It's not a hard drive, it's 512MB of flash plus an SD card reader. The ROMs will undoubtedly be encrypted to stop people from copying them.

I do wonder, though, if Nintendo could provide a way to dump your old carts onto it. That'd solve the problem that you have to buy multiple copies.

unsigned int MK64LevelHeaderLoc = 0x122390;

unsigned int MK64TextureBaseAddr = 0x641F70;


That's the location of the first track's header (should be Mario Raceway), the sky colour table, and the texture base address.

I'm not the only one that does that combo of commands? Damn, I thought I was smart when I pieced those together a good while back on my own.

I always do that when taking screenshots so I don't have to trim the white space around it. So few people seem to realize this can be done, and you end up with an 800x600 screenshot being a mostly-white 2000x2000 bitmap.

They had a few good analogies on their site. Consider the blocks to be like a pen and paper. These aren't illegal. You can make millions of different drawings with them; some of them might infringe on copyright, but most won't. Basically they're supplying blocks of random nonsense; it's up to you to supply the formula (the file link) that turns this nonsense into a copy of Never Ever by Hamasaki Ayumi. A different formula might turn it into a picture of George Bush. A picture of Bush isn't illegal, so why would the data used to make it be?

Funny, too... I thought of this sort of thing quite some time ago (write a program that makes music out of any random binary file, and distribute what would be an illegal copy of something as a song instead) but I couldn't think of a way that didn't still mean distributing copies of the file itself.

No, the header isn't compressed.


Edit: I tested those offsets. Textures and skies load correctly now, but level offsets seem to be shifted as before.

Can you access all the levels (Moo Moo Farm and DK Jungle might not work) despite having the wrong names? They could have reordered them.

Hm, that video reminds me of a Mario's on Shroomz code I made ages ago by combining trippy effect codes... then lost when my POS Gameshark died. Apparently, everyone thought it was cool but nobody bothered to save a copy.

I think you want (SIZEOF_MK64LEVELHEADER * (Level + 10)). If this works, then it's possible the levels are reordered or you found the wrong header.

Moo Moo Farm doesn't work, not sure why exactly. Frappe Snowland should though.

Mario Kart Super Circuit does this too. It's certainly a nice idea. Shrinking palettes isn't such a good idea, though. You'd want to do a similar allocation system for palettes, where each sprite loads whatever one it needs only if such a palette isn't already loaded. If you wanted to get really advanced, you could designate a given sprite as only using X colours, then if a second sprite only needs Y colours, and X and Y can both fit into one palette, you recolour the graphics as they're decompressed so that both sprites are actually using one palette.

Or do it like Pokémon G/S, and just load one set of colours for the level for all sprites to use. G/S actually uses the same palette (swapping a few colours here and there) for every level, and just switches palettes for morning/day/night. It works very well; having one palette per level (and four times as many colours per palette) should be plenty for SMW.

That sounds right. It might be better to store the sprite graphics uncompressed in ROM though (or use a weak compression that won't take too long to decode) so they don't need to be copied to RAM. Graphics are big, especially since sprites tend to be animated, and using enough sprites would quickly eat up all that RAM.

(Or add an expansion chip such as SA-1 to do the decompression. )
