Originally posted by Chaos ForceUnfortunately, no. The patch reduces slowdown by only processing block numbers within the reserved Map16 range (normally ALL blocks are processed, whether they have custom code or not, which is the root of the slowdown problem). You can have blocks with custom behavior outside this range, but their "acts like" setting must point to a block within the range. Originally posted by Stephan ReikenYes. |

I've got over 1,000 channels of Disney Microsoft AOL Time Warner cable (satellite is dead, the signal was deemed "too unsecure"), yet there's nothing to watch but reality shows about shopping or annoying talking heads. I'd watch something else, but since all "unsecure" forms of audio and video were banned from the Internet by the MAA (Media Association of America) about a decade ago, there's not much I can do. I can't buy any SHD-DVDs because the version of DRMware they use is incompatible with my current EHDTV set, and I can't afford a new one with my current minimum-wage job. All my HD-DVDs deteriorated a few years ago, apparently due to bad glue used in the manufacturing process.

I wish I could move to Japan, but ever since they were declared a "terrorist nation" by President Jeb Bush, it's been nearly impossible to get there, let alone communicate with anyone over there. The Anti-terror Comunications Interception Department (ACID) has gotten pretty good at intercepting any form of communication with the country. I hear it's a virtual utopia over there, with its own completely open and free Internet2 and public-access TV. Sigh... I'm supposed to be at work now, but my car's out of gas, and I simply can't afford to pay $8.98 for a measly gallon of the stuff. It's too bad hybrid cars and ethanol never caught on...I hear the world's oil supply will be exhausted in two years, and it's way too late to go back and change things now. Double sigh... Guess I'd better go find a job closer to home. I hope the board's still around when I get back...you can only run an illegal server for so long before the MAA finds you... (me? pessimistic? pshaw)

I predict Nintendo's next console name will be a shape or unpronounceable symbol, a la [the artist formerly known as] Prince.

The Nintendo...uh...Thing!

Okay, this is basically how Block Tool's SMW-side code works:
|
1. get block number 2. compare with table of installed custom blocks 3a. if found: get code address, run code, then go to step 4 3b. if not: increment index, go back to step 2 (repeat until end of table) 4. end code The root of the slowdown is in that loop between steps 2 and 3. That table is checked over and over again until either a match is found (the actual number of loops depends on where in the table the block number is located), or the end of the table is reached, at which point the code aborts and runs the default block behavior. This table grows in size every time a new block is added, adding another potential loop to the code. Now, add in an additional check for each on-screen sprite (double that if it's a layer 2 level), off-screen processing (Yoshi), buoyancy (if applicable), and then run the code regardless of which block type the sprite is touching...it's no wonder the poor old 65c816 can't keep up. I know I've said this before, but the problem with that idea is that it would prevent regular users from vouching for newcomers (i.e. they already know them and their behavior from another board/IRL), or perhaps pointing out important information that might have an impact on our final decision (i.e. someone was banned at another board for excess spamming).

On the other hand, nobody's used the threads for that purpose yet, and I doubt they will anytime soon. And there's always PMs. So meh. |
