Ultimanium : Usually when I ask that question, people around here answer 'rush hour'.

Ultimanium squinted, swiveling his gun up and pointing it down into the fray. A deafening blast ripped out, striking the mech's leg and ripping a huge chunk of metal. It staggered for a moment, allowing nearby fighters to riddle its torso with gunfire.

Minonim : What he means to say is-

??? : What's going on here?

While Ultimanium unloaded a slug from his cannon, Minonim pivoted over. An even taller man stared at the three disgustedly, draped in shining red armor from which countless gold trinkets and jewelry dangled. His helmet was made from the same material, but ornate curves were carved into it, all leading to an emblem of a serpent on its front.

Gahlad : Commoners were told to evacuate minutes ago! What are you idiots doing here?!

Ultimanium : Oh, hey, hey. *digs in his pocket, dragging out a badge with two fish crossing in the center*

Gahlad : Oh god, not more of you people... how about the little one?

Minonim : Well, I...

Gahlad : I mean behind the... other little one.

Minonim : ...

Ultimanium : I think the hellos will have to wait a moment.

Gahlad and Ultimanium looked up just in time to see the robot vaulting off its three remaining limbs into the air above them. Gahlad leapt forward, tackling Ultimanium out of the way as it slammed its three remaining claws down into the sides of the walkway. Rock and dust flew everywhere as the rampart visibly buckled under the stress. Its head was now visible, and its blue eyes flashed for a moment before the barrels on its noticably large gauss gun on its side began to spin.

Ultimanium : Welcome to Whitegate sir, hope you remembered a weapon.

Authorities were quickly reported about Troy, as a stolen speedboat tore away from Rogueport at 200 miles an hour. In it was endless stacks of papers, envelopes and removed staples, which poured out of the back in the wind. Troy would know what to say when he was caught. Rogueport was not the cleanliest place, and the contagious "Offline Trance" had quickly ate away at his sanity in his five minutes there.

Troy twitched the yoke back and forth trying to keep the boat from flipping, in the meanwhile tearing open another envelope with his teeth. He dumped the stapled papers inside into one hand, shaking them out to read.

Troy : ...okay, next part... Kirby and company found themselves in a land filled with a monocrhomatic layout. The trees, grass, rivers, everything was in black and white. They were definitely standing out, and were barely noticed by a trio of ninjas, calling themselves the Shinobi Sirens. Uhh, 'kay... *flips page* The Boggly Tree, home to the Puni creatures, was taken over by X-Nauts. *flips page* Gahlad and Ultimanium looked up just in time to see the robot vaulting off its three remaining limbs into the air above them. Waitasec... that's not... *flips page* The location of the party is in the residential distract of Neo Grape Gardens, southern tip of the floating island. That's not it... *flips page* Chaos reached out with one of his huge hands, shaking Drex's weakly. Argh. *flips page* Cloud slowly began to stroke Sephiroth's... oh, wrong address... *flips page* Damn it, if Kirb would send ULTY's stuff to ULTY, and C'AOS's stuff to C'AOS, and MELVIN'S stuff to MELVIN, I wouldn't be HAVING this pro- OKAY, here we go...

Troy shook a paper out of the book - a map, with a small island nearby circled in messy red marker. GLITZVILLE was written in barely legible writing.

Troy : Aight. I gotcha.

Troy stared up. The pier support inches from the starboard of the boat stretched upwards towards the docking platform 200 feet above. Troy kept grumbling to himself, turning the map in his hands back and forth and upside down again.

Troy : "The AIRship dock can be found on the west side of the isl..." Oh for frigging h... okay, okay, whatever, just get me up there. Make it snappy.

Troy grabbed the half-eaten jumbo bag of BBQ chips in the seat next to him, emptying it into the water.

The robot tried to shake the sand out of its sensors, but stopped dead cold as a dull crack echoed out from under it. The hit to the ground was the last thing the stone rampart could handle, and the already weakened ground underneath the drone crumbled apart. It plunged a solid 30 feet to the ground below, the impact snapping its back left leg like a twig and totally disabling it. Ultimanium and Kirbynite were left on one side of the overhang - Gahlad and Minonim were left abandoned on the other.

Ultimanium : Er... if you say so.

Gahlad : This is getting far too dangerous for you to stay here! Both of you, head in that direction to the guard tower, and take the stairs to the basement! From there you can take the catacombs back to the rear of the Whitegate! I'll try to take care of your little machine here, I hope you have insurance on it whatever it is!

Minonim : I'm perfectly fi-

Ultimanium stepped back as a blast of energy struck the bridge where Minonim was, ripping it to pieces and utterly destroying the droid.

Ultimanium : ...okay, we're gonna have to split, if we take the catacombs we can get back to the commercial sector. Everything there will be locked down at the moment, but we'll be able to talk without anyone shooting at us. I imagine there'll be other people there too, WINK WINK NUDGE NUDGE.

Ultimanium : Why certainly.

Ultimanium walked up behind the armored boy, tipping him over and catching him by the shoulders. Slowly he began dragging him to the tower entrance a short ways away. The boots of the armor dug visible ruts into the fortified floor.

Ultimanium : Don't just stand there, gimme a hand, I'd like to get out of here before WE get shot at, instead of the ground we're standing on.

The three lumbered along, crossfire conveniently destroying increasingly larger chunks of the walkway behind them. Eventually they crept inside, and with some repositioning, jiggery, and a lot of cursing from Ultimanium, began to scale down a set of stairs that disappeared far into the ground below. As they finally submerged, the tower collapsed with a loud pooomph.

A long winding tunnel eventually ended at a worn, rusted door. With some more swearing Ultimanium was able to pivot himself around, kicking the hatch and sending it flying off its hinges. He reemerged into sunlight, wheezing as he slowly set his end of their passenger down.

They were in the port area of the commercial sector. True to emergency warnings, the entire area was barren, abandoned shops and stalls all around. At the actual pier, a small passenger ship sat half-rigged. The Whitegate shared the same dull, sandstone construction as the bastion.

Ultimanium : Upstairs. Over there.

The door of a restaraunt-sized complex ont he upper level waved weakly in the breeze, directly adjacent to a flight of stairs.

A short fat man, with a head full of moppy brown hair and dressed in grubby mechanic's overalls, zipped in front of Snipes before he could come to a full stop. The stairway had ended in an old home, which had been haphazardly converted to office space. The floorboards were nearly ruined, pictures hung tilted on the walls, and another man could be sitting at a desk with stacks of papers that nearly touched the ceiling. A wall had been torn out and a large folding screen replaced it, hiding another workspace.

High above the city a small explosion could be seen, but not necessarily heard. Moments later Troy slammed down onto the road in a knelt position, the impact creating large crevices in the ground. Dusting himself off and ignoring the stares from bystanders, he stood up and began to walk away. His stride was interrupted as he started jumping out of the way of chunks of scrap metal and Pirahna stems that rained from the sky.

Troy : I think I pushed it a little hard.

Ultimanium : Tell everything.

Salaheem : I'm getting there, I'm getting there... anyways, you wanted to hear this, so here it is - I'll tell you the story of Aht Uhrgan.

------------
CHAPTER 1:
SACRED SERPENTS

------------

So... um... anyways... as you've probably heard a lot by now, you're currently in the town of Whitegate in Aht Uhrgan. Aht Uhrgan itself is at an undisclosed location in the Middle East... that's a silly description, saying that Aht Uhrgan is 'somewhere'... but for the most part, they don't WANT people to know it's here, for reasons explained later...

A long long time ago, Aht Uhrgan was a powerful middle-eastern nation with a burgeoning industry in textiles and coffees. Along the way, it grew a branch of alchemy guilds that are now littered all over the world. It was under a constant state of martial law in the time that it was ruled by the Empress Nasha, who eventually got assassinated and replaced with the current Empress Serpentine. Its military forces in this era were second to none, and actually outpaced Magnopolis's in terms of sheer manpower.

Eventually though, Aht Uhrgan found its Achilles' heel when a strange treasure was brought to the city of Whitegate and placed in its vaults. This would be known as the Astral Candescence.

Most people know what it looks like as it's been exposed multiple times during invasions. It's kept in the bowels of the Al Zahbi bastion, and the binding hall where it is kept has been breached before. It's some kind of energy orb held within a great pillar of cermet deep underground. What it actually does, now there's the burning question.

It's believed by scholars that the Candescence emits some kind of wave known as the 'Astral Wind', which is capable of stirring one's soul enough to literally multiply their physical and mental power in its presence. The effect is so powerful, that it is physically addicting within minutes of being around it. Wars have broken out over the possession of the Candescence, and wars still rage on. People to this day still attack the Whitegate in hopes of securing the artifact for themselves. Normally you figure anyone with a brain would leave the city and escape the fighting - but, the Candescence has the citizens of the city trapped in its influence as well. That's how fights get so rapid and so fierce - even with dozens of seperate forces bearing down on the city, no one WANTS to surrender!

While everyone wants a piece of Whitegate, there are obvious dominant factions, which also happen to be the ones situated closest to the city:

The Mamool Ja, lizardmen who have a bit of magic under their control. They are fond of physically augmenting their bodies with strange machinery, and also fond of taming the beasts of Aht Uhrgan and using them in their conquests. They have a knack for guerilla warfare, and are extremely dangerous in their natural habitat.

The Trolls, behemoths who live far under the woodlands around the city. They have mastered siege weaponry, and tinker with robots to create true war machines. The first wave of today's siege did happen to be from them.

The Undead Swarm, lamia and other spirit controllers. They make their base on a reef far north of here, and have a healthy supply of ships destroyed in naval battle to call upon. They have bound the willing (and unwilling) into new bodies to do their fighting for them.

The Seagull Cartel, rogue princes from the Empire that have now taken arms against it over land disputes. If the Swarm is the master of broken ships, the Cartel is the master of the ones still afloat. They are pirates, there is nothing more that needs to be said.

Now these are incredible odds you're fighting against... how do you survive? Well, technically, you don't - the magnificent army that once was the pride of Aht Uhrgan is now completely destroyed, which paves the way for people like me - the Empress has made a mass demand for mercenaries to set up shop in Whitegate and do her dirty work. She is paying an arm and a leg for private companies like my own to handle defenses and preemptive strikes on the factions that oppose the Empire.

The government infrastructure and economy will soon collapse under this incredible strain on its resources. But... people will ignore it to their death if it means the protection of the holy artifact. I moved in here to make a quick buck. Many other companies are doing the same.

Salaheem raised her mace, slamming it down sideways against her desk. She planted her hands firmly on it.

Salaheem : This is my company, Salaheem's Sentinels. You get your hands dirty, you bust some heads, we make the money, and in no time at all we blow this popsicle stand before the whole thing crashes down on top of us. You get it? Ulty and Biggs here happen to be the first of many employees of the Sentinels and we're always looking for more. If you folks wanna milk this place for all it's worth, or simply leave for that matter, it's not gonna come cheap.

If Salaheem was concerned, she was doing a good job hiding it.

If you... haven't managed to notice... there is a lot of stuff blowing up around here, and plenty more being arranged to be blown up...

Ultimanium : But you-

Salaheem : Yeah, anyways, what he said. We take missions appointed by the Empire, most having to do with spying and sabotauge of whichever factions are dumb enough to try to breach the gates. All mercenary companies in Whitegate report to a central commissions office in the eastern district, near the Imperial Ward, where assignments are signed up for and doled out. If you were gonna ask about the company dormitories, they got blown up last week. Sorry. We salvaged some lockers, but some of those got stolen by looters, and...

As Salaheem continued to talk, Ultimanium was already sitting at a table nearby, plugging a laptop into the wall.

Before anyone could have actually said anything about him, however, Ultimanium had already vanished. Salaheem finished digging in the bottom shelf of the cabinet, standing again with a small white sack in her hand.

Salaheem : And here are your... Janitor and Snipes have relieved us of their presence, have they... well, someone try to give Snipes his badge later.

Salaheem unfurled her other fist, dropping three maroon-silver tags onto the desk. Each had a leaping fish emblazoned on its center.

Salaheem : These'll be your Private Second Class badges, dearies. I'll be tracking your progress and upgrading your rank as you make a name for me... and yourselves, of course. If you do your jobs properly I might change you from a fish to something a little more menacing, like, a butterfly. As well... think of this as a signing bonus...

Salaheem dumped the bag on the desk, creating a heaping pile of bronze coins. They were all worn beyond belief, though the serpent carving in the centers remained intact. The dates on most of them were pre-1900.

Salaheem : People in these parts are finicky about bartering, and legal tender from other countries is rarely accepted, or even convertable for that matter. Divide this up amongst yourselves, you'll most likely be needing it. Aaaaanyways... I believe that's all I have to say for the moment. I do happen to have a small task that needs doing right now, whether you'd like to tackle that immediately or have some time to get used to Aht Uhrgan life is your decision...

??? : You're late.

Ultimanium : I had to relocate. The line in my last building was being tapped.

??? : Then the Empire is already getting suspicious.

Ultimanium : Well, they did just lift travel bans a week ago. And as far as I know, the no-fly zone hasn't been removed. In either case, the mercenary groups would be a good place for them to look for shady characters.

??? : Anyways, shall we begin?

Ultimanium : Is everyone gathered?

??? : Waiting on you.

Elsewhere, a tower stuck high out of a busy city. People were all seated at a table in a large conference room on the 55th floor. At the head was a dark-skinned man with neatly combed yellow hair. Slowly he stood.

Magnus : All rise. Head of Magnopolis research and development, Balkan Kovosochek. Head of defense, Aiegland. We are gathered here today to discuss the growing concern over the recently re-opened Empire of Aht Uhrgan. As many of you may know, the empire of Aht Uhrgan closed its borders to neighboring countries just over 100 years ago over global criticism over its civil wars with the country of Alhazeen. However... an official statement from the current Empress, a member of the family of Serpentine, has lured able-bodied soldiers and mercenaries to the land with the promise of jobs. Many people have followed in their wake to accomodate these people. While we welcome their reentry into the global community, this has also given us the chance to see what affairs that Aht Uhrgan has enveloped itself in.

An enormous man, bald and with a big bushy brown mustache, nearly tore his dull-green suit apart with his muscles as he stood.

Aiegland : Aht Uhrgan continues to do battle with rampant barbarian factions. Intelligence indicates that the entire nation is in a bloodbath, all people fighting to gain control over a power called the Astral Candescence. Our current secret agent in Aht Uhrgan, Ultimanium, has revealed its powers to us, and that is another discussion entirely. But, we have established more knowledge of the artifact over time, and we have found disturbing facts about its actual ownership... while it does have a psycholgically possessing effect, we are continuing to grow doubts about its true use...

Another person in a white coat stood, rubbing his frizzled red hair.

Balkan : ...we have obtained the design of the Al Zahbi bastion, where the main gates of the Whitegate city are. The AC, if I may call it that, is stored within the catacombs of a building known as the Hall of Binding, as seen on this map. As you may presume, this is nowhere near the commercial sector of the city, or even the center of the city itself. Yet still the hired grunts and what remains of the military continues to throw themselves at whatever threats gun for that area of the town.

A blue hologram of Ultimanium sprung up from the center of the table.

Ultimanium : It's almost like... they WANT the beastmen to get the AC. And it wouldn't be just for the sole purpose of getting rid of it, because the addicting effect would cause them to charge right back after it in retaliation.

Balkan : Exactly. Which means it has some secondary properties that we're not aware of.

Magnus : Ultimanium will continue investigating the society of Aht Uhrgan under the guise of a mercenary of the guild Salaheem's Sentinels. The AC is having a devastating effect on the well-being of Aht Uhrgan, and we cannot intervene directly without violating agreements set out by the Empire regarding free travel in and out of the country. We must find what is causing the AC's mental effects... or, I may be a little paranoid here... whether or not it is a weapon that could affect neighboring countries, or even our own.

Ultimanium : I'll see what I can come up with. I'll be talking to you all later, I'm already losing my signal.

Magnus : Take care.

Disconnecting...

Salaheem drummed her fingers on the desk, frowning as she glanced over to what remained of the battered lockers in the corner. She walked over to it, swinging out a massive ring of keys and quickly jimmied one of the top ones open. Inside, a photo was taped facing inwards as to not be seen. Salaheem reached deeper inside, dragging out an object that looked like a cross between a bazooka and a microwave oven. She lugged it back over to the table and dropped it with a crash.

Salaheem : This was left here by an earlier employee... It's a encrypted matter transmitter. It's a pretty ancient model, so I can't guarantee that it'll reach wherever you're intending... ugh, what the hell is all that noi...

Snipes yelled as a bipedal mech marched straight across the window. It's giant, golem-like body was held up by limbs that almost looked like one hand and one leg, with its gauss gun stuck outside of its head. Ultimanium : Guys, did you get your briefing fr... WHOA mama.

Ultimanium stepped back into the plaza in time to get swept over by a wave of inky black smoke, which thinned out slightly around him as he pressed forward.

Ultimanium : That's... the robot that attacked us earlier... but I'm pretty sure we wrecked it's limbs, why is it still moving around?

The Bravura slowly craned up, standing straight on its two 'feet'. It swayed slightly, attempting to shake its sensors back into alignment. The limbs holding it up were very visibly soldered near the top, but still rocked back and forth as if they were hinged.

Ultimanium : Who could've repaired it in that short a time?

The mech's eyes went dim for a moment. Slowly they turned a dull red.

AI routine check indicates a pattern of attack.
Ultraviolet sensors disabled twice by injection of dust.
Lubrication systems operating 150% in ultraviolet sensor region.
Switching to infrared targeting...

It crouched down again, spinning with surprising speed back to Snipes. Several small compartments opened on its shoulders with loud clicks, and fired off a cluster of bottle rockets in his direction.
