There's not many objects outside the castle, and you can't add objects you know!!

You should be able to. The video showed a lot of yoshies and goombas and the number of trees was the same, I don't think there's a reason you can't add or delete objects...

Why you don't just check this thread frequently no matter if the editor doesn't come out in 3 weeks? that way when you see the editor you'll say OMG is the editor!! XD

VL already told us many times that you will not be able to add objects in the first release!!

That would make the editor completely useless, I would prefer to wait even a whole month more rather that not being able to add and delete objects and enemies. ì_í
Levels would be exactly the same only with moving a few enemies around, if we could add enemies then it would be another thing. More enemies=more fun!

Do you guys think that you will be able to add Brower to any place

No, I think he might load the wrong textures or appear glitched or simply crash

change the text he says?

There's an editor that changes the text: http://board.acmlm.org/thread.php?id=4310

Or make new pathways in the castle leading to new levels?

If you mean put a picture in a random place that leads for example to the castle garden then yes, if you mean to make for example a corridor then no.

and what if I want to make a bridge of red ! blocks? that's impossible without the add button...
But yeah, It's just a beta, I'll wait until this feature is in the editor (but please, make it soon, I can't do anything withouth an adding and deleting things! T-T)

EDiT: Mario129, welcome but you are in the wrong thread http://board.acmlm.org/thread.php?id=5193&page=3

i hear you guy talked about this Mario 64 Level Editor

start understanding process...
...

...
critical error at 006B110A. Sentence does not make sense
understanding failed

Now that I know I won't add stuff in the first release, I guess the first thing I'll do is to change the front door (and the warp if it has one) to a random place. I'll put a Chomp next to Toad and change the lava level into an ice level (It was possible to edit the level propertipes in the beta, didnt it?)

I don't know about the rest of you, but I was a little disapointed by the logo choice by vl-tone.

I would prefer "Teresa obake 64" as the editor name, I just don't like the name toadstool... but whatever, the editor is not mine.

If everything is handed to u on a plate then its not really hacking is it?

Actually yes, hacking is modify the game like you want. Id doesn't matter if you change some RAM adresses, if you make a graphics change, if you change the level or even put a piece of paper with a mario drawing on the screen, it's still hacking. (well, the last thing maybe not XD)

It doesn't matter if you edit the levels with an hex editor or with an easy to use editor, you're still doing the same. If someone hacks SMW levels with an hex editor (assuming he's doing the same things we can do with LM) then he is just a completely idiot that wastes his time showing the others "hahaha look you noobs my super duper skills" instead of using that skills to do something really usefull like finding other games data or doing new things in SMW. (Sorry if someone fells offended, I'm not refering to anyone, it's just an example of person)

(EDIT: I just hope this doesn't bring the ROMcrapping to SM64...)

Oh and claiming vl-tone as god is incorrect.. Miyamoto is god vl-tone is maybe one of his deciples

no, VL would be a semi-god XD

VL, don't allow any pressure to change your decisions in this. At the moment, a lot of people want the editor released because.. Well because frankly they're just overly excited. I've lived through the community (other communities actually) long enough to know it when I see it, and a lot of these people probably won't even do anything with the editor. (Just tinker with it and put it down once they get a scope for the limitations of the game.)

There will always be the dedicated and interested people who are eagerly awaiting the release of the editor, and whom plan to actually do something.. But, they're not the majority. And in fact, I dare say that these people are probably the only patient ones! So yes, you don't have to rush anything out.. Take it slow, go at your own pace, and do make sure you're satisfied with it before you ship it out the door. (And by the by, I think it was wise of you not to give out dates anymore, those are evil, evil things aren't they?)

As for this Open Source business.. Uh, I honestly never understood where people got the urge to undertake huge involving projects like that when one is on the way (or is already done.. look at Lunar Magic for example) - there is just.. no reason to really do so. It is a lot of work to invest when someone else (in this case, VL) is dedicated in creating a polished product.. And besides, he seems very reasonable, so I'm sure if anyone requested a viable feature or submited him an idea or some obscure findings, he would take it to heart and add it or otherwise consider it at least. (Right VL-Tone?)

Really, it is just crazy talk to go into such a mess (and expect poor VL to provide all the info he has up to this point, and "explain" the meaning of it all) so soon. An Open-Source Editor project is a good idea mind you, but I disagree with using this game in such a project right now.. There are plenty of other options.. Doesn't Zelda OoT for example have similiar formats? I know Mario Kart 64 did too (Yes I know HH is already on this, but he said he wanted it Open Source anyway, so there ya go), and probably others.. Maybe just go with something less complex? Would seem a better idea to me. At the moment, it kind of seems a kick in the teeth (to be blunt) to be talking about reinventing VL's wheel before he even has the first beta out...
I completely agree.

And about doing a new forum... the editor isn't even out, If we make a forum it would be either the chaos or inactivity, and it would get deleted like happened to the old version of SMW hacking...

I asked a similar question not to much time ago, to find stuff by yourself (assuming that there's no info about that game), you have to divide the rom in parts and corrupt each part.
Example:

Let's say this is the rom:
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX
corrupt a half (or 1/4 or whatever)
00 00 00 00 | XX XX XX XX let's say the game crashes, here might be what you are looking for or maybe not.
Now you corrupt the half of that part
00 00 | XX XX | XX XX XX XX The game doesn't crash, but what you are looking for doesn't so here is nothing.
the same with the other part:
XX XX | 00 | XX | XX XX XX XX the enemies are messed up, so here is the enemy data, but since you don't want to mess with other stuff you have to repeat this until you mess only the enemies.

I hope that helped.
There should be an sticky or something about this or something... I only see stuff for newbies and advanced hackers, but nothing for medium-level XD

when a secret exit is passed it activates the event after the normal exit. for example you mae that when the yoshi level is completed it activates event 71, which makes the right level appear. Then you have to make the left level appear with the event 72.

yes what? o_0 don't make 1 word posts, please.
If you mean how to make the map look different, then use the map editor and lunar magic faq
If you mean how to get the maps from others hacks, first ask to the author if you can get the map first, then you can copy and paste it, but the events have to be copied manually (I think, I never tried this...)
If you did mean how to change the graphics and stuff, change the graphics with a tile editor.

I've watching this since it started too, but I wasn't registered yet (I was watching this board since february 2005 I think...) [/random offtopic]

You can't make lava act like water, but I guess you can make it look like water (see the snowman level, there's water that acts like lava)
Or maybe if lava is an object too then you can change it to water... i don't know, just wait to the editor and see it

What?

Just replace the Water Texture with lava Texture and overwrite the Lava with water.

I didn't meant to say that >-< of course you can, I meant that each level has a group of textures or something, and if you change the "Lava theme" with a "water theme" the lava wouldn't act like water, but might look like it.

You can't add stuff, you can only change existing objects and sprites

ummm... sprites are objects... =P (not really, they are part of 2D objects, but whathever)

Is the whole terrain a giant object? if so, we could replace it with another one like for example a floaring Island, or we could move it. (for example to make the castle garden underwater or something...)

We all want to mess randomly with SSB, but not enough to do it (Cheats/RAMhacking does not count XD)
And I'm with Sonic too.
hacking isn't a magic thing done for fun, it nedds a lot of effort and sacrifice.

If someone sits down and spends a while doing it I'm sure they'll figure it out.

That's the problem. no one really wants to hack this game

Short answer: NO
Long answer: it is POSSIBLE. but that would require to overwrite completely the code of the flame to create a new object. Not to mention that we don't know anything about even where is located its data and posibly there won't be space for this. So you can't.
