Posted on 01-14-07 03:38 PM, in Fast ROM patch broke my hack Link
Like the title says. I applied the "Fast ROM" patch to my hack, but every time I hit ANY block from below, the game freezes and goes weird (it turns the BG completely black, moves the foreground a bit, sometimes putting Mario over a solid object, which has no effect, since it's frozen, and the music keeps playing). I also applied Ghettoyouth's SMB3 Music patch to my hack before, since I didn't want to base my hack on SDW3. These are the other patches I can remember putting on this hack:

-MikeyK's Pipes patch, for his custom SMB3 pipes.
-FuSoYa's SPVertical, so other sprites can react to custom blocks in vertical levels.
-Piranha Fix, so I can make the classic Piranha Plant look right. (Which, incidentally, I found out a few days ago that my Piranha Plants and Venus Fire Traps are using the wrong GFX. XD My bad.)
-BMF's Reserved2 patch, which he fixed for me using SPVertical so they wouldn't conflict.

I believe the Fast ROM patch is conflicting with one of these patches. It's probably the SPVertical/Reserved2 patch, but I honestly believe that it's actually the SMB3 music patch, for obvious reasons (It has more music in it than the original SMW). However, at the same time, I have a TON of custom blocks in my hack. It could be that the Fast ROM patch is conflicting with block codes, thus making the game glitch when one is hit from below. However, I noticed that it only does that for SOLID blocks. The ledge blocks don't do that, as you simply jump through them from below. I'd listte blocks I'm using, but it's a really long list, and it's getting longer and longer. (Seriously, as my ideas expand, so does the amount of custom blocks I need.)

Help? I've actually given up on salvaging this hack, so I'm just going to move all my levels and stuff to another ROM. However, if I CAN save my hack, I'd really like to know. After all, you think it's easy setting up a lot of stuff in a hex editor? O_o (I have some code I changed between things, so... )

I kinda forgot to make a backup before I applied Fast ROM. XD I'll keep that last tip in mind when I put all my levels (and ExGFX and GFX) into a different ROM and start over.

Something tells me now that since it was the BLOCKS that glitched, it might've actually been BMF's "perfect" breakable blocks (And just so you know, KPhoenix, the blocks work like they should. Remember, there was no spin jumping in SMB3!)... Oh well. It doesn't matter anymore. I put all my stuff into another ROM and reapplied the patches I remember putting in it (except Fast ROM), and now it's working again. Whew...

You're not alone.

That level is hands-down one of the most annoying levels in the game, on account of the fact that if you get hit EVEN ONCE, that's it. You're done for. You lose a life. Unless you can grab a cape in enough to time to hit a nearby block, release the P Ballon, and grab it. But seeing as Mario falls fast.... That's very unlikely. I usually avoid that level, but I manage to clear it easy somehow....

I did that when I transfered all my stuff in my hack to a new ROM (That is, applied Fast ROM first), but the moment I applied Ghettoyouth's SMB3 music patch, I got a new result- THE GAME WOULDN'T LOAD PAST THE "-Nintendo Presents-" SCREEN! Good thing I made a backup!

Sorta. I won't tell you much, but....

Spoiler (Energy Tank):You know that run you just took? To get the Ice Beam? Yeah, that one. Remember the super-annoying maze? At the top of it is your Energy Tank. Either get it now, or do what I did- Wait until you have the Varia. Me, I didn't know it was there, so I kinda missed it until I got Gravity. It's hard to get without Spring Ball (packaged with High-Jump), though.

Please don't let me have typed "spoiler" wrong.... You can get through the game without that Energy Tank, though. I think you shuld wait until you're more equipped to get it.

I was wondering... Is the Final Fantasy series any good? Judging by the number of games it has, I'm assuming that a ton of people like it. I want to try it out, but I'd like some honest opinions first, especially if any of the games are bad. Oh yeah, and just so you know, I only own Nintendo systems (Save for that PS2 I got just so I could play ONE SINGLE GAME. Not a very good idea, was it, considering I don't play it anymore? ), so... Please don't suggest I get a game that's only on a different system, like the PS2. Thank you.

NO, ME! No seriously, do me. Just... No Pikachu looks. I'm thinking of changing my username to Ninja Yoshi, so... If you draw me, draw me as a Yoshi that looks kinda like a ninja. Oh yeah, and white. I'm a white Yoshi. And I have a hat like the one Kirby gets when he has the Ninja ability (What can I say? Kirby Squeak Squad brought it back, and I *heart* it so much! XD). All I ask is to be drawn as a Yoshi who looks like a ninja. =)

Yes, do another of Danielle!

Final Fantasy took a nosedive after it went Sony anyways.

If you can find it, get Final Fantasy II (US title -- Final Fantasy IV in Japan) for SNES -- the GBA remake was a tad on the buggy side. The GBA remake of FF5 is also a good bet, as will FF6 when the US release comes out.

I wouldn't bother with 1 and 2 unless you played them on the NES. And, while I enjoyed what I've played of 3, I never finished the original and have no DS with which to play the remake, so I can't really say.

But, yeah. 4-6 are pretty much the peak of the series, and they are quite good.

4-6 are on what system? Or are those Japanese titles? I kinda live in the US, so... The numbers confuse me, because I, too, have heard that Final Fantasy 1 was actually a different Final Fantasy game in Japan (I forget which. I think it was 2 in Japan?). It just messes up the whole numbering system, don't you think? But yeah, I heard that the most recent Final Fantasy games are terrible. O_o I wonder why? Oh well. No sense thinking about that. I'll definitely check out your recommendations. But... Wouldn't it be best for me to start with the first ones? Or do the storylines have nothing in common with each other whatsoever, thus allowing you to play any of the games in any order without having to worry about not knowing what's going on?

Edit: Nevermind. My question has been answered.

You got a PS2, and FF1, 2 and 4-6 were ported to the PSX, so you do have access to the majority of the series (not to mention that these ports keep their original number, so there's no confusion to be had - if it's for a Sony console, the number on the box is correct).
That said, the one you should pick up is Final Fantasy Origins, the collection of the first 2 FF games. Both are among the best in the series, and unlike the GBA remakes and most likely the upcoming PSP remakes, the gameplay was NOT ruined in the process of updating the game. Beautiful stuff, and mighty recommended.

As for your first question, no, it's not as good a series as you'd think. It may have many fans willing to tell you how awesome it is, but many of these have never play any RPGs not titled Final Fantasy. The series also took a serious nosedive when it went 3D with FF7, culminating in the crapfest that was FF8, but never managing to get back to the quality of the early games, so try focusing on the earlier games first.

But again, there are better series out there you'd rather want to play, like Earthbound, Phantasy Star and the brilliant Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior series. FF is nothing compared to these.

Uhmm.... Okay. I'm planning on trying out Earthbound one of these days, by the way. I wanted to ever since Super Smash Bros. Melee. So... I'll try and look for that one you mentioned I should check out.

I'm confused. Old Aquaria? I know of Neo Aquaria, but...

I like this hack. While I'm still only at Banzai Bill Journey and Mysterious Pyramid, it's fun. What I DON'T like is that you can only enter the Extra levels once. What if the player wished to enter them to explore, but grab its items later? They couldn't do that because you close off the levels once you clear them.

You know, I, too, prefer those shiny bricks to the turn blocks. Turn blocks are annoying. Play Star World 1 with a Cape and keep swinging it around and you'll see what I mean. They're SO "buggy", if you keep doing that, the game with eventually automatically throw you into a turn block you haven't turned yet, thus killing you. But, if there's one thing that bugs me, it's that people prefer the Custom Block breakable brick to BMF's perfect Breakable Bricks patch. People seem to think that the ability to destroy them with a Spin Jump is a bad side-effect of it replacing the Turn Blocks, but I don't see what's so hard to understand about the fact that SMB3 didn't HAVE the Spin Jump, thus BMF's patch is perfectly.... perfect, so to speak. It makes sense when you think about it.

Anyways, I absolutely hate the overworld there. It looks like some n00b was able to draw and place layer 2 tiles pretty well, but just placed the levels wherever they felt like. I mean, would anyone REALLY put a level right there in front of that cliff? Nintendo didn't. Oh well. It's too bad Nintendo threw out the Mushroom House, though- I like that look.

Well.... Sometimes, if I'm really careful, I can get through the level pretty easily, and without getting hit (A requirement to beat it, though). Technically.... That happens pretty often. O_o But I still avoid it like the plague.

I'm at the last level of this hack. I can't wait to see the finished product. My only complaint is that Water Mario is too fast- I keep getting hit. And with a Master Suit in effect.... That's a problem. All in all, it's really fun, but.... How can there be a secret exit to World 1-1? It's obvious you'd need a certain Power-Up for that, but at that point, the only powerups you can get are Super Mushroom and Fire Flower. Any hints as to its location?

Good. I found that one. I was wondering why you didn't mention it in the spoiler.... XD

Well, I beat the hack. Already? But it was getting good! I like how you did those Sun/Moon Doors. Are you going to keep the Overworld Pipes, or are you going to turn them into something else? Are you planning on adding a new ability to Chuck Mario? I miss the Hammers.

Edit: By the way, you might want to change the Secret Exit to World 2-1. That You was SO obvious when I got it, and I didn't even get the NORMAL exit! Plus, good players will be able to reach it easily, especially considering how good the Powerup you get at the start is...

Are there any "requirements" to joining and stuff? Just want to know before I post my inventory.
