SA1 and 2 were never all that horrible, however due to later games and their poor comparison to even other Mario games, they tend to rank poorly (but respectably) to me. The problem is that if bad games come out, nobody will buy them anymore. The recent one bombed in the US, so it's a matter of time before PAL is next if this next game sucks.

The main problems with SA had to do with the camera angles and all that. Then other problems crept up.

I was actually pretty happy with Sonic Advance 2 and 3 and Sonic Battle. But see that was a couple of years ago too.

I wouldn't mind seeing a follow up in that same regard that overcame that.

Sonic Rush is supposed to be good too but people who've played it can vouch I suppose.

Maybe the only way Sonic games can be good anymore is if they're in 2D? I dunno. :\ I doubt we'll see too many more games in that vein though.

Thank you! I also greatly enjoyed Sonic Battle. Emerl was the main reason I enjoyed it, and I'd love to see a Super Smash Bros. caliber game to follow up on the formula that they had.

Well the tie-in between Battle to Advance 3, I thought, was really good. It at least had some sort of relation to games that was moreso than most for Sonic games. Even if it was really subtle.

Hahaha, Final Zone did have a dark remix of Holly Summit. That ruled.

In all fairness, though, Sonic Advance 3 sucked. It even managed to suck though it had a computer/data themed level, which is really stunning when you think about it. The special stages, instead of the wonderful little encounters you bumped into in Sonic 2, are stupid, tedious tasks. That was the only time I ever cheated in a Game Boy game. I'm not going to spend hours gathering up those fuckers just so I can face a lackluster 'secret' boss.

Even Robotnik wasn't fun in that game. 2 had those chase levels which, if somewhat broken and pushed you back to the start all the time, were interesting and kinda cool. 3 didn't have a single worthwhile Egg Machine.

Sonic battle failed less, but it had ridiculous dialogue and the battle system would eat you up and spit you out if you fought fairly. If you had a system like alternating between bombs and specials each KO and just letting the enemy follow you around getting themselves killed though, it was painfully easy to take down anyone at all. The Phi battles got real old real fast, too.

Actually, I agree. I was more impressed with Sonic Advance 2. Although I was impressed with the music tracks in all of them, basing it on the fact that they were all through the GBA engine.

Beating up the secret boss in 2 was a lot fscking harder than the piss poor one that was in 3. Least the EX Boss theme was a cool redo of Emerl's theme.

It's all about money now- Sega knows that they can sell the current Sonic games, Sonic Genesis, Sonic 360, etc.; and people will still buy them. As long as they've got money, they don't care if the game is actually not that good- people will still buy the sequal anyway, because it's a Sonic game. Just like how Nintendo gets away with releasing very few new side-scrolling Mario games when it can make quick remakes and sports games.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that understands this.

Companies undestand also that they are selling based on their reputation, adn that they are infact ruining their reputation, therefore losing money in the long run.

Sonic Battle was a terrible game, once you figured out the pattern you could beat any character with no problem.

Sonic Advances, I really could not get into any of them. The special stages were the worst I've ever played. Sonic Advance 2 wasn't bad, but generally, they're nothing.

Sonic is now a small, insignificant corner of the market. Alienating its current fans (mostly people like you (tm) and children) isn't going to hurt business in any meaningful way

Toupee!

Honestly, that only goes skin deep into the game itself. I'll admit that Sonic Battle didn't really deliver too much in Story Mode (in fact I put it down for a year before I beat it) but the concept of being able to get every move from every character and then some deserves some sort of praise. And I still say the music wins even considering the engine.

Not really. The fact that it required tools to make a speedrun that fits the description would seem to support the idea that it is impossible to do.

I think that, Hiryuu, you suffer from the distortion of nostaliga. We only remember those fucking awesome core games that stand out. We only remember the really, really, really, really bad games. Right now we're bombarded by games on an unforeseen scale. That doesn't change the fact that for every good game 7 god awful pieces of shitware are produced by the giant industry anus. It happened with Atari. It happened with Genesis and SNES. It happens today. It will happen when video games are controlled by twitches in your tongue. (HEY NINTENDO BRIDGE THE GAP. MY TONGUE DOESN'T PLAY THE GAME. CHANGE IT)

Bullshit. I was still a kid when, say, the N64 came out and that didn't make the system any better. Compare all the good games that came out for the Genesis, SNES, and NES with all the good games there were for the last couple of generations: GameCube, PS2, and XBox and before it the Playstation, N64, and Dreamcast.

why hallo thar discrepancy

I agree, we had so many classics released back then like Aerosmith's Revolution X and Barney's Hide and Seek!

I personally beleive that Sega's nail in the coffin began with the damn phrase that made me shudder when I heard it. I quote from Sonic Heroes "Lets show this guy the true super power of team work!" Uhhhhhhhh...

Hey, there's been great games with horrid translations/voice work before.

Look at Dragon Warrior's translation... thankfully they dropped Ye Olde English fast.

Hmm, here's what I've seen ...

- Sonic Adventure -- This game was okay and really "cool "at the time of its release (when we drooled over the Dreamcast), but it still failed in comparison to previous Sonic games.
- Sonic Adventure 2 -- I hated it.
- Sonic Advance games -- Couldn't bare to get into them at all.
- Sonic DS -- I hated it.
- Sonic Genesis from what I've heard all over the forum here, I'm never going to play this. Ever.
- Sonic Heroes - Didn't care to play it.
- New Sonic - Its the Adventure games, all over! Yay! .............

Not to mention ...

Yeah, surprised me nobody mentioned that piece of rotten garbage yet. There's a secondary character that didn't deserve his own game, at all.

Although I can agree that the Sonic game for the Wii looks pretty awesome, following the pattern here ... its already sitting on thin ice for me. If its terrible, I won't be surprised or disappointed at all. But, it'll be cool if its actually good.

But yeah, Sonic the Hedgehog 1-3 + Knuckles, and CD, were absolutely amazing.

How was Adventure 2 bad? I know it's not as good as the classics, but it was pretty decent!

Yeah, I agree, Adventure 2 was a great improvement over Adventure. Tails and Eggman's levels were like Gamma's levels with less clunky platforming and no stupid combo-for-time system, Knuckles and Rouge's levels were Knuckles' levels with better stage design, and Sonic and Shadow's levels were.. well, much like Sonic's levels, but they were good already. Then they did away with Tails' levels (wow, we can play Sonic's levels over again, but this time we can fly over everything - oh, and there's now a time limit. Fun. No, wait), Amy's levels (slow and dull) and Big's level (fucking retarded), as well as that stupid overworld that never told you where to go.

While it's true that Soic is supposed to be about speed, having "zoom around the level looking for stuff with a radar" and "stomp around blowing shit up" doesn't clash with that idea THAT much - at least they allow for rather fast forward movement, unlike "slow ass platforming" and "sitting on your ass fishing".
