Walk the Line This is actually what made think of this thread, I heard such good things. It wasn't bad, but, it wasn't really that good either. The plot was basically the same as every single other celebrity biography movie. I'm not saying that's not how his life went, but if there wasn't anything about his life that set it apart, maybe he wasn't the best candidate for a biography movie. Maybe if I was a Johnny Cash fan. But if I was it wouldn't make lines like "I'm not going to be the little Dutch boy holding my finger in the dike anymore" any less stupid.
THANK YOU! This movie was also highly praised by reviewers and various people I know, so I expected it to grab me and make me want to buy the DVD. I thought it was OK to good overall, but I didn't get what the big deal was. The beginning was great, especially the dramatization of Johnny Cash's record deal and the part where he met June, but it slid into mehville somewhere in the middle. I didn't think June and Johnny had that much chemistry. I mean, I knew she cared about him because she stuck by him even though he was wrestling with addictions, but it didn't feel like I was watching a real relationship unfold. Their interaction with each other seemed arbitrary at times. Example: that bus scene where June is magically perky and sassy immediately after having been woken up and then rejects Johnny's marriage proposal for nonsensical reasons. Ohnoes the rules say the d00d can't propose on a bus at 2 a.m.!!1!!eleventy I'm a sucker for fuzzy wuzzy onscreen couples (I cried at the end of Titanic - more than once - go ahead, laugh, I can handle it ), but this one didn't affect me.

The latter half of the movie had continuity problems that got on my nerves. For example, in one scene, Johnny is down and out and sharing an apartment with Waylon Jennings. The phone is being shut off, and Johnny freaks because the bank won't cash a check for him. Soon after that, he's wandering through the woods and winds up buying a brand-new house. Buh?

Plus, I hoped to see a wee bit more of the inspiration for Johnny's music. There was a bit of that (e.g. the scene where June was working on "Ring of Fire"), but not really much, which is probably one reason why Walk the Line came off as a garden-variety biopic.

I love the Ratchet and Clank series. Platforming action, lots of amusing and useful weapons, RPG elements (killing enemies gets you experience that levels up your life meter and weapons).... I haven't played the first game, but I was addicted to Going Commando (replayed it multiple times) and got through most of Up Your Arsenal. I liked Going Commando better, but Up Your Arsenal is also great if you don't mind a more action-oriented focus. The developers implemented the increased action very well. You have a series of self-contained missions in a smallish, enclosed area. Even if you fail a mission, you'll get weapons and character experience and more than enough bolts (money) to refill your ammo, so you're getting stronger as you keep trying. I had to try many of the missions multiple times, but for the reasons I mentioned, it was an enjoyable experience. I haven't finished Up Your Arsenal because the last boss is difficult and I got distracted by other games, but still, it's fun.

Both games start out easy and increase in difficulty in a reasonable, fair, and doable way. Dying (which is going to happen often ) puts you at a continue point, and you essentially have unlimited lives, so this will never force you to restart the level. Theoretically speaking, you might have difficulties if you run out of ammo and have no way to refill it, but this never gave me any problems. There are certain points in the game where I had to make multiple trips to complete an area (for instance, I didn't have enough ammo to get all 100 desert crystals at the same time), but you can do a lot in one round, so it never gets annoying. The game also provides shortcuts to let you skip difficult stretches of an area that you already completed. I like a fair, fun challenge and detest unfair cheap shots, and I loved these games. This should tell you that the frustration factor is low.

I had all four taken out yesterday. Three were simple extractions. The fourth was horizontal under the gum. The simple extractions are pretty much done being owey. The fourth is sore and giving me a chipmunk cheek on the right side of my face. I have a prescription for generic Vicodin, but it didn't seem to do anything other than give me a nasty dizzy/cold sweat/nauseous spell that (thankfully) went away after a few minutes lying on the floor and praying I wouldn't hurl. Screw that...I'll stick to good old standard ibuprofen.

Yeah, yesterday pretty much sucked, what with the nasty taste in the back of my throat, the grogginess, and the general feeling of grumpiness from not having been allowed to eat for 6 hours before the operation. I didn't do much other than keep falling asleep on the floor.

At least today is much better now that the anesthesia is out of my system and the mouth pain has gone down. And I have a good excuse to live off pudding for the near future. Mmm...pudding.

Danielle - Sounds like your friend had an especially bad case. Depending on how yours come in, you might have a much easier recovery. It can also help to get them out when you're young before the roots form.

1174 - No worries...it was a polite lecture, so I appreciate it. I thought that, as a NSAID, ibuprofen might help with the swelling in my mouth and any pain related to that. It has worked well for other inflammation-type pain I've had. That cranky spot in my mouth is feeling better, but if it starts getting on my nerves, I'll find some acetaminophen. The other ingredient in the generic Vicodin must have been what was making me feel sick. Normal acetaminophen never bothered me, and I'm aware that it actually is a painkiller. I'll save you some pudding...my friends brought over a ton of it, and I don't know if I can eat it all myself.

Trapster - Some people have enough room in their jawbone for all of their wisdom teeth. If yours are all aligned properly, maybe you can just get that cavity filled.

Ziff - Were you lucky enough to be born without any wisdom teeth?

Unless they're properly aligned, they can be difficult to clean and get cavities easily. They can also become infected or cause damage to the neighboring teeth and bone. I'm not sure how that works, but I thought preemptive surgery sounded much more pleasant.

All I have to say after getting two of my wisdom teeth pulled is, if I were inclined to do some sort of drug, nitrous oxide would be my drug of choice. Heh heh.
My anesthesia experience wasn't quite that interesting...more like "amazingly efficient". I got an IV of something that hurt as it circulated throughout my hand, then I started counting backward from 100 and then the next thing I knew, I was awake and done. What exactly is nitrous like, anyway?

Thanks for the well wishes...I really appreciate it. The inside of my mouth feels pretty normal, but my jaw is still swollen and stiff and rather sore. I keep microwaving a wet washcloth and putting it on my cheek, but it doesn't seem to help much. I can chew - sort of - but I can't open my mouth that widely, so it's best to stick to rather soft foods that I can easily spoon into my mouth. Somehow I get the idea that I shouldn't resume my normal strenuous workout routine until I can eat normally again. Argh. I know I'm not going to turn Stay-Puft in a week, but it's still annoying.

In response to Colin's comment about being put under - I had the procedure done by an oral surgeon, and I probably got general instead of local because I had that one weird tooth that was lodged sideways underneath the gum. If it had come in like the others, it would have been easier to extract, so I could have probably just had a buttload of Novocaine. My insurance should cover most of the cost of the operation.

I saw it earlier today. My verdict...not the worst movie I've seen, but bleh nonetheless. The sets, creatures, and visual effects looked awesome, but it didn't add up to anything compelling or scary. The movie tried way too hard to get the characters into the town quickly and scare the audience at the same time, and as a result, that crucial intro felt rushed and implausible. The place is not on any maps and the locals don't want to tell where it is, but the turnoff is clearly labeled. Why? And what gives with Rose and Sharon immediately going apeshit at the staticy radio and then seeing the ghost girl and crashing? In my view, Rose should have had to research the route to the town, digging through archives and chatting with both helpful and unhelpful people. Along with the audience, she would have gotten a very bad feeling about the place, but she would feel even more compelled to go there because her daughter's condition kept getting worse. (More should have been shown of that, too.) The trip itself should have felt subtly off, adding to the building sense of foreboding, culminating in the ghost girl appearance and crash. As it stood, the trip seemed about as well-planned and urgent as a 2 a.m. boredom run to Wal-Mart, and it was not nearly as scary as it should have been.

Many puzzles were solved with straight up video game logic, which was laughable. I'm not talking about Rose following any possible clue to find her daughter in the mysterious town (what else was she going to do?) but about occurrences like following a Captain Obvious paper trail to a specific, implausibly concealed room and using a newly found item to proceed and then conveniently losing it in an arbitrary and clumsy way (the movie equivalent of "This item can't be used any more!") The hospital map and the bus route diagram were unintentionally hilarious for this reason.

I really did not care for the backstory, either. There were obvious similarities with the story of the first game, but that story actually came together for me, and this did not. Without spoiling anything, let's just say that it explained too much of certain goings-on and characters' experiences without giving any insight into some characters' origins, true nature, and relationships to each other. I also didn't understand why a certain character was weak in one context - forcing people to come and find them - and then spawned an ability to wreak great and terrible deeds later on. This sort of happened in the first game, but there was more internal logic to that character there, so it wasn't a giant WTF moment for me. I have nothing against the idea of not knowing who the "good" and "bad" guys really are (or having sides that are arguably both "good" and "bad"), but there's a difference between that sort of open-endedness and Swiss cheese muddle. I liked the ambiguity of the ending, though.

I sold my old NES to help pay for a SNES, but I had another NES, so I didn't mind. (The reason I had two consoles was so I could keep one at each parent's house.) My mom got rid of my old Atari consoles and games at some point. Other than that, I still have every game I've ever bought. I like to hold onto games because I never know when I or a friend might want to play them in the future. They don't take up too much room, and if Randy and I needed money, we would rather cut back on other expenses (like cooking more food from scratch and buying less convenience food) than get rid of media that we might never be able to replace.

I do want to get rid of the PS2 Spyro game, though, because it's a buggy piece of crap and I never want to play it again, so it's dead meat on my game shelf.

Hooray. Everything is mostly back to normal. The Chip 'n Dale face is almost gone - you can't tell my cheek is swollen unless you look at it closely. There is a bruise on my jaw, but it's not that bad. I still can't open my mouth the entire way, but eh, that takes time, and at least I can open it enough for most foods that I like. I don't think I'm allowed to eat nuts for a couple of weeks, though.

I forgot to mention that I really enjoyed that early "chase into the alley" scene because I thought it was a great video game reference. First off, Rose's actions made sense to me. She was running after what she thought was her daughter, and there was no obvious danger or anything that should have given her pause. Thus, it was not a silly "OMG I'm going to run outside after the killer just banged on the door" sort of plot device. It paralleled the similar scene in the beginning of the first Silent Hill game, right down to the camera shifting overhead, which was a nifty nod to the fans that worked well in the context of a movie because it showed just how closed in and winding the path was. Although I've seen most of the first game (and therefore knew what was going to happen), it was still fun to watch because I wanted to see how it would be portrayed in the movie. I liked the game's creatures better, as they seemed much more creepy and threatening, whereas the tar babies came off as insentient and impersonal, but it was still a good scene. And the movie did a better job at ending it. Hooray for Johnny Cash.

And I'd like to say thank you to the thread for sharing dissenting opinions on this movie in a polite way. Most Silent Hill discussion I've seen elsewhere degrades into mudslinging wankery all too quickly. I think Pyramid Head ought to pay a visit to the IMDB boards.

I can do a pretty good siren impression. It's a simple vocal exercise that teaches you to smoothly sing through the breaks between registers. This weekend, I was visiting the Sideling Hill tunnel on the abandoned stretch of Pennsylvania turnpike near Breezewood. I did the siren in the maintenance area above the tunnel (basically, an attic that runs its full length) and freaked out one of my friends, who was downstairs and couldn't figure out what the siren was from. The echo down the mile-long tunnel was crucial to the overall effect.

I want to visit Centralia before it's completely collapsed and/or evacuated. I live in central PA, so it would be a doable day trip. When this happens, pictures will follow. (I do have lots of tunnel pictures - and many of them are Silent Hill-ish - but I have to sort and upload them.)

Nope. I'm a programmer. I have very basic knowledge of construction, but it really isn't much. Luckily one of my good friends has done quite a lot of this sort of work with his dad, so he's helping us redo a wall in our living room. What we have now is shoddy homemade shelving and a really craptacular entertainment center installed by the previous owner over an ugly plain plywood backing. The nonstructural 2x4's behind the plywood could stand to be improved, too. We're in the process of tearing out the entire thing and putting up better 2x4's, a luan plywood layer, and knotty pine planks, and then we'll install nice plain pine shelves on wooden brackets. Too bad we have an ugly '60s red brick fireplace, but we'll work on that later.

Before Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX) got re-released as a Greatest Hits title and when it was still rare, I bought a used copy in great condition off somebody on GameFAQs for $20 + shipping. Randy found a nearly mint condition used copy of Super Puzzle Fighter II (PSX) - another rare game that tends to be expensive - for a reasonable price at an Electronics Boutique a while back. I also found Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Greatest Hits used for $10. I knew the non-GH version was a bit more desirable because it had a couple of extra familiars, but they were redundant and you needed a cheat device to get to them, so I didn't really care. Now that that game is difficult to find in general, I'm glad I bought it when I saw it.
