not 5 year old, but maybe in around 12-13 year old, when they will have more life experience, when child will start to learn various thing about life, its normal for a 5 year old child to think that way, since they don't realise the result of anything they do, seeing the result of his action will allow him to devlop his moral
ex:he insult a youger child causing him to cry
it is the same thing for religion, if you kid is really christian, you won't going to need to force him to read the bible, he will read it himself
but, if you keep forcing him to adopt your moral until 18 year, he may never devlop his own moral, because he will believe his own is worthless when compared to your

I did better than you guy, I manage to go up to this area with Mario(easier with the power baloon) and by using wall jump, I got back to the water suface and Mario started swimming, I then get back to the tunnel and... in the middile I stopped swimming and I falled on the ground it seem that water behavior is handled differently in the DS version
