YA RLY

There are so many annoying ads that I find it easiest to describe the type that don't annoy me. Text ads clearly separated from the content and relevant to the content (namely, Google's AdWords) don't get in my way, and they are more likely to interest me than some random subject that has nothing to do with what I'm reading. Google's sponsored links are similarly OK. Sometimes when I search for something, I'm looking for a place to buy it, so the sponsored links can be very helpful in that regard. I also don't mind inobtrusive banners. In a nutshell, show me something relevant that doesn't get in the way of the content, and I'll leave it be.

The rest gets BALEETED with AdBlock. If I have to say which ads I hate the most, I'd go with the ones that make sound. What knuckle-dragging bottom-feeding nimrod came up with the brilliant idea of interrupting people's music or quiet with some inane loud noise? "Well, we could try to come up with an interesting ad that people will want to click on, but that involves work! Let's just annoy them until they click the ad to shut it up!" Haven't they ever heard of people forming negative associations with brands?

My relationship with my ogre was my FIRST EVAR111!! and it took me a while to be comfortable with the idea of doing anything beyond cuddling and kissing. It was six months until I felt ready for anything sexual.

I think education is needed. Many people don't understand that losing bodyfat and keeping it off requires them to permanently change the way they eat. They go on a diet, lose some bodyfat, return to their old eating habits that got them fat to begin with, and think that the diet didn't work because the fat came back on. They are tempted by quick fixes (like the "lose 10 pounds in a weekend" juice fasts that take off a bunch of temporary water weight and little else) because lifestyle changes can involve a heck of a lot of effort, especially if the person is battling emotional associations with food (such as eating for comfort or out of boredom) and negative reactions from friends and family who are bothered that the person no longer wants to go out to eat at restaurants that serve unhealthy food, stuff their face at family gatherings (in some circles, it's considered an insult to the chef if you don't eat until you're about to explode), or have a morning donut like everyone else at the office. Sometimes people have to learn how to get past those problems as well. Sure, you can Just Say No(tm) and suggest social gatherings that don't revolve around food that doesn't fit your diet, but it can help to have encouragement and ideas on how to get this through to people. You or I might not give a crap about what somebody is or isn't eating, but a lot of folks are pretty ridiculous about it. Diet sabotage is surprisingly common. Here's one article about it, and you can find many more on Google.

Posted on 09-16-06 01:32 AM, in CONFIRMED: Wii dated for Nov. 19th in North America at $249 w/Wii Sports Link
So I reserved the Gamecube version of Twilight Princess ages ago before I knew anything about the Wii. Probably before it got its final name, actually. And the friendly local game store just left a message on my machine informing me that I can change my preorder to the Wii version. My ogre and I were interested in the console anyway - we like our Gamecube and Nintendo's exclusive franchises, so the Wii will certainly be enjoyable as well - so we're going to go for it. We don't really have the time or inclination to camp out, but I'm sure it won't be too long before we get our console.

And.......Wii! Gonads and strife...gonads and strife...gonads and strife...

Lately I've been doing Round and Round three days a week with a goal of completing Workout A with no breaks. Thus far, I can complete the 5, 6, and 7-rep rounds and most of the 8-rep round, and I do a total of ten chin-ups in each workout. After Round and Round, I do a hard 20-30 minutes on some cardio machine or another. I especially like the elliptical, but lately it's been the stairway to hell (basically a short down escalator) because the college kids are back in town, and sometimes I can't get a spot on an elliptical, even late at night.

I'm working up to commuting by bike five days a week. Thus far, I do at least two (except for this week because I've been sick ). It's not terribly difficult - it's just that that much biking is a much higher volume of aerobic activity that I'm accustomed to. Each way takes me about 30 minutes over mixed terrain, though the return trip is more downhill than the way to work. And contrary to certain people's opinions, biking sure as hell does count as a workout if you're pedaling quickly and/or pedaling uphill.

On days when I don't bike or do calisthenics, I get on a cardio machine at the gym. When this stupid cold goes away, I'm going to deadlift on one of my non-calisthenics days as well. Picking up heavy shit and putting it down is win.

I always thought it would be amusing to throw old, dead electronic equipment off a tall building and videotape the impact. It's fun to watch things asplode.

The Wizard...because I saw it in theaters when I was its target audience. I was eleven years old. I had a monster crush on Fred Savage. I was absurdly excited about seeing SMB3 gameplay. My dad referred to that movie as "Rain Man for kids", which seems to be a pretty accurate assessment. I'm sure I would think it was cheesy and dumb now, but at the time, I thought it was great.

One of my college friends - another of the few women in computer science - and I wanted to build a snow peener outside the computer science and engineering building after the next snowstorm. Sadly we never got around to doing so. I don't think it ever snowed enough for that after we got the idea.

Posted on 10-03-06 11:32 PM, in Okami Link
I read about Okami last week and had to go find it right away, and it completely sucked me in. I love the incredibly interactive environment and the satisfying pace of gameplay. I can sit down for a couple of hours and make great progress, and there's always plenty more to do. The combat is the perfect difficulty for me. New enemies require some effort and thought, but they're not horrendous pains in the ass, and it feels great when I learn their patterns well and can wipe the floor with them. I like how most of the enemies are in scrolls that you can avoid if you want. Some reviewers may think Okami is too easy, but that's fine by me. I'm a casual gamer. I like making good progress each time I play, and I like reasonable challenge that is enjoyable to overcome. (Incidentally, Disgaea 2 has been meshing very well with my casual gamer-dom thus far, but that's another topic.) I'm not sure if I'll bother beating all of the optional minigames and fights - some of these are reportedly incredibly difficult - but at least they're there for completionists and people who want a real challenge.

My only aggravation thus far was having trouble with one of the digging minigames because I couldn't get the water spout to work reliably, but then I read that it's best to just draw a short stroke up (I'd been drawing long lines), and I beat it soon thereafter. I also wish you could speed up the text because I read much faster than it draws.

Feh. It depends on how well-socialized they are. We raised Chester and Cookie from the age of eight weeks, and we got them used to kind human attention from the get go. They're now four, and they're very friendly, playful, and attentive. Our cats welcome our companionship. They greet us when we come home and complain when we leave (Cookie follows us to the door and whines), and they like to cuddle or sit near us. Chester is up on my desk headbutting me as I type this. Cookie always finds a way to wedge herself onto Randy's lap when he tries to use his laptop. They're well-behaved, too - they're scratching post trained, and Chester will sit patiently in my arms while Randy clips all of his front claws in one go. I should also mention that Chester plays fetch with his toys.

Yeah, there is the occasional hairball, but I really don't mind. The joy of kitty companionship far outweighs the minor inconvenience of picking up a barf log and pouring some Nature's Miracle if said log was on a carpet.

Chester wakes us up on a regular basis. He flops on the pillow while I'm still using it, headbutts our heads, and tries to open drawers (and sometimes succeeds - that cat must be part raccoon because he can get into pretty much anything). Both of them will sleep very quietly with us (they usually burrow under the covers), but when Chester wants attention, we both know it.

So I had to give this a shot because it looked like way too much fun for me to ignore...and I'm hooked. I'm not very far (beginning of chapter 5, 20ish hours of gameplay because I've been messing around), but I'm learning how to abuse the system. All I've been doing lately is going through the item worlds of my better accessories. Hooray for vastly improving said accessories while getting a boatload of schwag, money, and experience.

I graduated college and haven't found a job yet. I've been curious about ROM hacks for a while. I wonder if I can figure out the level data in The Addams Family (SNES). I know it's going to involve a crapton of tedious work, but hopefully I can get some pointers here.

I'm also thinking about getting into cosplay, but I'm not really happy with how my butt looks in a leotard. I go to the gym sporadically, but that's not good enough. From now on, I lift three times a week and pay more attention to what I eat.

I'm dual booting Windows 2000 and Mandrake 8. I got Randy to install Linux for me because it looked all nifty and shiny on his computer, and I wanted to try it out. Enlightenment is my favorite window manager. Its minimal style works for me, and I love how I can have pretty translucent terminal windows. Yay shiny.

Yeah.

I've been really quiet on the boards because I'm addicted. ADDICTED. 70 hours and counting. I unlocked CoO and abused the first level a bunch, and maybe now I can finally get past that stupid story level with the catwalks and archers and mages that were too far away for me to snipe. I'd been owning the story levels up to that point, but I sucked at that one because my mages were weak.
