This is looking good. I hope the level design is as good as the ExGFX, it's hard to tell in these little screenshots.

Anyway, yeah. Fix the statusbar palette stuff that these guys are talking about and it should be rad. Time for a good old fashioned screenshot review...!

1. Those bushes look out of place given the ground they're on, but SMB All Stars bushes are fun and interesting so maybe you might just want to change the ground.
2. Nice background. The pipe has this little ugly green border around it you need to fix. The trees alone are enough to make me want to play the hack.
3. Super nifty. Am I the only one that's still impressed by the graphics of All-Stars? I don't care if it's been done before: they're still better than the normal ones. Also, give Lakitu some shading love or something because his style looks out of place. Not necessary, though.
4. Nifty. The corners are a little... pointy. Might want to fix that.
5. Although sprite-wise it looks bare, the dual-level type idea I like very much and it looks very good.
6. Uhhm... I can't say I like it too much. The brown ones look crappy, and it only works from Mario's perspective. I suggest you lay some blocks over the brown ones somehow so they totally look better but you don't have to and I can't describe the problem very well.
7. The pipe is an enigma. The cement blocks, wood, and clouds altogether kind of clash. I suggest you change the clouds into cement, but I haven't seen the rest of the level yet.
8. Oh nooooo I hate these levels but go ahead and do it anyway. That's just me. I suggest you make the wood sort of "meld" into the other wood so it creates a maze. That would look slick.
9. Again, it would look prettier if you didn't use so many seperate wood things because they kind of float on top of each other to begin with and they don't have a reason to be broken. Just like heal some of the breaks and only keep the necessary ones. Also, this level looks kind of boring but it's just one screenshot so I dunno.
10. Yaaaaay. The yellow glass should maybe be brighter, however, but I suck at shiny things so I can't really say anything here.
11. Hooray, the switch! This entire level looks boring and drab, maybe. Add some things like background pillars to spice it up.
12. The SMB2 clashes with the SMB3 ground. In addition, the cement blocks there make the SMB3 ground look crappy the way it just suddenly stops there. Round off some edges. Also, I'm assuming there was an enemy to the left. There should have been.
13. Mmm. Delicious SMB2 background. Get rid of the white spots on the rope, if you can. No big deal, but what the hey. Looks rad. Make sure to make a big maze with plenty of secrets in there! Also, at least two non-boo enemies.
14. Make edge stumps for the bridges. It just looks silly without it. Those bridges only make sense when it goes directly into a wall. You could just raise the beach up a bit. Also, the edge of the beach in the water has tan surrounding it. Not good. I'm guessing this is the edge of the entire continent.
15. Ah! The bridge looks better. Final Crossing sounds lame. Well, for a beach. You can only use it if there are swords. And purple. This part looks kind of tediously uninteresting, but maybe you just need to take better screenshots. If you're not crying with joy at your levels, change them.
16. Okay... I'm guessing the name is a joke because it doesn't look very cool at all. First of all, the SMB2 edges have green around them. And... that's it. So maybe it is cool. Sue me.
17. yay I like this level
18. This level's looking cool, too. If there aren't lots of dangerous monsters, I'll be disappointed.
19. hooray I hate beezos This level looks good, although a bit blocky. I wonder what's in the water...
20. The grounds are cool. The really big block you used as a wall is dumb. Try using something else, instead. Like, take a normal block and make it darker.
21. okay fine another pyramid level First of all, the lava and the adjacent blocks look funny. Bad, in fact. Also, cutting apart blocks at arbitrary places does not make them interesting. Cut them up less. The ceiling's okay to cut up, though, but you want some consistency with the ground. Unless Shyguys fall out of this pipe, the level doesn't look very interesting... Try using black tar for the lava, or yellow quicksand.
22. This level is the only one so far that looks outright not-very-good. It doesn't make sense how the blocks have cracks in them. The white shine on the blocks thing is probably a palette issue, but it's still annoying. It needs to be a little dimmer. Maybe you should think about how the enemies are going to be used in a level? People are rarely killed by a goomba or a koopa unless they're put someplace good or the ground's slippery... then again, I can't really tell with the screenshots. Put a hidden 1-UP block in the water somewhere. Also the background doesn't look too hot.
23. Doesn't look bad... the door should be a portal instead, though. I mean, come on. But that's probably impossible. So yeah, change the palette. Also, the black blocks look cool but the background clashes with them so I suggest you change the background's palette, too.
24. I like it a lot. Don't change too much.
25. NEEDS MOAR PURPLE
26. The beach that touches the water looks funky. Make the beach a block higher before the big orange block and make it go behind the orange block so you can make the left edge go straight down. Also, tan edges aren't fun. This level looks kind of boring. Orange blocks probably aren't that buoyant.
27. Ooh, cool. The bottom of the trees touching the leaves are cut off, though...
28. The ice blocks suffer from crappy borders. And it'll be good if you can tell the difference between the walky ice and the swimmy ice. And you can't jump through ice without hurting your head or breaking the ice.
29. Boring. Now's a good a time as any to note that there are no coins in any of these screenshots. What gives? I like coins. Bring them back. What's up with the green in the giant ice blocks?
30. Oh! That looks cool and original. I like it, although the SMB2 bombable brick suffers from a little cutoffitude. No big deal.

But that's like, for people that have nothing better to do. If I wanted to play mind games, I'd play with my friends and force them to kill their families. Besides, it would be lame to play just for postcount. You know? Anyway, Cave Story is always something better to do and there's most often someone on the SMW forums saying something stupid.

Well, uh, yeah you'll probably end up fighting Bowser at some point... I don't think there's much you can do about that. But with some creativity and some hard work, you can actually make "bosses" that aren't just Reznor and Ludwig fifty times in a row, BMF had a good example of that stuff. I like that stuff a lot, but I really wouldn't really mind if there weren't any bosses at all, if the levels were fun enough...

You really seem to be angry that this isn't going to work because this person seems to be aiming too high. You should at least be glad someone's trying to make something interesting and exciting. What do you propose people do about Bowser and stuff? I mean, you seem to know a lot...

Anyway, you say "the game's concept blows." Well, that's all fine and dandy, but you haven't really said why it sucks besides the fact that "YOU CANNOT CHANGE ENOUGH TO MAKE IT INTERESTING YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO JUMP SOMETIME IT'S A MARIO GAME" and "IT IS JAPANESE I HATE THAT OKAY" Well, uh, why do you hate Anime? I mean, it's not bad, it's just that many of the fans surrounding it are just dumb. No one has said "KAWAII" or "BAKA" yet, just you. And me, 'cause you made me. Pretty much you seem to just not like this game because it's Japanese. Yeah, I'm sick of people trying to do Japanese stuff to be cool, too, but whatever. If it plays well, I won't mind.

If you don't like the storyline or stuff, maybe you shouldn't pay attention to it? Really, you seem angry only because people are trying to push the limits of SMW... what do you propose people do? Make thousands of storyless hacks about Mario trying to save the Princess from Bowser's magic spell? Ahhh. Makes me mad. We need something new, and this hack (if JP ever picks it up again) looks original. Sure, doing Japanese sword gun stuff isn't new, but I haven't seen anybody do this for a SMW hack.

Hey, yeah, at least they're better than the original graphics, but yeah they're getting old. I'd really like to see a hack where the person makes their own ground tiles... I think that might be incentive enough for me to try to start one.

First. That is the biggest afro I've ever seen in a video game. Second. There's really not much to say. I guess I could say "it looks good" but really what makes Yoshi's Island good is cohesion. Second, the absence of a background is appreciated, but scares me. Ahhh. It's like... Level 3-5. "Uh oh where's the Ozone Layer"

Yeah, single YI screenshots are hard to critique, because it looks like you took them in the middle of the level and the levels are big and Yoshi moves fast so I really can't say much.

I bet it was your mom. I never did like her anyway. Everytime I went over, she always told me to "go to your own house if you want to use the bathroom" but the toilet at your house was a different color and I liked it better. Jerk. Also, she never gave me any cookies.

Personally, I like the new FAQ a little. The old one had more information, but the new one blinks and definitely gets the point across. I hope the stupid people learn their lessons soon... also, don't mess with administrators or you're going to get zapped. It's like yelling at the police for enforcing the law, and it's probably going to end the same way, too.

I'm really really glad that all QFT posts and stuff are abolished. They were totally getting on several of my nerves, if not all of them.

Mmmm, I like the overworld lots, but Alastor's pretty much right about the right-angleness of a lot of areas being unnatural. So, there's that. The design is good.

That spaceship is pretty funny. I laughed at it... although it's not much else.

I like the water. It seems vaguely familiar, but it looks good anyway. The sandy parts are really... undefined. They need borders or something. Also, it's unnaturally pointy. I know people have used that GFX in other hacks, but I never got around to complaining until now. Also, the plot is ehh. I mean, games are cool with no plot, but... yeah. If nothing else, I suggest you make a snazzy logo or explain it a little more. "One month has passed." Since the events of SMW? The "But, Evil has returned" just seems like it was supposed to go at the end of something else. But whatever. It's not really important.

The SMBGBAWHATEVER rips are boring and uninspired. This is added to by the fact that the background isn't changed, so it looks... uh, not good, really? I mean, SMW backgrounds are fine, but they've just been used so many times they're not really interesting anymore unless the level design is good... which looks kind of ehh. As people have said before, it's pretty impossible to tell whether the level design is good from a couple screenshots, but it looks pretty ehhh. The main problem I forsee you having is the placement of enemies. I mean, just putting enemies into a level doesn't automatically make it good. You need to put them in interesting formations or strategic placements so they're going to cause an inexperienced player trouble and benefit a good one. Remember, the player can easily just jump over all of these enemies. Also, what's with people and coins? I really haven't seen many coins in these hacks... I suggest putting 100 coins or so in a level, total, or maybe 50.

The third one is either just a bad screenshot or what. There's nothing there besides some rips and a Koopa. And it's not a very hard-to-kill koopa, anyway.

Hmm. It looks cool. The SMAS rips are eh, and they kind of clash, though. I seriously suggest you only do this for a sub-zone, though, because it looks like it's going to get boring fast. And it's just a rip, really. I suggest you use originality for the main game and rips for sub-zone themes, because... yeah.

Yeah, it looks "good" in the asthetic sense, but it kind of clashes as I said before and the giant things don't really make any sense either. It looks good at first, and then after a couple minutes you just go "how is this gonna work" and then it deteriorates into "man I dunno about this hack".

Hmm... it sounds like your hack is going to be all rips. Unless you make it really interesting and the level design really good, I dunno if I'm going to play it because so far it sounds like just a Zelda "skin" for Super Mario World. Hmm. Well, maybe whatever. Try to make your hack super-cool to make up for it.

The color choices are very bad, as the others have said. Your edited pictures (the smiley blocks) are appreciated, but bland and uninspired. The overworld palette is good, but it looks like you stuck a bunch of crap in there and pretended it was good. It looks cluttered and unorganized.

Yeah, the Retro-World sounds kind of rehashed boring. Why don't you pay tribute to other platforming games instead? That way, you get to rehash stuff and it's not something everybody's played before. Or you could actually make a "special" world.

Okay. "Urban theme while making heavy use of vegetation." So I'm going to guess it's like the first level in Power Rangers? I don't think there's any way you can't change less than the palette of the overworld and still have those levels make sense.

Uh, well, none of these ideas seem bad in theory... I guess.

Augh, I like these sprites a lot. If you release them, try to limit what they can do with them because I don't want them to become the crap cliche that every new SMW hacker uses to make his hack "cool" like the SMAS rips. I'd hate to see your hard work turn into something so terrible... and they probably wouldn't give you credit for the pictures, anyway.

I don't know if the second picture is better, but it's definitely funnier. I don't really know about this hack... if all you have is a picture of Mario done, you have a really really long way to go. There's not much to say, either. I guess this idea is... okay? I dunno, the wolf has no background, no story, this topic kind of feels like you just woke up one day and were like "Dude. Super. Wolfie. Brothers. BEST HACK EVER." then spent like a half-hour editing Mario. More information means more potential to be awesome.

You should probably take the hat away if you're going to take away the rest of the clothing... oh yeah, Luigi. Forgot. You might to want to make the brown you're using for borders a little bit darker, because it clashes. You don't have to think of the title now, either. Just keep the title this way until you think of a better one because I think it pretty much delivers what this topic's supposed to be about.

Well, the sprites are good. The star looks like it actually might look really cool flashing. I duno about the flower, though... it looks kind of bland. The feather's okay, and I dunno about the coins. ... yeah, the berries look kind of flat and weird. You have to squint to make them look cool.

The first hack title is squished and craptacular. It looks like it was made in MSPAINT in like five miniconds. Don't use it. The second one is like a JPG and it looks crap because of it. I suppose it might be okay, but it's kind of squishy still. The last one is really big but it might actually be pretty good. I think you might should use it.

Uhm, I guess they're okay. I mean, uh, the small bits are okay. You can't gp wrong with those! But I'd add like another shade to this stuff so it has more depth (unless this is like the entire game's style, in which case I'm not one to say anything and in fact your graphics are pretty awesome if you're going for a monochrome gameboy style and stuff), and maybe go over the larger goomba so it looks a little more like the small one. You know, the cheeks and stuff.

I'm no sprite artist, but I did a little here and there to fix it up for you. The left cheek is considerably screwed up and I have no idea what I'm supposed to do there. I didn't really fix the feet or the podium thing. Heheheheh... Oh, and I changed the format to .PNG because it is omega-superior for displaying and using sprites. Then I gave it a red transparent background because the gray one was quadruple-confusing.

I hope this helps! Your sprites aren't great, (maybe they are to people that suck at spriting) but with a little time and effort they could be double-awesome. Your originality is good, too. Keep at it!

And EarthBound is awesome. Just wanted to get that out of the way.

[EDIT: Added GENERIC SHADING on the plaque and stuff. I would with the pillars, if it was my work, but hey.]

The impaled toad looks kind of familiar... wasn't the same thing used in another hack? Also, this is a terrible plot. "Bowser has impaled Toad. Mario gets revenge." It sounds like the plot for a movie at Newgrounds or something. But don't let me stop you. Keep going with it. Maybe you can make a cinematic instruction booklet like Donkey Kong.

The first one has a really slick border rip. The text is well-shaped, but the level design is blocky and terrible and the letters are actually impossible to read. Try going for colors that stand out.

Second. Nice rip, again. Again, your blocky positioning looks unnatural and... uh... blocky. Yes. Bad. Also, the Toad looks like you just smeared red on it in MSPAINT.

Third. Nice rip, nothing too terrible here.

Fourth. This looks awesome, like Grasstown in Cave Story. Keep on making it cool. Don't screw it up.

That looks like an awesome cloud level, but clouds are more curvy and rain is not black.

Nice rip. Okay. Again. You took MSPAINT and put tears of blood on Buttface and a weird symbol on Mondo Miller. They would only look cool if they didn't look like crap. They look superimposed and uncharacteristically unrealistic. FIx it!

Anyway. You guys that like his "custom GFX". I have some advice for you. Get higher standards. This is like craphand drawing here. It's... bad. I really don't want to live in a world where Leonardo Da Vinci just drew stick figures and was praised as the world's greatest prodigy. Otherwise, I have no problem with your hearty respect for creativity, rips, etc.
