Well, next time try taking a peek at the Programming Experts directory thread (which should really be stickied). It seems that Jagori knows and can help with Haskell. | |||

(Gavin) get this: my new hard drive finally comes and I install it and get everything working
(Gavin) then I decide to take the time to update Ubuntu (Gavin) so I set up the new partitions and everything and I go to shave real quick while the system is installing. I come back and see that it's done with that and I have to set up the time and such (Gavin) I go to move the mouse, but no dice... apparently the system froze (Gavin) no big deal, linux has frozen my computer before (Gavin) restart (Gavin) NOTHING HAPPENS (Gavin) the BIOS doesn't even fucking load up (Gavin) no data is sent to the screen.. (Gavin) the fans are going and the power is on and shit, but nothing else No beeping, no screen display.. I unplugged the hard drives in case that would do anything (I'm a computer hardware retard) but of course it didn't. Hopefully the HDD's are okay. I don't know why they would also be fucked, but with my luck, I wouldn't be suprised. I feel like crying. This machine has served me greatly over the past ~three years... I honestly don't have that big of an attachment to the machine itself (although I made fun drawings on the case), it's just the though of having to spend the money that I sure as fuck don't have to replace it. Not to mentione the fact that I'm currently right in the middle of two website developement projects that I would have been working on at this exact moment in time if God didn't hate me. Although I spend a great deal of time on computers and with programming, I have always been extremely ignorant of computer hardware in general, so naturally this is nothing that I know how to deal with or assess. So what I would like to know is if anyone has any immediate thoughts as to the cause of the problem (which I would guess may not be easy assess without actually being at the system), and any suggestions as to where to go from here... I really need a computer pretty much immediatly, which sounds like it probably isn't possible for this particular machine. How much does it cost to get the computer analyzed by a professional? How fucked am I? Will they ever find WMD's or Jimmy Hoffa?? Game Fucking Over |

I disagree with Redrum and Xkeeper. I mean, why create public data at all if the data isn't free? In my opinion it seems somewhat egotistical to demand credit. After all, it's not like we're actually creating code or something new, just analyzing already existing code and data structures. Sooner or later somebody will have been able to come around and repeat the data, this just saves them time. Where works should be respected and credited are in the hacks themselves.
I have spent a hell of a lot of time hacking and debugging FF1 and my works means a lot to me. However I don't have any illusions that the skills I learned enabling me to find the pieces of data that I have in my notes aren't in some way related to previous advances in the scene. Whether it's somebody else's comments on a routine, a RAM location that saves me a day of work, the actual tools I use to do complex ROM inspection, or the people that helped me along when I was learning romhacking and disassembling. "If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.", as they say. In that way, it is my own personal belief that all information should be free for this particular hobby. Because almost every romhacker has, at some point, gotten the aid of another scene member for free, I see it as a way to give back without being all crybaby about it. |

Originally posted by bluerum not really. if you want to make friends and talk to someone then sure, it might defeat some of that, but I don't romhack beacuse I want to start a dialogue with someone. And forgive me, but I never quite saw what the point of "community" was anyway, at least in the sense that I hear people talk about it. I romhack first and foremost because I am interesting in reverse engineering video games. And I'm very confident that the community could exist and work extremely well without knowing where the information came from. Just imagine a mini-scenario in your head: pretend the whole board was posting under the username "guest", as on phpBB boards, and somebody posts a romhacking question. Would you not respond because you didn't have a username? So again, no, that does not hold true if your intentions are to romhack; exchange data and routine comments; RAM locations; other techniques and tips. If you want to have a chat with someone on the internet, then sure, it might Originally posted by bluerum Again: not really. I see a distinction between creative works and reverse-engineering. Reverse engineering is simply uncovering what is already there. Anybody can do it, and when you do it, the results are in no way unique. I agree that romhacks, as creative derivations of original works should be credited. The true test of a romhacker is what they can do with the data...whatever wild and inspiring narratives, levels, sprites (whatver that romhacker is working on) that hacker comes up with... that's the whole point of romhacking. I also fail to see how not being credited for something makes the work "all for naught". If you romhack to be acknowledged, to get respect or something, then I guess it would be. But I was under the impression that romhacks were personal works... I mean I debug FF1 out of a general curiosity. The joy I get in discovering the purpose of a new routine, tweaking some aspect of the game is very real, and not something I do to start up a conversation. Sharing can be fun I guess, but only if they are in a position to understand and appreciate the work. Which is again, a creative endeavor separate from simply identifying code/data, IMO. That said, it's not for me to tell you exactly how you should and shouldn't feel about romhacking or what it should mean to you. If you romhack because X reason, and just feel that it's polite and appropriate for people to site sources or whatever... then by all means. I wasn't trying to be a prick in this thread, just posting my random inane musings about the situation and offering my personal perspective on romhacking.. |

Wow, what the hell is wrong with you people? You're using broken relics. Seriously.
Originally posted by Dragonsbrethren This is probably one of the best, and if FCEUXD didn't have an inline hex editor I would still be using it. However not having to reload the rom to see ROM hex changes? Mother-fucking pricesless . Too bad it's not so nice on MTE, so I reverted back to WindHex for the Grand Master translation |

Very cool stuff. This remnids me of a document (link) I saw a long long time ago by "Peekin", who seems to have not been active for quite a while. Anyway, he had a tileviewing program and was poking around in games and found some DKC level data. His explination is as follows.
Donkey Kong Country Just thought I would add that in case if helps clarify for anyone. Anyway, I'd be very interested to see the results of someone fiddling with DKC edit: heh, I was just messing with changing around a few things in the first level. Pretty badass, I must say. this list is barely even worth mentioning, I just started it two seconds ago. it fucking sucks, but maybe someone will add to it... or if I un-lazy-ify myself, I might try go get all the bytes. or unless they're already in the documentation from this thread and my illiterate self didn't see it. I would probably be interested in helping... don't let my current performance and track-record on Zophar's Domain staff speak for my normal performance... obviously that place is a shithole, and Sam is the most un-motivating person to post news for. Ever. . Posting romhacking related news is basically the only reason I wanted to be on ZD staff to begin with, although swamp didn't seem to go with the ideas to rennovate/clense the hack section and divide it into some kind of cohesive page.
I've been interested in romhacking news for quite a while, and as some might remember basically set out to make your romhacking.net, but projects and school get in the way... the system is still in developement, as I think I stated when I contacted you some weeks/months ago. |

I'm currently working on learning as much as I can as fast as I can. Seeking out any advantage I can get my hands on to get hypothetically, "ahead of the game", mentally. In the next few years I hope to balance out and fill many areas I am lacking in terms of knowledge with respect to programming, politics, and especially business. Although I'm not a business man by nature, I realize it is an absolute necessity to do the things I want in life.
I hope to start my own real business (I don't count my current web design side-business as I'm still in school and I don't work it like a real job..) within the next 4 years, and to start and sell at least 3 companies for hopefully large sums of cash by the time I'm 35. Sounds ridiculous, I'm sure... but check back in 15 years.. Although I program now, I don't see myself as a career developer.. I have no specific goals and I don't envision a grandious lifestyle. Just enough to be comfortable, possibly in the city. I would really love to make my way to some place like Portland, Oregon. If I could move there within the next decade (realistic, I would say) I would be extremely happy. I will always continue learning, designing, introspecting, and most of all... enjoying whatever I do, because that's the point of life. |

Originally posted by Xeogred haha, boy did I ever see that coming. IMO the movie looked absolutely horrid, not to mention it was a complete bastardization of Aeon Flux. It captured none of the style, none of the sexyness... just nothing about it was "Aeon Flux", and it's disgusting what they have done to it. Have I seen the movie? Fuck no. I know all this just from the prevews. And thankfully I'll never have to see this movie, which is probably going to end up just as shitty as the game they're making based on the movie. |

And not that anyone under some certain age is incapable of mounting a good argument (and I'm sure there are many 15 and 16 year olds much more capable and articulate than many my own age), it's just that they (and anyone else saying anything rational) are overridden by the rest of the garbage. But actually, to answer the question: No, of course not. That question is just fucking absurd. Science is, as one definition puts it: "Methodological activity, discipline, or study". Science isn't some ubiquitous, tangible entity. It is simply fact building and discovering the in which we live. |

Originally posted by SilvershieldOriginally posted by emceeEven as the generally moral person that I'd consider myself to be, I cannot bring myself to entirely reject the notion of torture. Surely it is nothing short of inhumane when used as a method of punishment, but can you not imagine a circumstance where it would somehow be justified? It is appalling to be forced to think that way, but we must all consider, for example, a case where a person holds information that can save the lives of many. Is that person's well-being - not even his life, mind you, just his safety from torture - not justifiably sacrificed? Torture is Torture. Torture == Torture. Torture + Torture + Torture = Torture There is no justification, and it is supposed to be the very thing that sets us apart. It is a ridiculous hypocrisy and I agree with Silvershield.. it's just disgusting that they fight such legistlation. If we allow torture in some circumstances we compromise our moral integrity and have no authority whatsoever to condescend to other entities about such issues. |
