With the new generation of consoles on the horizon, and one already realized, graphics have pretty much reached their peak; there will never again be such an amazing and noticable jump as from SNES to N64, future generations will mostly just clean up jaggies, use less fog, more polygons and so forth. But I do believe there is one major hurdle that has yet to be cleared.

Textures. Graphics right now basically just consist of polygonal models with textures applied to them; this technique is used on everything from water to the sky to characters and the clothes they wear. The problem with this is that polygons are stiff, and clothes and water and such are not, creating a noticably "fake" feeling. While pondering to myself, I came up with a hypothetical solution to these problems.

I call it the Molecules System. Rather than using polygons to create shapes which are then textured, there'd actually be billions of tiny spherical models that are interconnected to create free-flowing more complex shapes. Imagine if a character's clothes were created in such a way; just apply gravity and her shirt falls on her realistically, and flows in the wind and as she moves. Imagine if water were made using this system; the molecules are mostly transparent with a tinge of blue and they stick to each other whenever nearby unless pulled apart. Realistic water would actually be doable.

Granted, since I have no idea what sort of technical specs would be required to run this kind of system, Molecules may still be a ways off, but I like the concept and think it could very well be used in the near future. Tell me what you think.

I've actually played HL2, and that's not what I'm talking about. I'm not talking about realistic (read: modern/futuristic) graphics, I'm talking about realistic physics based upon the gradual phasing out of polygons, in favor of Molecules. Clothes that move and flow, water that actually acts like water, structures that can be permanently altered from the smallest scratch to utter destruction; it'd be just as likely and easily employed in a fantasy setting as modern.

What I'd like to see is for perhaps the first Zelda game of the Revolution to have Link and Link only wearing clothes that used Molecules instead of polygons. We move from a single main character to perhaps all the water (assuming there's not a lot of it) in a game being made in the same way. We move on to a game whose setting doesn't often change using buildings and other structures made of Molecules. As the industry grows more comfortable with the technology and the systems become more and more powerful, it's use spreads to where entire landscapes are made using Molecules, creating an effect similar to that of Scorched Earth, albeit on a more graphically sophisticated game, until eventually, polygons are phased out entirely.

Also, I far overestimated when I said billions. Shortly after posting this topic, I did a rough estimate of the number of "molecules" it'd take to make JC Denton of Deus Ex's blue trench coat. The calculation was based on the texture I extracted from the game, using pixel count, and from the in-game model, using polygon count, and rounded out at a cool 27,648. I think that's realistic for even Xbox 360. And I say "even" because it's the first to be released. I expect the later-released PS3 to be more powerful, as far as processing power goes.

I like to take existing ideas and reinvent them in my head, and have grown a fierce distaste for most things accepted as the norm because of this. Now's not the place, but sometime, ask me about the Outernet or the Manus or Tags.

For me, Christmas is depressing. Depressing like a carnival or a rainbow, depressing in a bad way. People who truly hate each other act like they don't, people wear a fake smile and abuse terms like "peace," content that they've somehow added something positive to the world by acting phoney and happy for a week and recieving gifts. I hate Christmas; everything surrounding it is false.

Our favorite little green man with the Triforce of Courage emblazoned on the back of his hand has had many different visual styles over the years, despite the relative stability of the gameplay formula that we've grown so fond of. My question to you is, which is your favorite incarnation of Link? I'm talking about visually, which one do you like to see the best, this isn't about the whole multiple/single Links theory thing. Also, this is referring not to the graphics in-game, but the Link used in visual media (instruction manuals, promotional posters, etc). In case you need a refresher, here's a brief list of his visual incarnations...

Link the Boy-Hero
This is the Rinku of the NES and original GB game, and of the shortly-lived American cartoon. As a character, Link wasn't yet strongly defined, and was thus portrayed as a typical "boy-hero" in the style of Astroboy; a young, presumably Japanese kid in a green tunic and tights, with dark brown hair and a cap. Visually, this was a simplistic Link who was most notable for his Hylian shield bearing the now-iconic triforce.

Teen Link
A more cleaned-up version of the previous, this incarnation was noticably older and more detailed, given longer arms and legs, lighter hair and more western facial features, such as blue eyes and a larger nose. His sword was also portrayed as being longer.

Link 64
With all the buzz surrounding Ocarina of Time, the visual look of Link was given a makeover times two. Young Link looks very different than the previous two incarnations, he is very much more noticably elven and western, with "baby fat" adding to the youthful look. Adult Link is very medieval knight-esque and more modern at the same time; his hair is in a modern style and now completely blonde, his sword's sheath is strapped across his back instead of at his waist and he has very noticable muscles. This is also the Link featured in the two Super Smash Brothers games.

Link-tan
Proported to be Miyamoto's original envisionment of Link, this iteration differentiates the greatest from the others, forgoing realism and maturity in favor of a stylistic, perhaps anime-inspired look. Pastel colors and a chibi-style of large head with small body and near-nonexistant nose are used. Large eyes with a bold black-and-white colorscheme replace the ambiguous, "is he western or Japanese?" style of previous iterations.

Bishonen Link
The newest model of Link is the most realistic of all, and perhaps the darkest. He is decidedly "pretty" with an attractive, almost feminine face, while still being tough. He wears earrings and has long sideburns of blonde hair, complementing his blue eyes. His outfit has been given a major overhaul while still sticking to that green color scheme we all know so well. It is apparent that he is wearing realistic clothing expected of a medieval warrior; full-body beige long johns keep him warm and act as pants, replacing the white tights we're used to. This cloth also provides protection from chafing from what is clearly chain maile that he wears which extends past his waist into what was previously the girly zone. His tunic is now thicker, darker and has realistic patches and cut-ins to allow for movement. His belt (which has a pouch on the rear) and the strap for his sheath are thicker, darker and more leathery in texture and appearance, with prominent copper buckles and realistic fasteners. He also has gauntlets and boots that come up just to the knee that are made of the same leather material. As seen from the backside, his shield has realistic screws, reinforcing bars, handles and straps. Though this seems to be the natural evolution of Adult Link from the 64 era, upon closer examination, it is almost as vast a departure as Link-tan. We have yet to see how this visual iteration of Link is represented in a game.

But Link is a Japanese character, and there is no English equivilent to bishonen. Bishonen is widely-used enough in English at this point to be considered a legitimate loanword such as bonsai, hentai, manga or otaku.

If Kutske were a videogame character, he would be a male persona and would unfortunately be rather clichéd. Although he has personal philosophies that are quite complex and interesting, he rarely shares any of them because he isn't particularly fond of most people. He would be the type to shun war only because the soldiers are fighting for someone else's ideals, the type to shun weapons be they swords or guns because they are tools used by the weak to compensate for lack of real ability, the type who is morally ambiguous because although he has goals and hopes, above all else, he lives for the fight and wants to find the toughest opponent he possibly can. He doesn't care when or how he dies, just as long as he's sent to hell by the hands of a truly strong person. He's not angry, not cold, not silent or overtly wild, he seems not to really give a care, but there are certain people that really rub him the wrong way, that really piss him off. Those people are weaklings in positions of power, primarily, and anyone who touts their weapon as if it means that they as a person are formidable or respectable. He is honorable, though he doesn't seem it and never talks about it -- he wouldn't attack someone in their sleep or mount a surprise attack, because his goal is not to kill his opponent, but to get into the longest, toughest, most bone-crunching and bloodiest fight possible. I guess he's a bit masochistic in that regard. Perhaps he'd have a confidante at some point, most likely someone greatly younger or greatly older than himself, like a little brother/sister figure, or a sagacious elder figure. In his words, "(I) Don't have a name, don't have a place, I'm just looking for the toughest motherfucker you've got. Interested?"

Like the character of Kutske, I believe that the you cannot know a man, est for in battle. They say you cannot get closer to someone than you can during sex, or through childbirth, or by playing music together. Far beyond that, you can understand the whole and the base of someone only when you fight them with your fist of fists and your heart of hearts.

How is that a "HUGE Image?" It's 41kb. Unless you're running something from 1982 or have a four-inch monitor, there is no possible way that could be considered more than medium-small sized.

Alastor, Clockworkz, you've both obviously missed the point; I'm dissatisfied with the "holiday season" because it's fake. I hold doors open, help people pick things up they drop, point out to someone when they drop their wallet, help the help-needing cross crosswalks and such all year 'round. It just really ticks me off that people feel so righteous because they act that way for a week, two weeks tops out of the entire year, and then they go get drunk and feel up their cousin like I did that one New Years when I was nineteen. But we're getting off the subject here; point in case, it's totally false. People by and large aren't nice, yet they get credit for it because they fake it once a year. That's just not good enough for me. I don't like the holiday because it promotes this phoney bull, and I don't like to see people celebrating in their phoney way, or boasting about their phoney "good will towards men." The whole scheme is rotten, and revolves around another point that pisses me off, in that people love to pat themselves on the back and are satisfied that they're good people, while they're gassing up their "four miles to the gallon" SUV, lying to their kids, cheating on their spouse and publicly decrying actions that they themselves enjoy and participate in. It's all phoney, and if there's two things I hate, one of them is phoneys.

Besides that, Christmas has become bastardized, and I don't mean in the way you think. I'm not Christian and I don't even like Christmas (I greet people with "Io, Saturnalia!") but even I can see that in the 1940's, saying "Merry Christmas" to Joe the Barber as you passed him on your way home from work had a certain something about it, it was a community thing, and now these special interest groups have ruined it all with their oohs and their aahs.

Which, in the grander scheme of things, revolves around to my point that nobody is offended by anything. If someone makes a crude gay or Jew joke on television and my gayjew friend is watching it, he laughs if it was funny. It's these "groups" with monickers that involve words like "action" and "family" that bitch and moan and ruin it for the rest of us, like that suckup prick in primary who reminded the teacher to assign homework, or that self-obsessed jackass at the office whose only joy in life is keeping up with the Joneses. These "groups" have ruined much of everything, but the focal point of their insessant nagging is around Christmas, which turns me off to the holiday even more.

Not that I'm particularly fond of government-endorsed or traditional holidays as it is, but that's another show.

How bad is our culture becoming that we can totally omit grammar in favor of abbreviations in order to express more complex thoughts? Or is that...advancement? Anyway, I must reluctantly say that my favorite is Bishy Link, but I don't vote in my own polls, hence zero votes. I'm normally against the whole ultrarealism thing in gaming, especially gaming produced by the Big N, but there's something about that character model that I really like. I think it's the maile. I'm gonna say it's the maile.

Bender gives the best advice of all. "Have you ever tried simply turning off the TV, sitting down with your children...and hitting them?" Another quote, from some comedian I saw on Comedy Central awhile ago, "I don't understand why parents beat their children, when emotional scarring lasts so much longer."

In all seriousness, I echo Silvershield's sentiment about loving parents being able to use corporal punishment effectively. We humans are built with a sense of pain in order to teach us what not to do (i.e. stick our hand in fire or step on a sharp object). Parents can take this inborn knowledge we all have and use it to discipline their children. I believe that in our early years, we're more nature than nurture (some kids are simply destructive and enjoy it, some are more quiet and calm -- regardeless of who is raising them and how) so measures need to be taken to exert some degree of control. And in case you're wondering, I believe at some point in our lives, the whole "nature/nurture" thing no longer applies, and we become beings of choice.

As for me, I had my ass beat up and down the lane. For me, that wasn't helpful simply because I've never liked my parents, but I can imagine a scenario where it'd have been acceptable and useful.

I'm feeling lazy today, so I didn't read the topic before posting. This is the first time I've done so; sue me. I've wanted to write out a pros/cons now that I have my DS, so here we go.

Before I got my hands on one, I imagined the DS to feel like an SNES controller with a screen in the middle and a flip-top lid. I was very wrong, and a bit dissapointed. The face buttons are too small and too close together - while my thumb fits comfortably on an SNES or PS1/2 controller, I struggle with the DS. I also dislike the "cliky" aspect of the buttons and D-Pad, they instill in me a feeling that I'll break them if I press to rapidly or too often. The shoulder buttons are fine, considering this is a handheld, they're actually quite comfortable. With Nintendo stressing the creative abilities of the DS, I also would have liked to see a customizable internal menu (moreso than just picking a background color) where you can change the shape, style and location of the buttons, maybe even draw a background picture or - using WiFi - download them. I imagined the GUI to be almost like a primitive desktop. There's nothing wrong with the menu, I just expected more. I must also echo the sentiment that I worry about the structural integrity of the game cards, specifically that the connectors are exposed. Granted, I'm careful, but as it stands, I'm more gentle with the game cards than I am with CDs.

Prose
Not a single dead pixel, first off. I was worried there might be one or two, but I think that was just scaremongering by PSP fanboys. In my hands, and to look at, the DS just looks and feels really, really cool - the geeky giddy factor (or GGF, as I like to call it) far outweighs even the Video iPod. I didn't expect the 3D graphics to look nearly as nice as they do in the few games I've played so far, and even more, I didn't expect the graphics in general to look so clean. Like, PS1/2 and GBA seem a bit rough, a bit jaggy in the graphical department. There's not a trace of that in my DS, it looks really crisp. I also didn't expect the sound quality to be as terrific as it is - using earbuds helps, of course, but that's true of almost any sound-emitting device. The tune that plays while you're searching the local area for games to play is mesmerizing with earbuds in (the sound travels not just from left bud to right bud, but it feels like the sound is circling your head -- my GBA couldn't pull that off). The sound, also, seems really clean and crisp to me, very modern. The volume range is also nice, it can become much quieter or much louder than the GBA, although the volume control is very delicate and takes some getting used to. The AC adapter and the unit as a whole also feel very solid, very sturdy and durable, the material the system is made out of feels very high-quality, there's something tactile about it, too -- you just want to touch it...which, I guess, given their "Touching is Good" campaign, seems like it should've been more obvious to me than it was.

Overall, I'm extremely pleased with the DS (especially since I imported a Graphite Black system, which is unique among the Platinums and Blues so common here in the States) and can't wait to play more games. My fingers are crossed for Golden Sun 3...

Grey cat: Me? I like New Link and OOT Link. In case you haven't noticed, Link's NEVER had a defined personality, ever. He's a shell of the user's perceptions of the world, much like Chrono or Ness. Silent hero, you see? In OOT and Windwaker they tried to give him a personality, but a lot of his reactions were really just surprise or confidence. Does Mario have a personality? Not really; he likes ravioli. And Peach. But he's changed throughout the years, too.

I'd welcome this New Link if they actually give him a personality and a reason to exist other than "save princess, hero of hyrule, yadda", but other than that, I'm all OoT Link for the win. Adult. Real men wear tights.

Videogames are becoming too pretentious and complicated, I'm glad Nintendo's mascots don't have overt personalities or storylines. Although, Mario and Link both - to me - have personalities in their motivations, their in-game vocalizations (Hut! Tut! Hyeah!) and their appearance. Mario seems to save the day because it thrills him, he enjoys a challange and probably takes child-like glee in jumping around like a simian. Compare him to Goku of Dragonball fame. Link, on the other hand, seems unsure of himself and troubled at the epic size of his undertakings, a darker and deeper character, especially recently. While Mario seems gung-ho and, "That's seven challanges down. Next!" Link seems more, "I've finally cleared that dungeon and beaten the boss. *exhausted sigh* Now what am I going to do? Where am I going to go? God, how in the hell am I going to rescue Zelda? What if Ganon hurts her before I make it there?" Compare Link to Shinji of Evangelion.

But maybe that's just my overactive imagination spilling out into templates that beg to be filled.


SantaDavis: I underlined the inaccuracies here for emphasis. Link's Awakening, being the fourth game in the Zelda series, did not use the same Link style as the first two games; it used the same style as the third game, A Link to the Past. In fact, much of the art in the Link's Awakening Manual is the EXACT SAME art as in the LttP manual.

They seem different to me, as I'm looking at them here.


SantaDavis: Secondly, the original Link's shield did NOT have the Triforce on it. It had a big freaking cross. At the time of the first Zelda game the Triforce didn't even HAVE three pieces yet, just wisdom and power. Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link did see the first appearance of the Triforce in its now familiar "three triangles making up a triangle" shape, but not on Link's shield. In fact, the only time it's seen in the manual in that form is on the back of Link's hand.

The cross is only seen in-game. It's the Triforce on the packaging.


SantaDavis: Compare for yourself...

The first one seems more realistic and the art style is decidedly Western. The second one is clearly anime-inspired. These two pictures look very different to me -- remembering that we're talking about artistic styles just as much as what he's wearing.


SantaDavis: Nothing to add except that the art of this version always seemed more anime-influenced to me than the others were.

Given this comment and the previous one about the two pics, you and I obviously have a very different idea of what constitutes "anime style."


SantaDavis: Oh, and that, as you failed to mention, the style was also used for Four Swords, Four Swords Adventures, and The Minish Cap.

SantaDavis: My only other gripe here is your last sentence, as we HAVE seen PLENTY of gameplay footage and screenshots.

To me, watching gameplay footage and actually playing the game is not equal. You can't get a feel for a character by watching someone else play.
