving, but this is merely coincidental.
|
Facial hair growth is mainly dependent on genetics and hormones. Assuming that you aren't deficient in testosterone, all you can really do is wait and hope you start producing more hair later on. Some guys take a while to reach their full hair growth potential. When Rando was a college freshman, he tried to grow a beard. It literally took him all semester to produce stubble. Three years later, when we started dating, he generally shaved every week or so. Now, at 27, he would have to shave at least once a day to stay perfectly smooth.

It wasn't a terribly exciting day, but we did have fun. We went out to lunch with some friends, ate spice cake that said friends brought over, and watched Anime Music Video Hell. I highly recommend it, even the very disturbing adults-only episode. They take amusing (and just plain wrong) moments from a bunch of videos and edit them all together, so you get all the hilarity and none of the filler.

There is some left over, but you wouldn't want it because it has some sort of white icing. Cream cheese icing, probably, but definitely not mocha. And then, of course, there's still the problem of sending food over the internets.

I also realized that I forgot to tell Setzer that Chester and Cookie are as happy and healthy as ever. Cookie has been quite a lap cat recently. Oh, and Alastor, I will take the liberty of ripping a monstrous birthday fart in order to offend you even further. SOMEBODY SET UP YOU THE GARLIC BOMB

Yeah. I'm always late to the intarweb fad bandwagon. But I ran into a brick wall trying to come up with some graphic for my site, and I think the user bars are cute, and I figured it would be fun to try my hand at one. Here's my piddly contribution to the thread. I may make more later...or squish another favorite character or two in if I feel like it. (And, in that case, possibly recaption it "Shameless Fangirl". )

You want offensive? Just watch a few minutes of the aforementioned adults-only AMV Hell. I'm just going to say that I'll never think of "Who Let the Dogs Out" the same way. Ever again. And leave it at that.

I like the daily cycle. It's basic and it works and I really haven't bothered to try anything else. Me lazy. |

My car's almost ten years old and we wouldn't have any problems affording a replacement (and insurance would at least reimburse me for the value of the old car, even though it's probably not very much at this point). So, though I would be rather bummed out at losing my first car before deciding to get a new one (it still works well, which is why we haven't replaced it yet), it wouldn't bother me that much overall. |
