Oh, ok, I thought we were specifically talking about "up time" (given the screenshot in the first post).

It derives from a school of thought that when your computer is on, the wiring is hot, and when it is off, it is cold. However, eventually, the soldered wires supposedly become brittle from the temperature change and eventually crack. Another school of thought says that although that is true, leaving the computer on all the time can wear out your hard drive quicker and cause the cooling fan to die a premature death. You just can't win, so ideally, you should turn it off once a day.

I think the effects are probably relatively minor either way. I think most people replace equipment (individual hardware or the whole system), because they feel it's out of date, before it wears out. As far as the hard drives go, although I've seen computers where the hard drive bearings have went bad, normally they die from physical damage to the platters, due the power being pulled while writing, causing the write head hit the platters as it slows down.

This kind of reminds of a computer class I took in high school when I was the only one in the class that didn't get a passing grade on a web page assignment because I hand coded the html instead of using FrontPage (I "didn't follow instructions").

I got a good laugh out of his web pages, though. Why does he have pictures of random locations on every page without so much as a link, or some explaination of why its there, or what it has to do with anything? And why does he have the date overlapping the w3c logo, so you can barely read either of them? And why is there a little black and white photo of him smirking at the top of every page?

That's the "back" button. Good luck finding that out without using one of my pages (hint: link in sig).

(hover over mine for a little more information, too)

Oh, ok, I didn't know that meant back. From now on when I design web pages, I'm going use a picture of an old man smirking for a back button.

It's supposed to be a strip of film (Because of the MST3K theme). I fixed it so that's a bit more obvious. I also rmoved the border around them. It wasn't suuposed to be there, that was a bug in the layout maker, which I also fixed.

Thanks for the feedback.

Nebetsu: You're right about the menus being annoying, having them automatically pop open when you mouseover and close when you mouseout seemed like a good idea in my head, but in practice it's just kind of frustrating. If I have time tommorrow I'll change them so there's something you click to open and close them.

Dr_Death16: I was thinking of something similar to that, where the code could be manually edit while using it. The only problem is as soon as you make a change with one of the menu options you would lose any manual changes you made. There's probably a way around this, though, it would just take some work. Or maybe, I could just put a link on the output panel to a seperate app for editing the code

Anyway, I just fixed a little bug in it where the "Originally Posted By" text is bigger in the preview than it is in your actual layout.

I'm thinking of adding a save feature, since it should be pretty easy to implement.

Well this is kind of dumb. I remembered that I was having problems with transparencies on IE back when I was making my last layout. So I checked to make sure it was displaying right with layouts made with this and it wasn't. I tried everything I could think of to make them show up. Then, I viewed source on one. Turns out, for some reason the board is converting the word filter (followed by a colon) into x:, which messes it up.

Why is the word filter, followed by a colon, or a space then a colon, converted into x:?

Opacity works fine on IE with filter:alpha(opacity=n). And it will show up in the preview on the layout maker, but not in your actual layout.

Edit: Ok, I found out that by taking out the space between the colon after the word filter and the word alpha, it keeps it from being blocked. So new layouts using transparencies will work, and if you already created one, just find where it says filter and remove the space after the colon.

Well how about just blocking that entire phrase. Blocking filter: breaks trasparencies.

Oh, I see its putting a space after the colon that causes it to be blocked.

You know, one of these days were all going to have to accept no one's ever going to convince anyone else that their favorite browser, running on their favorite operating system, running on their hardware is the best way to experience the web.

Once we've done that we can move on to more important debates, like which brand of cola is the best. Which, by the way, is RC, and anyone who disagrees is not only backwards and ignorant, but most likely cruel to animals and small children.

I think its just general flaws in our education system. School hours have increased, credit requirements have increased, and work loads have increased. But is anyone getting any smarter? Grades are supposed to be an indicator of how well someone is learning. But somewhere along the line the grades became more important then the actual learning. The focus of school has moved away from learning and into simply getting credits and mantaining a good GPA. They give the students piles of homework, which they just copy the answers off the one or two of them that knows them. Then they cram information for tests, and it promply leaks back out the next day. And this is not only condoned by the system, it's actually encouraged, because all that matters anymore is the grade.

Think about it, were the people who finished at the top of your class the smartest? Go up to the average high school graduate and ask them basic questions, like "What's a quadratic equation?", "What was the SS?", and "What's a joule?". And most won't be able to answer. They did home work on these things, they took tests on them, but they never learned about them.

The majority of grades are now based on huge amounts of homework. Those who complete it all by copying off each other will excel, while those who don't complete it, even if the are just as smart or smarter as those who do will be held back and not given the opportunity to learn more.

The real problems seemed to be in English and the social sciences, where the English and History classes I took were quite literally years behind our standards.

At any rate, I wouldn't get too upset, guys. 19th place still means you're beating like 180 countries?

Actually only the first one was directly related to math. The second was history and the third was physics.

I tend to believe violent crimes don't happen because they're in video games, music and movies, they're in video games, music and movies because they happen. People tend to be violent, right back to our chimp ancesters (or if you prefer, when Cain killed Able), and if anything video games more likely act as an outlet for aggression rather than a source.

I think its going a bit far, though, to say that young children won't ever try to emulate what they see in a game or a movie, but this isn't really a reason for censorship, just better parenting.
