Spaceballs is WIN. "She's gone from suck to blow!" "I see your schwartz is as big as mine!" I knew a kid in middle school who watched it so many times that he broke the tape. If we don't have that on DVD already (sometimes we pick up random things we like when we see them and forget we have them), I need it.

My hair is at least 36" long measured from hairline over to ends. (I haven't measured it in a couple of months, so I'm not sure of its current exact length.) If I just washed it, I wear it down. If it's a non-wash day, I put it in a ponytail and spray it with a bunch of water, which helps moisturize it and brings out the waves. Lately, I've been braiding it when I go to the gym because it's beginning to be long enough to get unwieldy. I can make a bun with a pair of wooden hair sticks, but that's a pain because my hair is quite thick, so when I twist it, it doesn't tend to lie down neatly against my head. I really need to get back to practicing stick fu. I always wanted butt-length hair, which is about 45" on me, so I'm growing my hair until that point, and then I'll keep it at that length or cut it back if it really gets irritating.

If I didn't like the way my hair looked long, or if it were difficult to take care of, I would have some rather androgynous (or even manly) short style - even a bald head or all-over buzz that I could maintain myself. I actually consider my current 'do to be androgynous (because it's the sort of style that longhaired men tend to have - all one length, parted down the middle). I can be girly sometimes, but I generally like androgynous or masculine style. I have no idea why. I just do.

My favorite hairstyle on my husband is a buzzed fade. Very short on the back and sides, 1/2" to 1" on top. He has a round head and fine, straight hair, so it's the most flattering style for him. On people in general, I just like to see styles that look good on them.

I have a 2 GB iPod Nano whose main purpose is to provide exercise music, so I only put on songs that I would want to work out to. It's a bit more than halfway full.

I normally wear mine in a ponytail, which keeps it off my neck, so it doesn't get hot. On a more general note, many people are surprised that my hair is so low-maintenance. I wash it in the shower every four days, which doesn't take more than 20 minutes. (Of course, I shower more often than that, and if I'm not washing my hair, I just put it in a redoubled ponytail to get it out of the way.) I can go that long between washes because I've trained my scalp to produce less oil by using gentle shampoo. When you strip too much natural oil from your skin, it tends to overcompensate by making more. I don't use very much shampoo (maybe a quarter-sized dollop on my scalp), but I go through conditioner by the boatload.

My hair is quite damage-resistant, so I just trim split ends every once in a while, and that works. If I want to even out the hemline, I can do it myself.

The most annoying thing it does is get stuck in my pants waistband when I sit down, but some more length will solve that problem.

I fricking love this show. I haven't seen it in years, and I don't remember it well enough to have any favorites. Otakon used to host a Mystery Anime Theater 3000 - with robot puppets and all - but its creators retired, so MAT3K is no more. I understand that they would rather end the concept on a high note than hand it over to someone who might not do as well with it, but it's still a bummer. At least I got to see it in 2002 and 2003, and it really was an excellent fanwork. They picked truly awful movies, and their robot commentary was in character and just as funny as the official scripts. I'm sure it must be recorded somewhere.

Great...I could gank a few rolls of a certain type of corded trim that is the one thing that I can only find at Wally World. JoAnn Fabrics used to sell it, but they don't seem to have it any more, and the one online source I've found has a rather high minimum purchase requirement. There aren't any other general fabric stores around here. Central PA is Bumblefuck when it comes to fabric. At least we have a kickass quilt shop, but that doesn't help me find weird trim.

This particular trim is cord with a densely woven plain cotton cover. It's awesome for putting a raised rounded edge on costume armor. It's bias trim, which means it goes around corners without wrinkling, and the texture is subtle enough that you can paint it with metallic paint and it still looks good. (And if you really want the texture to go away, a few coats of gesso and a buttload of sanding will do it. I like the texture, so I didn't bother.) Here's a shoulder pauldron of the costume I'm bringing to Otakon this year.

Don't mind me...I'm a costume-making dork, and I can't resist pimping my work.

Is anyone else here going to Otakon? If so, what are you mainly interested in?

I went to my first Otakon in 2001 because my ogre is a major anime fan, and we were near Baltimore, and it seemed like a good idea. Getting to the con was utter hell due to the baseball traffic, and we only got to hang around there for a few hours, but it was a wonderland I wanted to revisit. We caught a Lupin III movie and bought a bunch of rare video game soundtracks in the dealers' room, and the whole idea of cosplay just grabbed me. As a dorky middle school kid, I was a fan of Anna of Phantasy Star II and Rydia of FFIV, but their costumes seemed way too elaborate for Halloween. As a still dorky grownup with disposable income and fond memories of doing well at sewing stuff in eighth grade home ec class, I was thrilled to see that costuming was such a thriving aspect of fandom.

I don't want to speak much of my first costumes, but I will say that they taught me quite a lot. I've finally hit a point where I'm genuinely proud of my work. Most recently, I've been redoing the armor and weapons of my Zhang He costume out of closed cell foam. I just love patterning this stuff and putting it together.

Mostly finished shoulder pauldron (since the photo was taken, I tweaked the paint job somewhat, but you get the idea)

Unpainted peacock talon (gauntlet weapon thingy)

I still want to dress up as Anna, but that will wait for another year. I will NOT be recreating her mullet, though.

Oh...I forgot to suggest a movie for MSTing.

Silent Hill.

It's way too easy to snark on - we were coming up with quite a few good lines on the fly in the theater (whispered, of course) - but still.

Anaconda would also be great. It's still one of the worst movies I've ever seen, and that does include Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.

Kasdarack - Thanks! That's my first compound curved pattern ever, and I'm really happy with how it turned out.

Both of those items are made from foam. I paint it with a few coats of artist-grade acrylics, so it remains flexible. I just painted a strip of foam gold to see how the subtle texture of the foam would look with the paint (it's sort of glittery, which is OK by me) and make a base for testing various colors with the gold, and I bent it in half without any trouble. The raised strips on the gauntlet and the swirly on the pauldron are thin craft foam, which I had to coat with gesso so the paint wouldn't rub off, and the gesso does harden the surface of those decorations to some extent. It's good gesso, though, so they can still bend.

I am impressed that you work with metal and boiled leather. I tried making real banded metal leg armor for the Xiahou Dun costume I've been working on for my husband, but it was a royal pain in the ass, and the overall effect wasn't quite as good as I'd hoped. I've since learned that metallic stretch vinyl cemented over foam (and other materials) can look awesome, and it is of course much lighter...so after all that time and money, I'm redoing his armor. Bleh. That costume will be ready sometime next year, I swear. At least I have most of a 10 ounce dyed black buffalo hide sitting in my basement in case I ever need it.

Do you have any pictures of your work? I'd love to see it. The Castlevania series is teh win...and real hammered metal armor looks awesome.

There's always other people within earshot at the movies unless we go to the drive-in. The drive-in is awesome. Too bad the last movie I saw there was Batman Begins, and it was great, so there wasn't any reason to snark back and forth without whispering.

I think the best movie theater experience I had was going to see American Pie with a friend who, like me, loves good raunchy humor. The theater was packed with people our age, and the opening sequence had all of us going "GAH!" in unison and laughing so hard we had trouble breathing. There's a beautiful synergy of an entire audience having an absolute blast at a goofy comedy movie.

I answered 2-4, but sometimes I'll drink more than that if I'm in the mood for them. I drink diet pop because it has no calories and I like the taste. Seriously...the last time I took a sip of regular pop, it seemed syrupy and gross. And before I got used to diet, I used to hate it.

Even that is terrible for me, but, well... I need the god damn caffiene. I am definately considering switching to diet, to try and cut down on the sugars... But doesn't diet have more salt or something? I don't fucking know.

I just need the caffiene. NEED it. I am a fucking junkie; I cannot function like a normal human being without it.
Diet pop is basically inert. It is caffeinated and carbonated, but obviously neither sound like a problem for you. And as long as you don't have PKU (a rare genetic disorder that you would have known about since you were little) or some random sensitivity to an artificial sweetener (like noticing that a certain sweetener triggers migraines), the sweeteners in diet pop shouldn't give you any trouble, either. As far as sodium goes, the can of Diet Black Cherry Vanilla Coke I have in front of me says that it contains 45mg of sodium, which is 2% of the RDA. I have no idea how that compares to regular pop.

I just remembered another one.

Adventures in Babysitting.

Suburban teenager gets stuck babysitting two suburban kids. Her friend calls her in a panic from a seedy bus station in downtown Chicago, begging to be rescued. She goes, but she has to bring the kids with her. All manner of plausible and implausible hilarity ensues.

I saw it when it was still new, and I totally wanted a Thor helmet like the little girl, who was about my age. I rented it some years later and it was still funny as hell. It's campy and absurd and it just somehow works.

Just recently, I read that this movie is being remade. Way to be out of ideas yet again, Hollywood. Somehow I bet nobody will give a crap about the remake 20 years later.

Are you sure you aren't being nostalgic? I never had FF1 until the SNES era, and when I got my hands on it I hated it.
I'm with you there. I liked the game enough to play it through to the end (though I was swearing at its shortcomings a great deal of the time ), and I appreciate that it was innovative for its time, but I think that as a classic, it's overrated. The battle engine makes molasses look like Speed Racer and suffers from the standard old problem of characters being unable to move on to the next enemy when set to attack one that just died. The magic system is clumsy and needlessly limiting. I disliked that there were more spells available for each level than your characters could hold and there was no way to replace spells you'd learn, so if you picked up a crappy spell, you were stuck with it forever. I'd never heard of D&D charges when I played the game, so the concept of points for magic levels came off as a nonsensical way to add challenge. I thought it was like going to the store and being told that you had to buy a $5 item with a $5 bill only. You couldn't use five $1's or break a $10. It seemed like you didn't get that many points - even for low-level spells - which made me rely on my fighters and the standard trick of stocking up on 99 of each healing and status restoring item before going anywhere.

I have yet to play the GBA revamp, which, from what I understand, removes the aspects of the game engine I found annoying and adds fun challenging optional dungeons to explore. FF1 does have its upsides - such as the ability to choose the classes of all your warriors, the ability to evolve them mid-game - and it would be great to enjoy all of that with a snappy and modernized game engine. At the time I played FF1, though, I was thinking that Dragon Warrior III had its strong points and executed them much better. Your characters were still teh st00pid about attacking a blank spot, but you could make characters of a variety of different classes (and even switch classes repeatedly to create, say, a magic-using soldier), the battle engine was fast and efficient, and magic was actually useful. Lest anyone accuses me of making an unfair comparison, I'd like to point out that FF1 was released in Japan in December 1987 and DW III came out three months later, so although DW III was further along in its series, they are both of the same generation.

For the past three years, I've been a web developer. I handle all aspects of web-based application programming - interface design and coding, database design, planning and coding server-side scripts and libraries, etc. I liked my job at first, but due to various factors (long story short - like pretty much everyone else there, I was overworked and significantly underpaid), I started looking elsewhere. It took me a while to find another job in my field because the market around here sucks and I don't want to move. (My ogre has a great job, and we own a house and are generally happy with the area.) I've accepted a position at another company, where I'll be doing the same sort of work but making literally 40% more money, and I'll get a nice vacation allowance after a while, too. I'M THE MAN NOW DOG.

One of my friends used to work at a crappy grocery store called BiLo. Bored workers + no supervision + unlimited access to food = BiLo Challenges. The rewards were usually pretty meager (like maybe $5 for the winner), so these were mainly done for amusement. Some examples...

Eating an entire stick of butter-flavored Crisco. The guy who did this said that it looked the same when it came out the other end.

Being the first to drink a bottle of hot sauce or eat a jar of mayo.

Eating an entire club pack of hot dogs (around 36, as I recall). This ended with bright pink barf.

Once they found some soup cans that had expired back in the '80s, but the soup was a gray congealed lump that nobody was dumb enough to eat.
