I've decided to convert to Catholicism for sake of my future and soul.

Questions? Comments? Concerns?

I have converted from FAT32 to NTFS for sake of my data's future and integrity.

Do you want to comment on that too? I mean, sure, it's an important conversion, but not to the large peanut gallery which is currently looking at your topic and shrugging.

I'm sure there are lots of other groups who think you're going to hell whom you didn't even give the time of day.

Have fun. When are you doing the RCIA? Also, are you sticking with mainline Catholicism or are you going to the Charismatic strain? There is a lot about the faith that people coming in don't know about that could scare them. Heck, even if you grow up your whole life as a Catholic you'll always be confronted with something new every once in a while.

Just make sure you're doing it for the right reasons. That is, avoid the whole Pascal's Wager thing.

Yeah, there is that too.

Even though I'm on my way out, I'll still have a certain love for Catholicism. It can be a delightfully wacky religion. It has some very eccentric bits. Make sure your priest is a Jesuit and bug him about hagiography. Them stories always got me through the days a lot. St. Odo of Cluny or St. Ammon of Egypt. Great fun.

Oh, I've been a Christian my entire life. I've just never practiced Catholicism. I've recently decided to start doing so. I've gotten to the point in my life when I believe I need saving. And I've found my savior once more.

No. I'm going for traditional Catholicism.

EDIT:
Ziff: I'm going to talk to a priest in the next week or so. I'm going to find out about catechism classes very soon.

Hmm, I think this thread can do better elsewhere. Maybe the Officer's Club?

EDIT: Also changed thread's name to be more appropriate to the topic.

"You need saving" so converting from Christianity to Catholicism is going to do that for you?

Yes, Danielle.

I'm scared of being without God. I'm afraid of going to hell. I need to repent and lead a life worthy of allowing me into Heaven.

I really want to be closer to God, and what better way?

I'm kind of lost with Danielle here. I'm not seeing why you're choosing Catholicism over Christianity? I mean its not like I favor Christianity more or anything, but ... what you just said above, could be said for Christians / Christianity too.

I'm guessing maybe you're more interested in their practices, or whatnot?

Yeah... my confusion isn't the "I need saving" part, it's why you feel you have to switch religions to feel saved.

But I'm sure I'm being less than understanding with your situation, as I'm pretty intolerable of religion being put on such a pedestal.

It was mentioned quite often during this thread. =/

I'm with the Christian church, and I've wondered how anyone can switch religions and your family be alright with that. I mean, if I switched religions, my grandma would try to set me on fire. How'd your family take the switching? Negative or positive?

Eh. Your choice is your choice.

By the way, I've found living a pure and faithful life a fragile thing. If everything in the bible shall happen, I'm going to hell. Heh.

I suppose I'll care when I'm older. Or not. Either way. Meh.

He hasn't really said what denomination he was prior, if any denomination at all. There is no such thing as "the Christian Church." Each one is a different flavor of ice cream.

And yeah, I don't see why you reach the conclusion that Catholicism is the best denomination to be saved. You may want to look into becoming a born again Christian if that is what you desire.

Well given that Catholicism is Christianity and vice versa its not really a big switch in religions. Its not even really a conversion.

But, MoN, you're overlooking the interdenominational Pentecostal and Charismatic movements that pretty much have a good hold on Christianity in the US. So, it doesn't matter what denomination he was. A lot of Christians just move between congregations for a variety of reasons, ranging from theological, social, political, or otherwise.

And I don't see why you reach the conclusion that born again Protestantism is the saving grace of graceful salvation. The logical extension of the argument is actually that Catholicism, due to the facts of absolution of sin and various other conditions found within the laws behind the Church's ideological drive, would be the same way to heaven. I mean, at least the Catholic faith, over and above the protestant denominations that seem to spread like wildfire these days, accepts that there are multiple paths to God, although the one true path in the end of it all is the Catholic Church. It just becomes a bit easier to accept it all when you're facing up to the almighty after you've kicked the bucket if you've lived the life of accepting the fact that the Papacy and all the aspects of the Church were the true way. I suppose though that the historical anti-Catholic sentiment that permeates Puritanical rooted American culture seeps into the conceptualization of Catholicism as its own religion apart the whole world of Christianity. I mean, look at Riku's post "I'm with the Christian church, and I've wondered how anyone can switch religions and your family be alright with that. I mean, if I switched religions, my grandma would try to set me on fire." Aside from the hilarious fact that conversion to Catholicism in the early days of the faith meant being burned at the stake by the presumed matriarch of your good Roman family...

Mind you, the whole Christianity v Catholicism debate has me lolling unbelievably hard.

Although on an incidental note I'm on my way out of this whole Catholic deal. Certain faiths just aren't for certain people.

ok... this is something that always annoys me. i HATE how people are scared to converting. i understand why some people are religious, but it's so damn selfish to see it as "i'm afraid of going to hell." it's just wrong to me, i suppose.
i'm mostly just pissed off at how god is always portrayed as a bastard, at least.

Again I cite Pascal's Wager, which is essentially a probability theory application of belief or non-belief in God. It says, basically, that you're universally better off believing in God after weighing all possible outcomes:

1. You believe in God, and He does not exist. No harm done.
2. You believe in God, and He does exist. No harm done.
3. You do not believe in God, and He does not exist. No harm done.
4. You do not believe in God, and He does exist. Harm done.

So, the only choice that has a bad outcome is one in which you do not believe in God, so you're better off believing in Him - whether He exists or not, you still win (or at least you don't lose).

Of course, it's a logical fallacy, which is why converting to or believing in a religion just so that you don't "go to Hell" is generally a poor choice.

I'm not converting because I'm afraid to go to hell. I'm converting because I wish to be closer to God. I've been generally free-protestant Christian my entire life but I've never really practiced. In order to be at peace with my soul, I've decided to begin practicing.

As for family? The majority is roman-catholic already so they welcome the change.
