Should there be a seperate Solo/Creative Write forum alongside of the Modern Art Forum?

I said yes, I don't care if it winds up being a minor forum... it's just the fact that modern art dosen't really fit to stories and stuff.

Now, for my opinion. Another board I visit with considerably less activity than this one also has seperate writing, art, RP, and simbattle forums, and each of them remains pretty active, with all having at least one post in the last three days (and all but story have had one in the last 24 hours. Also keep in mind our Tournament forum being postless for four days, and Femine's for three) The board also has fewer members.

So no, I don't think it'll fail as badly as some of you are predicting, and if it does, so fucking what? It's not that hard to nuke a forum and move all of its threads back to Modern Art.

I voted yes. I used to post my poetry here but never got feedback, so I just stopped posting it altogether. Although a Writing Forum may never be as active as the Modern Art Forum, at least a thread about someones poem won't get lost under a massive amount of sprite comics and lens flare.

Well, I don't exactly see why not. Along with putting poetry and prose and other things that can be read, we could also share work given to us by higher superiorities.

This one time, in my English class, we were given a task to create a prequel to a story we had just read. Some people were disgusted, some were fine, and the remainder liked the idea. I didn't really care at first, but when I started writing, I got ideas for what next, and did them. I got full grade (100%) for it.

Ok, so I'm still in 10th grade, but my teacher did like it. If a forum for writing did open with this allowed, then I would do that. Umm...if I could remember where it is, I'm sure it's in the house somewhere...

Anyways, I vote yes.

That'd actually be pretty damn cool. I have a few things I throw together when I'm bored that I'd honestly like some feed-back on time-to-time. I'm sure someone also has an interesting story they'd like to share that well, will be pretty damn cool.

I vote yes. There have been a couple times I've written stuff, only to not post it because there wasn't really a forum that seemed right for that, and the one time I did post a story, it got 0 replies. I think that if there had been a forum for solo writes then there would have been feedback given.

I'm all for a writing forum, considering that I have a few stories/fanfics in the back burner, and that the Story forum we currently have is only for multiplayer roleplaying stories, and MA focuses more on the visual arts, so they would feel out of place in either one.

Absolutely not. It wouldn't get enough use and would end up folded back into another forum anyway. I've seen that happen to many forums in the years I've been here. I feel it would be better to change the name and/or description of this forum to reflect that it is for writing as well as (visual) art.

To be frank, it's not like the forum could possibly be any more spam-saturated than many of the forums that already exist. I mean, even a thread that is the least bit relevant to this new forum's theme would inherently hold more value than the typical thread in Craziness, for example.

Craziness is meant to be silly. =\

What I'm more concerned about is people using this forum as a serious outlet for their writing, only to have their thread be overlooked by another person's "ONE WORD STORY" or "THE TALES OF SPONGEBOB AND KIRBY: SECRET LOVERS" story. You know?

Does anyone think that'd be hilarious and not so creepy if done right? GOOD IDEA BRA

Oh, to everyone who thinks this would be a lot of work for me andI wouldn't be bothered (see also: Big Topics, Modern Art icons):

The amount of work involved (saving 20 images, uploading them, then specially designating one forum to use them; moving all threads out of a forum, closing them, then updating the forum count properly) is a lot less than you think (insert a new row).

I think that's huge. If you really don't mind the work, and it wouldn't bother you to close it if it doesn't work, then there's nothing wrong with the idea. Every response to the contrary either cites 1. Extra work that you'd have or 2. Some kind of assumption that it will fail, both of which are pretty much invalid reasons now. Again, to those against, just because YOU think it'll fail, and you've seen things to indicate it will, doesn't mean it won't work here. And it certainly won't work if it is never given a chance. The poll isn't about "Do you think the new forum would fail? Y/N" it's "Should we try this new forum out?" which I have yet to see a good "No" reason for.

There hasn't been one yet.

The only ones that I've seen that have any kind of merit are the people that say the forum won't be used or that they wouldn't use it themselves.

Well that's kinda weird. I don't use the ROM Hacking forum (except for very occasional browsing) and I don't think it should be killed. People use the forum, so why not give this a shot.

Think we'll get this under way soon unless there's a decent/strong objection to do otherwise. Maybe this might get me some motivation to get my own write project worked on and even finished up.

I think my post was misunderstood, but then again, it was really ambiguous. I meant, well... here's a list of various amounts of work I'd end up doing to...

Add the Modern Art icons:
- Save all individual images (should upgrade Opera to make this less annoying, as right now it pops up the Transfers window each time... sometimes useful, often not)
- Upload them all, probably renaming them
- Add them to the global "forum icons" list
* And/Or make Modern Art alone use them, strictly for that forum (and leave all the usual ones off the list), which would be most of the work

Close Big Topics:
- Move all threads out (one query)
- Close all threads in Trash (one query)
- Update the forum/post count (one-four queries depending on complication level, or a pre-written script if I still have it)

Add this forum:
- Add one row to the database

It's a lot less work than people seem to think

There are a lot of other minor things to consider, though:
- A good name/description for it
- Where to put it
- Wether or not to put SF, SB, and this into the "Art" category and just move Entertainment/Sports elsewhere entirely
- A few other things

Generally, nothing mind blowing, but I do smell a bit of overall forum maintainence. I'm considering (re)moving the Announcements forum and intertwining it with the actual Announcements feature, though.

1) I nominate the name "The Pen is Mightier"

2) Put it in Art & Entertainment, right below Modern Art.

3) I think it's fine to leave Entertainment & Sports where it is. I've got no problem with moving SF and SB, but I do suggest putting them below the new writing forum so people will see it first. We haven't gotten many people posting writings in the SF by accident in a long while, but it's still good to take precautions against it.

Wouldn't something like "Writer's Block" work for a name?

FAILURE

I go that name that JD's going for less someone has a better name in mind.

EDIT: Additionally, I need to know the aspects that this new forum will be able to carry. Obviously, it'll be for displaying writing and ideas for writing and possibly discussion about write styles and whatnot.

My question is should it do anything past that? Novels already written (like bestsellers and whatever) and discussion about book material? Anything else that could be construed as creative writing? What kind of limit would we be setting here?

Discussion about book material is already in Entertainment, but I don't see why you can't talk about other books in it as well. It could be good for that.

Well, fanfiction should be able to be contributed as well. I don't write it, but my sister does Harry Potter fanfiction and she gets pissed with the sites she finds because they won't accept her stories for not being of the right "calibur" as the staffs' works. So fanfiction should be accepted as long as it is... good and legible (Spongebob and Kirby would be... interesting to see, but I'd rather see something like GIR and Ed. XD ).

Also, for comments, I would hope that we don't have comments that just range from either "Good story, keep it up" or "It sucks. Quit writing." I'd like to see a rule with "constructive criticism" being a big role in comments.

So... yeah, that's what I think...
