Posted on 06-28-06 06:00 PM, in General Super Mario 64 hacking / TT64 Progress thread Link
If we make a new forum, it'd best be something generic like N64 Hacking or 3D Hacking, not just Mario 64 Hacking. Keep in mind that F-Zero X, Mario 64, Zelda OoT and Mario Kart 64 are the only ones that even have editors in the works (I think OoT does), and of those, only F-Zero X and Mario 64 are even close to being complete. It could go two ways: There might be a few threads about each game, maybe enough to warrant a new forum for them all but not one for each game. Or there could suddenly be a lot of discussion about them, which would leave the question "why does Maio 64 get its own forum and not the other 3"?

As for open-source, it's a good thing, but I agree that it seems almost insulting to talk about "making a good, open-source editor" when VL-Tone's isn't even up to V1.0 and is still in active development. I think VL should simply release the source under whatever license, with some links to the various threads and pages that hold the information, and if anyone wants to make a second editor, that should be all they need. It's always been my opinion that there should be at least 2 separate programs for every task, in case one doesn't work/isn't what you wanted/etc, but let's not completely ignore the guy who's doing most if not all of the work. (Who here besides the people who posted in this thread and my archived thread has even worked on SM64? And how many of those people have done any work on it recently? )

FYI, about Mario Kart: Yes, the format is a bit similar, but not very. The commands, headers, and I think geometry data are all completely different. Also I haven't decided on a license yet. Most people think open source == GPL, and I'm really not a fan of that. Why shouldn't someone be able to use my code in a commercial app? Sure I'd be kinda upset if someone just took the whole program, changed a few minor things, and made a bunch of money off it, but all that means is I should have tried whatever they did. It seems greedy to deny everyone the right to copy one or two pieces of code into their commercial program just because someone might do that.

Stuffed Crust from Pizza Hut is the food of the gods, but the actual pizza is usually not that great. The other pizza place in town makes great pizza with crappy crust. Oh, if only...

Anyway I usually end up getting Pepperoni or Hawaiian from there, and dipping the crust in Ranch sauce to cover the taste. They're both pretty good.

Either here or ROM hacking I suppose. Technically ASM hacking is hacking ROMs by reprogramming them, so... I guess it depends mainly on whether you're looking for how to find and modify ASM in the ROM, or just general info on the language itself ("ASM hacking" vs "ASM coding").

Well, solar power is one option, but it's difficult to use. The light tends to not stay in a straight line. Or you can buy a really nice electric shovel in Space Japan... for 300,000 Space Dollars.

Try to just get the biggest sticks you can; if your motherboard supports 1GB in a single stick, go with that. Then you can upgrade in up to 1GB steps without having to throw out the ones you already have. Keep speed in mind too, though - faster memory can be better than more memory in some cases.
Also, HP computers (for that matter, most pre-built computers) tend to come with a lot of junk bogging them down. Build your own, install Windows XP, and let it find the drivers for your hardware; don't bother with the extremely bloated install packages that come with the devices except as a last resort, since they usually install a lot of crap (fancy graphical interfaces that just do the same thing Windows can already do on its own and other stuff). If Windows can't find a driver, put the install CD in but DON'T run the installer - hold Shift while you put the disc in to disable AutoRun. Then have it look on the disc itself. That works almost every time, if not, THEN use the installer and clean up after it.
Even when it does get drivers off the Internet, you might end up with some junk, but usually you just close the processes and remove the startup entries in MSConfig or the registry editor.

Or use Linux and not have to worry about bloated driver installers in most cases.

BTW, Chaos Force is right, building your own is a lot easier than you might think. Just wear rubber gloves if possible to avoid static damage, and read the manuals. Most things are designed so they can't fit in the wrong way or the wrong place.

Installing one version of Windows overtop of another - even just an upgrade or new service pack - tends to cause these sorts of problems. You might have to reformat, but you can always copy your files to DVDs, another hard disk/partition, etc. This is why I have one partition for Windows and another for my files.

I know that screen doesn't show up if you use one of the level modes that says "do not use this mode", but I'm not sure if that's how Yoshi's House does it or why they shouldn't be used.

I was about one foot from being crapped on a while ago. Seagulls are annoying (I made the mistake of feeding them when I was younger ) but it's fun to run into a group of them and scare them off.

dont complain -- I had a global history teacher last year that said I did NONE of my homework when I did it all. gave me, like, a 68 (Im in honors History). I DID IT ALL GODF***ING D*** IT. she said my friend was absent about 30 days (enough to fail) even though ALL HER OTHER CLASES HAD LIKE 10!!! Also, she did no homework, and nobody said she didnt.

Reminds me of my literacy exam that everyone has to take. I failed the first year because they lost half of my work and claimed I hadn't done it! I put it in the envelope, sealed it shut just like they said, and sent it in; when I got it back several of the assignments were missing and marked as not being attempted. I got it the second year though.

Another such story was the first semester of my last year. I went into my English class on the first day, they went over a lot of pointless shit like peoples' names, and then class was over. The second day the teacher handed out math textbooks. Turns out they'd changed the room number - they told me what it would be in July, before they actually made any plans - and hadn't bothered to tell me about the change. They didn't even notice when I didn't show up for English, and then the attendance sheet for that Math class had my name scribbled in at the bottom. Since nothing they'd mentioned the first day had anything to do with English or Math, I had no way to tell where I was supposed to be. My schedule was even printed with the wrong number.

But I just recieved my diploma today, so they can all go stick it somewhere.
