I use Textpad too, but I didn't manage to find a .syn file for PHP that worked. Which did you use? Without them it has some annoying problems with the ' and " characters.

My DS has fallen out of pockets, off shelves, and down stairs a ridiculous number of times and the only thing that's been damaged is the paint. The classic Game Boys, you could damn near use as a hammer while playing. NES had a defective cart loader yes, but it could take a beating. SNES and N64 were fucking TANKS, and Gamecube is still the most durable disc-based system I know. The only problems I've had with Nintendo products are their tendency to wear out after about 5 years (just over the expected lifespan, mind you); analog sticks and cartridge slots become loose. Both easily fixed by replacing the controllers and wedging things in behind the cartridges.

PS2? Just about every PS2 I've seen has died. My mom's friend (who lived with us, and still does but I no longer do) had four of them just plain wear out from normal use, each after about a year. He never abused them, even by accident, they all just pooped out.

PSP? I saw a PSP demo unit at Zellers and decided to try it out and see if I could make it do something silly. Sony beat me to it - it wouldn't turn on, even though it was plugged in. I haven't seen enough PSPs to know how durable they actually are. I've seen maybe three people who have them in total.

Xbox and Xbox 360 have both been ridden with defects for quite some time. Error 0102 anyone?

Well just imagine if it were free? It was described a while back as "the YouTube of video games". Scrolling through 42 pages of "HALO PENIS MOD" to find a game doesn't sound fun.

Wow. So suppose Apple did the same thing and started making some awesome games, you'd be OK with having to buy a Mac to play them? MS is already doing precisely this with DX10 and Vista.
What you're basically saying is "I want future products to require me to buy the latest Microsoft software and install their latest unnecessary bloatware". If you already love Microsoft and do this out of habit, then simply replace "Microsoft" in that sentence with any other company name.
Have fun buying a new TV, VCR and stereo with each new game console.

I remember that during much of the second incarnation, it was possible to post in non existent threads. There used to be a zero thread that could be accessed with thread.php?id=00 until Acmlm added an zero thread to the database and closed it. Later a bunch of people started posting in other non existent threads. I had the first post in thread 10000 weeks before it was started, but before then the post was moved to another thread. When Jesper found out people were posting in such threads, he changed thread.php to not show them. At that time, nothing was done to newreply.php, so people could still read and post in the non existent threads for a while longer.

I remember having fun with that, and I use 00 too.

Which could be interpreted as "more companies should provide a way for users to create content" OR "more companies should encourage the use of tools that will require the end-user to buy/install/upgrade/etc a bunch of new junk" (IE .NET, Vista, etc).

But, I'm sorry. I have this damned thing called intelligence. Because I don't buy into your droolingly retarded hyperbole.

These sentences seem to conflict. I mean, intelligent people aren't really known for trolling.

-> "Have fun buying a new TV, VCR and stereo with each new game console"

Have fun being mocked...I mean...VCR? WTF.

OK then DVD recorder or whatever you want to substitute in there. I would hope you can see the point here. If indeed other companies start implementing this sort of thing, who's to say we won't have to "upgrade" all our A/V equipment to versions that have some "special new feature" required by their product? Just as we have to "upgrade" Windows to play DX10 games, and install .NET to play XNA games?

Nintendo doesn't have the money for huge server farms like other companies do, and with WiiConnect24 pretty much everyone is going to be downloading the update at exactly the same time.

Ok, right here's where your argument fell apart. That's... pretty much how the console game market works, and I KNOW you know that.

Excluding perhaps the PS3, a game console and a computer that can play modern games plus the OS needed to run them are two very different things when it comes to price.

[edit: the above two posts were not present when this post was written.]

Right, I was going to make this an edit to my previous post, but then people might miss it. So I'll put it here.

I don't know why I'm arguing at all. It's stupid. Instead I'll just briefly go over everyone's points and leave it at that.

Kailieann: I completely agree with you. I current have zero programs which require .NET. It's a large runtime - one of the things that turned me off of VB - and it's made by Microsoft. Maybe this does make me a fanboy but I simply don't trust Microsoft, neither to make decent code nor to not spy on me, screw me over, etc. Yes I use Windows XP but if all goes well I won't for much longer. The only reason I'm not using Linux now is lack of support for my shitty hardware, and replacing it is a high priority.
BTW, I know two programs that require .NET with no decent alternative: BatchDPG (Moonshell movie encoder) and nLite (Windows customization tool). However, nLite can somehow be run without .NET - not sure how, but it works. BatchDPG does have an alternative, included with Moonshell, it just doesn't work as well.

Plus Sign Abomination: I misunderstood you. It happens. This could be because: A) I'm not perfect, B) You're not perfect, and/or C) I didn't sleep well last night. I agree with you, I just thought you meant something else which frankly would have been stupid.

FreeDOS+: You make some excellent points and provide some very useful info for non-Windows users, but as Kailieann pointed out, some people just plain don't want .NET.

Valcion: Weren't you permabanned some time ago? Do you do anything besides troll?

Thexare, Xkeeper D1337 : Are those statements at all necessary? Insulting/trolling posts like these only make the situation worse and make you look like a jerk. It hardly makes sense to feed the flames, then complain about the fire.
As for "anti-Microsoft crap", I said Microsoft because .NET and XNA are Microsoft products. Though I don't trust Microsoft, I don't hate them either. I dislike .NET, and that's about it as far as this thread goes.

I don't understand why people on this board are so quick to start flaming and trolling over a simple mistake instead of simply pointing it out. PSA, if you'd just said something like "No, I meant they should have more user-generated content" this mess could have been avoided. I think everyone here, including myself, needs to consider that next time.

Depends on the size of the farm. Nintendo has money but they aren't swimming in it like Microsoft. According to NexGenWars there have been 1,792,196 Wii consoles sold to date. Since they're online 24/7 that means they probably all download the updates around the same time. That's nearly two million downloads plus the traffic generated by their web sites and online games.

Ah, well that's different then. Still probably a lot of downloads at once though.

Anyone know what wireless hardware the Wii uses? The DS intentionally used really slow hardware so it could be cheaper because they never intended to do anything that would need a higher speed. Maybe they did that with Wii too, even though they included a browser this time.
