May I, out of sheer curiosity, ask what reasons led you to pick Roman Catholicism out of all the Christian sects out there? And don't say it's because of your family. For such a grave decision, you must have had a better reason than that.

I suppose this would be the wrong place to ask "Why not Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, etc...?"

I actually wondered that myself the first time I saw the thread. Vyper, is there any reason you chose Catholicism in particular?

Also wondering how exactly it allows him to be closer to god...

I mean, you already believe that you would have gone to heaven or something when dying as a Christian of some other sort, what exactly does changing to Catholicism do to help that?

I'm going for the traditional roman-catholic religion. The one originally started by Jesus himself.

I've chosen roman-catholicism of the traditional type because of the fact it is the original Christian religion.

I will be closer to God. I will be able to further repent for my sins and give thanks for the spiritual guidance God and his son, Jesus, have given me. I truly believe I will become a better person through the teachings of Christ.

Might I ask what effected this change in your life? Since I always thought "being closer to God" meant a change in one's lifestyle, doing something for one's fellow human and all. Not changing religions. Although, if through your newfound religion you can achieve your calling better, then best of luck with that.

It was mostly caused by a lot of introversion and thinking from the time I broke up with my ex-girlfriend and about a month ago.

I spent a lot of time to myself and didn't really do much of anything (other than work of course ).

Recently, I've been getting my life back on track and I want to lead a more accomplished life. I'm not going to fail again, you see.

What exactly about Roman Catholicism was "founded by Jesus" though, or makes it "the original christian faith"? After the death of Jesus, Christianity pretty much broke apart and scattered in all directions; with that, one might argue, the "original christian religion" was lost. The Roman Catholic church was essentially "founded" by the Council of Nicaea, or Emperor Constantine, whichever you prefer. At least, that's the point at which most of the Catholic interpretation of the bible emerged.

It was mentioned quite often during this thread. =/

There is no such thing as "the Christian Church." Each one is a different flavor of ice cream.

All part of something whole. I was, as you say, scratching the surface.

Eh, if you want to go into deeper detail, that's your choice.

I'm part of the Church of Christ. My religion is based on the get baptised, stay faithful, or you go to hell.

And, going through the Bible, I think 99% of all men will not go to heaven.

Exactly my thoughts, Riku.

I want to assure myself that I'll be part of the 1% who do make it to Heaven.

I think that's a pretty pessimistic take on things. The fire and brimstone philosophy bothers me - Christianity is about man, who is inherently and unavoidably flawed, having the infinite opportunity to seek forgiveness, not about that flawed species being damned without recourse.

The 1% thing doesn't make sense to me. My logical objections to it are pretty simple, though; I believe we already live in hell and that there's torture enough here, nothing they could make up there could make up for the limited lifespan and bad things that go on here. Seriously, are you going into Catholacism because you believe if you don't you'll be burnt up and torn apart for being moral, but a different faith?

The views of God I've seen don't seem to really pick favorites. I have a lingering suspicion true morality shows through what religion you are, and that if there is one, then he'd most likely accept people as long as they did not intentionally attempt vile, evil things. I'd suggest you read the bible completely, too--several portions of it have a variety of viewpoints, and I consider Christianity to be a very, very varied religion. If you are going to convert to another sect, I'd suggest finding spiritual reasons rather than fear. As the whole Star Wars cliche, fear leads to hate, hate leads to anger, anger to suffering, etc. It could actually be bad for you to act on fear alone, is what I'm saying.

It's not that I'm saying we're all without hope, it's more leaning towards this direction.

-Those who know not about him.
-Those who reject this, because they are strongly wrapped in another religion.
-Those who stray and don't make any effort or show no care towards the religion as a whole.
-Those who follow, yet don't get baptised for the forgiveness of sins.
-Those who get baptised and stray forever away and make no effort to return.

Large portions of the world will not accept the word and will be damned for it.

Are you prepared to:

1. Accept everything the Pope says as God-given truth
2. Be against abortion
3. Never use any sort of birth control
4. Accept evolution as truth (see 1 and a statement by JPII)

Ummm, apophis, the papal infallibility doesn't mean the pope is right on EVERYTHING. That's a common misconception.

Also, birth control and abortion are relative matters within the Church. Abortion is a harder line stance, which is acceptable, even if I don't agree. But, birth control is contentious and highly debated issue. It is accepted with a wink in a nudge amongst many within the Church.

If you're determined to be Catholic, atleast be a good one and do your homework then.

Read up on the sacred traditions, make sure your keeping up with your sacred scripture (i.e., the Bible), read yourself some theology, such as the Summa Theologica by Saint Thomas Aquinas

Or just take the RCIA which is the basic initiation. And then you can get into theology. Make sure you understand the basics before jumping into the deep end of the confusion pool.

The issue is, the Bible tends to be contradictory in many respects, and so an individual passage might be directly opposed by a passage somewhere else in the book. I mean, there are plenty of "qualifications" that are provided regarding what a person needs to do to go to Heaven, and then Jesus comes along and says something along the lines of "be kind to your fellow man and lead a good life, and you will be saved." Which kind of throws a wrench in things.

Well, I'm against abortion as it is. I don't plan on having sex anytime in the near future so I'm good there. No, I will not accept Evolution as being truth, and no, the Pope is not always right.

Yes, tommathy, I am definitely going to be doing my homework on this. I fully intend to understand that which I wish to become.
