Wait a sec. Do you really mean to say that the US government does not provide jobs? Last I checked, millions of people are employed by federal, state, and local government. Furthermore, not all businesses are empires run by the rich. According to 2001 tax statistics, 1.4 percent of small business owners with positive business income were taxed at the highest rate of 39.6 percent, and 2.3 percent were in the 36 percent bracket. Thus, increased taxes for the "rich" brackets would not affect the vast majority of small businesses in a negative way. (And I don't understand how they would affect the large "empire" companies, either, because I'd think that said companies would pay corporate tax on their revenue, which is a separate issue from the owner's income tax.)

I should have done this earlier.

FEW-WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!

*Rydain chucks a bottle labeled CHILL PILLS into the thread

Dear everyone:

Please present evidence and explain viewpoints instead of insulting those who you disagree with. If you would like to convince people that your opinion makes the most sense, sniping at them is not going to help at all. I would like to see a good exchange of different schools of thought on economics and government services, not a pointless snipefest, so let's keep it civil from here on out.

Ailure - The Super Bowl is the American football championship game. Funnily enough, we went out to dinner earlier today and the TV's at the restaurant were set to a bowling tournament.

So how did Rydain wind up actually giving a crap about the outcome of the Super Bowl?

In no particular order of importance:

a) I'm from Pittsburgh, so it would be cool if TEH STILLERS won. Just because.

b) A local fabric and yarn store had a promotion where you sign up and guess which team will win, and if you picked the winning team, you get 25% off the supplies needed for a project of your choice. I've been taking an interest in quilting and saving money is always good.

I remember when your custom title was "Fool with Blaster" and I was briefly involved in a Zelda game with you in the story forum, and "Blastie" was happy because I acknowledged his contribution. Or something like that.

Have both, use both, like both. I don't play mp3's on my cell phone or talk on my iPod, so I can't really pick one over the other.

23. Friends or family?
Both. My good friends are family to me.

24. Lip gloss or lip stick?
Lip gloss. (More like ChapStick for me, actually.)

27. Tank tops or beaters?
Beaters. They're one of my wardrobe staples. They're so simple, so durable, and so badass-looking.

For those who are using contraception...what do you use? Why did you choose it? How well does it work for you?

Rando and I used condoms for a while because they're available over the counter, cheap, and very reliable if used properly. They were a little awkward, but they never broke or otherwise failed. I wanted hormonal birth control because I hated my long, HEAVY, disgusting periods with cramps that sometimes had me curled up in bed snarfing Midol, and hormonal BC tends to decrease flow significantly. While researching options, I came across my holy grail of contraception - the Mirena IUD. It lasts five years, is statistically more effective than sterilization, and decreases period flow by up to 96%. I was afraid that I would have trouble finding a doctor to put one in for me, as I have not had children and many doctors are antsy about giving nulliparous women an IUD (for various reasons, many of which are overly cautious bullshit), but the first gynecologist I talked to approved me with no fuss at all. Insertion hurt like a bastage, and I had bend-over cramps for a couple of days afterward, but it was so well worth it. I have experienced the amazing period reduction (I seriously barely notice it's there - which is an almost unbelievable improvement from how crap it used to be) and I love not having to think about my contraception at all. It's just there and it works.

If I had not been able to get a Mirena, I would have gone for the NuvaRing instead. It has the "set it and forget it" advantage (you leave each ring in for three weeks), and it does help regulate periods.

I wound up going 94 mph by accident in my Chevy Cavalier while driving through West Virginia. The speed limit on the highways is 70, so I was of course driving that and then some, and I didn't realize how fast I was going until I noticed that I was coming up on the car ahead way too quickly.

As I recall, Willow was a pretty cool game. I played through most of it years ago, but I was a dumbass and went up to Bavmorda before leveling enough to damage her, and I hadn't saved in a while after having done a bunch of difficult stuff, so I got annoyed and never got around to beating the game. Blarg.

Yeah...and condoms are a hell of a lot cheaper than child support. People make no sense to me sometimes.

Anya, you're damn lucky that pulling out worked so well for you. I personally wouldn't trust it, but I guess it does work for some people...

Posted on 02-13-06 11:58 PM, in Have you ever modded a system? Link
I never have, but my husband did. Several times. He installed a mod chip in his old-style PSX. When that started to die, he transferred the chip to a PS One, adding a switch on the front. It was an ugly mod (he burned a hole for the switch using the soldering iron ), but it worked. Our PS2 has a clear blue flip top case and a 100+ GB hard drive loaded with most of our favorite games (including the CD-based ones - like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 - that the system hates to read...not having to worry about spending 20 minutes trying to boot the damn game when friends come over is a very good thing indeed).

Our first GBA had a backlight, but I can't remember if Rando installed an Afterburner mod himself or if he bought it already modded.

Posted on 02-15-06 06:03 PM, in If you could change your name... Link
Rydain Darkstar is, essentially, a second name for me. I've been Rydain for 11 years, and it fits so well that none of the other handles I tried on can ever replace it. I would take it legally if I hated my birth name. But I don't. My birth name is different and rather elegant and it flows, and it fits me. It would be spiffy to have Rydain as a legal alias, but I don't think you can do that.

One of my friends went through with a name change not too long ago. He had to make an announcement in the paper (I forget exactly why, but it was a requirement) and go before a judge. We had all been calling him by his chosen name for the past several years, so it didn't require any adjustment on our part.
