I've gone from Pittsburgh, PA to the British Isles (England as a little kid, Ireland ten years ago). Last year, we went from Pittsburgh to Belize. Randy's dad and stepmom absolutely love to travel, so they had a destination wedding there. It was a fun long weekend.

The longest I've ever driven is from State College to Bloomington/Normal, IL, which took about 12 hours in light traffic and clear weather. I've also been on family road trips from Pittsburgh to the Outer Banks, NC, which involved a similar length of travel time.

You should know it...you've sent me cards. Or just do a whois lookup on rydain.org. I'm open about my identity...but for some reason, it feels weird to just post my name right out of the blue in the middle of a thread.

Word. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is one of my favorite mottoes.

With that said...I like the look of the characters as standalone designs, but as Bomberman characters, they seem...wrong. As was mentioned upthread, there's tweaking a cartoony character to give it an updated look that's true to the original concept, and then there's veering way off for the sake of being edgy and X-TREEEEEEME. An example of a good, "mature" character update is Link in Twilight Princess. He's drawn more realistically than he is in Ocarina of Time, but he still looks like Link. It's not as if they replaced him with a model of The Rock in a green tunic. I'm not going to judge the games until I know what the gameplay is like, but these character designs leave me saying BUH? with a blank face.

Besides, at the end of the original Bomberman, wasn't he revealed to be Milon? Somehow I can't imagine bubble-blowing pajama boy wearing that sort of ultrabadass armor suit.

... Who?

The bubble-blowing pajama-wearing kid from Milon's Secret Castle, a bizarre platformer that I was addicted to way back in the day.

ALSO: That game was fucking hard.
Yes, it was, even if you knew to press left + start on the title screen to continue. You still had to find all the random secret entrances and be able to get through annoying levels with enough health to kill the boss. *shudders at the memory of the lightning tower* I got it over summer vacation when I was ten, and it took me four months to beat it. Other than a random Nintendo Power tip about the spring shoes and shrink potion - and a call to Hudson Soft because I didn't know that the third floor boss showed up once you collected Queen Eliza's schwag - I figured the game out myself. I was so proud.

One of my all-time favorites...Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The script is full of literary references, amusing lines, and subtle humor.

Willy Wonka - "A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men."

Mr. Turkentine - "I've just decided to switch our Friday schedule to Monday, which means that the test we take each Friday on what we learned during the week will now take place on Monday before we've learned it. But since today is Tuesday, it doesn't matter in the slightest."

Willy Wonka - "You should never, never doubt what nobody is sure about."

Frustrated programmer - "I am now telling the computer exactly what it can do with a lifetime supply of chocolate."

Speaking of Harry Potter again...

...as Severus Snape, Alan Rickman is like a super-hot cross between himself and Trent Reznor.

Posted on 02-23-06 06:21 PM, in Brokeback Mountain Link
Rando and I saw this on Tuesday night. I had expected it to be good. It blew me away. I have to say that it is one of the best films I have ever seen.

I've never come across a movie with an overall effect as powerful as this. Brokeback Mountain is an incredibly realistic and nuanced portrayal of forbidden, repressed love and the devastating toll it takes on everyone involved. I already knew that gay people did (and still do) enter into sham heterosexual marriages and bear children in order to hide and deny the truth about themselves, and I already knew that this was hell for the entire family, but Brokeback Mountain was able to give me an inkling of what this is actually like. It made me forget that I was watching actors - the acting really was that good, as was the faux aging of the two lead characters - and it deftly demonstrated the many layers of emotion and pain in the characters' lives. At first, I thought the movie was reasonably interesting and well-done, but at some point in the middle, the characters began to sink in. A certain pivotal scene involving a postcard and a phone call felt like a kick to the gut. At the end, I was a bawling mess, and I thought about the movie well into the next day.

Of the specific aspects of the movie, the music, dialogue, and acting struck me as particularly well-done. Most of the background music is part of a scene - for instance, a song playing on a jukebox. There is not much to the soundtrack other than occasional western-ish guitar chords that fit the mood and setting perfectly. The characters' dialogue is incredibly realistic in design and delivery. The well-known "I wish I knew how to quit you" line is the most Hollywood-ish line I remember, and I could still see an actual person spontaneously saying that. Due to the skill of the actors, all of the speech sounds like genuine conversation - complete with the hidden meanings and insinuations that are essential to the strength of this movie - and the ample silence of this film is not empty by any means. The actors convey many a thought and feeling via subtle gestures and facial expressions...just like actual people deathly afraid of how they might come across or doing their damndest to bottle up pain.

I also want to point out that, contrary to the misconceptions of some, this is certainly not a OMG!YaoiFangirlTeeheeKawaiiiii! movie. Not at all. It is about having to deny the love of your life and the very fabric of your being. It is painful to watch, but it is a very worthwhile experience.

It's a reference to the sort of fanservice that appeals to women who like seeing cute gay guys together. For example: lots of warm and fuzzy romance (including steamy sex scenes) and bare chests. Basically, scenes that would turn the aforementioned women into a squeeing pile of mush. Imagine a typical romantic movie with two men instead of a man and a woman. That's what some people think Brokeback Mountain is, and they think that much of its popularity comes from fans of Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal going all gaga to see two good-looking men be romantic and sexy together.

I completely agree. They could also be problematic if you focus on them to the extent of neglecting your existing relationship or if their very existence is annoying you ("I'm happy...why can't I get that person out of my head?"), but I don't think they're inherently wrong.

The beginning of the movie - before a pivotal scene inside a tent - really does not have much in the way of events or dialogue. It consists of scenes of the long, dull days of herding sheep, and it shows Jack and Ennis' developing friendship (and romantic interest). At first, they're two strangers in the same place, and they don't have much to say, but they gradually talk to each other more and even begin to open up about themselves. Some people think that this part moves too slowly. I thought the pace was generally OK, but I can see where they're coming from.

I've played Gex 2 and 3, and I had a great time with both. As I recall, 2 had better wisecracks, but the game engine and level design seemed more polished in 3. I'm pretty sure I finished both games, but I never did beat that evil superhero level at the end of 3. (Incidentally, I liked that it was an optional challenge. If you had already gotten enough remotes to activate the last level, you were good to go.)

This is a great idea. If they like the character style, they may be happy with a different character who looks similar, especially if it is a unique piece of work. I completely understand not wanting someone else to use what is essentially a self-portrait. I don't think I would grant rights to that, either.

I like pop and I like coffee, but coffee-flavored pop sounds disgusting to me. I just don't see cola and coffee as two flavors that would work together. I'll have to try the stuff once just to see, but I don't have very high hopes for it.

It chafes my ass that they pulled Vanilla Coke to make room for Blak. I do like Diet Black Cherry Vanilla (it tastes strangely like a pastry in a good way), but I used to drink mass quantities of plain vanilla (har har har) and I miss it. They still sell the lime-flavored Coke, which I've never tried, but Rando told me it's gross, so I'm sort of afraid of it. Then again, I actually liked Crystal Pepsi, so you never know.

That new Surge-like drink from Coke is pretty good, though. The calorie-free version tastes better than Diet Mountain Dew.

Posted on 03-04-06 12:00 AM, in Alcohol! Link
The drunkest I've ever been was when I went to a dorm room party and had five shots of Vladimir and two Zimas in about 1 1/2 hours. I was slurring my speech and missing frames from my vision. I watched somebody drop a bag of Doritos. One instant, they were on the guy's lap, and immediately thereafter, they were scattered all over the floor. One of the people walked me back to my dorm, and I managed to say hi to the RA like nothing was up, and then I proceeded to have the worst. Sobering up experience. Ever. Time slowed to a crawl, and I divided it between shivering curled up on my floor (I was afraid to go to bed in case I had to hork) and sitting on the toilet bent over (figuring that if I had to hork, that was the best place to be because I could just turn around and not worry about making a mess, but it wasn't quite the same as lying on the floor). There was a Stall Stories newsletter in the bathroom, and it was too blurry for me to read.

After maybe 3 hours (and no horkage, although I came close once), I drank an assload of water and Pepto-Bismol and went to bed. I woke up at 8ish having to whiz really badly. My bed smelled like beer from all the alcohol I'd sweated off, which highly amused me. I went back to bed and got up at around 1 feeling absolutely fine and clear-headed. Hooray for my 19-year-old metabolism. And I have NEVER been that drunk again. There was that time 1 1/2 years ago when I first went to the Rathskeller (a local bar known for its endearing "dive" atmosphere and $2 mixed drink happy hour) and had Randy drag me home and typed a very rambly LJ entry with tons of numbers in words that never had them originally, but I had spread out the alcohol and eaten first, so I wasn't miserable or anywhere near getting sick.
