In case you hadn't noticed, I've started a new hack, this time with SMB3 GFX. (So let me go ahead and say... Thanks for the GFX, Pac.) I'm utilizing ExGFX as much as I can, and Extended Animation Frames is REALLY helping. This hack is packed with custom blocks. I've gone overboard, though. Here's a peek at some of the custom blocks you can expect:

-SMB3 Pipes by MikeyK
-Smashable Brick (only because I didn't like BMF's blocks breaking with a spin jump. They're still in the hack, though. )
-P-Switch Hold Block
-Silver P-Switch Hold Block
-Reverse P-Switch Only Block
-P-Switch Only Block
-P-Switch Block
-Silver P-Switch Block
-Mario Block
-Luigi Block
-Locked Door Key Blocks
-Locked Doors
-Movement Down blocks (for SMB3 waterfalls)
-Wrap-Around Blocks
-Teleport Blocks
-All Frozen Blocks
-Invisible Midway Point Block
-Many more!

Yep, I plan on switching between Mario and Luigi on the fly... in later levels. For now, they're a big no-no. However, to counteract the whole status bar change, I've taken out the character counter. Instead, it simply has a big yellow "LIVES" there. I'd use SWR's fix, but... It makes it impossible to react to the Mario-Only and Luigi-Only blocks. I even have a fun puzzle set up in the first level that uses a Movement Down Medium Block, a Locked Door Key 4 block (I made it a Blue Key, and the Locked Door has a big Blue Keyhole on it. Hey, Blue is my favorite color. ), and a P-Switch Block (I refuse to call the switch a POW Switch. It doesn't do what the POW Block does, and it doesn't say "POW" on the switch- It says "P".). Hit both blocks without falling into the bottomless pit, get out of the current, race to the Locked Door, jump over P-Blocks (Blocks with a P on them that become solid after activating a P-Switch), and duck under some Locked Door Init. Blocks. Sound fun? =) It shouldn't be- The current is too fast. Oh yeah, I'll still work on my previous hack. (Just so you know, I have a name for it- Super Mario World: The Secret of the Blueberry Sea. The Blueberry Sea is World 4, by the way. ) I just can't work on two things at one time. XD So far, I have no idea for a story, and I'm not even finalizing the name yet. I had an idea to make all the worlds Pipe based, each with its own colors. World 1 is Silver Pipeline. Because it's a Pipe world, each inch of solid ground is... PIPES! And what color would they be besides... SILVER? XD Part 2 of Silver Pipeline 1 has those cool SMB3 Pipes by MikeyK, and plenty of... WATERFALLS!!! Yep. There's a leak in the pipes. Who else but Mario is there to fix them? However, Silver Pipeline isn't just pipe levels. Oh no, there's also 3 water levels, and a castle that has NOTHING TO DO WITH PIPES, except maybe for a few SMB3 scrolling pipes. =)

SCREENS?!?! OMG:

Mario, a Buzzy Beetle, and a Chuck. Boring. ...This level is actually packed with Piranha Plants. Why? Because they love to live.... in pipes... (Yes, I took that from PM:TTYD. WHO CARES?) But wait! That's not all! There's also...

...Goombas! And Bullet Bill shooters! You know you love 'em! =)

DID THAT PIPE JUST FIRE A BULLET BILL?!?!
Yes, I placed a Bullet Bill shooter sprite RIGHT THERE ON THAT PIPE. I did it because I can. That, and I though it looked cool.

It's time for another exciting roudn of...

WHEEEEEEERE'S MARIO? XD

...Boring. I need to get some shots of the REAL action. Oh, if you look closely in that last shot, you'll see something important. Could it be... THE BRICK?!?! No, not the brick....

More screenies to come! ...After I can stop getting killed by my own creation.

XD Cookie to those who can correctly guess what the level's all about.

Just drifting by...

Looks like an awsome idea. Just so you know, Spellwerdzrite made a second fix to that Mario-Luigi Block status bar/block problem. He was suppose to post the new fix at SMW central, but by the looks of it he never got around to it. You can get the new download here: http://www.geocities.com/spel_werdz_rite/Luigi.zip

OK, so, screenshots...

  1. Nice graphics, but the background isn't great. You should consider adding more pipes further in the background.
  2. Nothing great, though the SMB3 blocks look nice against the silver background.
  3. Meh.
  4. I'm guessing those blue dotted lines are the "something important"?

BTW, if the entire game is pipe themed, the castle oughta have something to do with pipes. Even if there's just a lot of them around.

Well, it looks okay, but is the whole game gonna be pipe themed? A world maybe, but too much of the same thing gets old. Variety is needed, y'know?

Also, I would say ditch the Super Mario Bros. 3 graphics. It has a different art style than Super Mario World, and when you bring them together, they don't always "fit". For example, that Chargin' Chuck clashes with your Mario. You'll either have to go all one way or another...

Well, like I said, I haven't decided on that yet. But even though, World 1 IS pipe-themed, so I guess I should base it around finding the right pipes to enter to get to the boss as fast (and hopefully as easy) as you can... And yeah, those Blue Outlines are the "something important". It was a joke. But can you tell what they are?

I won't ditch the SMB3 GFX, and I won't ditch the Chuck GFX. Have you played SMA4: SMB3? World-E had some levels with Chargin' Chucks, AND THEY HAD THE EXACT SAME GFX FROM SUPER MARIO WORLD. Thus, the Chucks are fine.

Chaos Force, I'll see if that's really fixes the problems with the patch on SMWCentral.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll show you at least one more screenshot today if I can.

This idea reminds of Mario Clash for the Virtual Boy. Where Mario threw shells at ememies. Maybe you can base your hack off that? The SMB 3 GFX always look great when used correctly. Since this hack is all about pipes *snaches cookies*, maybe you could use SMB 3 Pipes stages as references. Anyway, it sounds promising. Keep it up.

I already told you TWICE BEFORE, I'm not finalizing the idea that this hack is based around pipes, and even if I do base it around pipes, there's still going to be your average land levels and water levels (maybe some sky levels if I can get that GFX from SMB3). So NO COOKIES FOR YOU! The cookies are to those who can guess what Silver Pipeline 1 is based around (and you'd be surprised at what I'm going to use a lot in the level!). And by the way, I've never played Virtual Boy games. You're going to need to be a LOT more specific than that.

Edit: MORE STUFF!!!!

I'm using Custom Sprites now! Mostly the Poison 'Shroom, though. I changed blocks 127 and 128 to spit out that sprite no matter what.

I'm also having a problem. Remember the screenshot that showed the SMB3 pipes? Well, the level number that's in is flashing for some reason or another... The very top of the screen keeps flashing black. I believe it's because of my custom blocks, but no matter how many I take out, it does nothing to fix it.

NEW SCREENS!!!!

Onoez, Mario! You released a Poison Shroom! What are you gonna do?
Mario: "I'm-a gonna eat it!"

Poor Mario... If only he knew... (Yes, I purposely made Mario eat the Poison Shroom. Who cares? Also, those 5 blocks have been taken out. They gave you items in this order: Coin, Poison Shroom, Mushroom, Poison Shroom, Coin. Now it's just 2 coins and a normal 'Shroom.)

Here's where all the action is! I died up above (I have fish above there, and I touched one... Oops...), but I decided to go ahead and take this shot while Mario was there. XD Here, you have to swim against the currents and bounce on the Koopas without falling in the pit. I'd make it harder with some P-Switch Blocks, but I don't think that's very nice...

And here's the World 1 Map! Welcome to Silver Pipeline! All the Silver Pipes you see are levels, while the Green Pipes warp you to another location IN THE SAME WORLD. I'll make a different color for Warp Pipes that send you elsewhere... It looks empty, doesn't it? Heh, I've already got ALL THE LEVELS ready... Castle #1 is here, too. Only Silver Pipeline 1 is actually being worked on- The other levels aren't ready yet...

You know that piece that consists of 4 tiles that holds a vertical pipe and a horizontal pipe together? I was wondering if you could pack it up in a bin file, because I need it for my hack. I don't have the time to rip and redraw my own to fit my palettes because of a speech and PowerPoint I have to do. I would really appreciate it if you did.

You'd better give me credit for it if I do that. Besides, can't you wait until after you're done with what you need to do to get the GFX? All you need to do is get to World 7-1 in SMAS-SMB3, enter the first door, and make a savestate. Open that in YY-CHR, press + 19 times, and scroll down until you find the GFX. Copy and paste it into a GFX file from your hack, and you're done. (Unless you're not using SMB3 palettes- Then you have to recolor.) EASY AS PIE.

Very cool idea there. I especially like all those custom blocks...not many hackers go for that much 1337n355. The only dings are the backgrounds...make them a little darker. Those pipes look a bit foregroundy.

Are you using several different pipe backdrops in the first world? Silver pipes on a blue background will get old very fast.

Screens 1 and 2: XD. Looks like you got some inspiration from Anikiti and Ghettoyouth with the pipes and poison shroom.

Screen 3: Good, just "fade" the pipes a bit to make them look farther away. A lot of people have trouble with SMB3 waterfall ExGFX... those look good. Wooden blocks look a bit out of place though...

Screen 4: Awesome-looking silver pipes! Very, very original.

Keep up the good work, this hack could get repetitive so vary things a bit with each level.

Not that I particularly mind Chucks with SMB3 graphics, but that was incredibly lazy of Nintendo to reuse the SMW Chuck sprites.

Now you've got me pondering what an SMB3 styled Chuck would look like. They're probably the same species as Boom Boom, so he'd be a starting point, but he's just got a front view. None of the Koopa species wear boots or any kind of clothing before SMW, but he'd probably at least need the pads and helmet to register as a football player... Heh, I might give this a shot. (Or not. I sort of hate Chucks)

As for your hack, it looks pretty standard thus far. Interesting choice giving the Piranha Plants SMB3 vines for stems. I'm not really a fan of Poison Mushrooms, so hooray for one being taken out of the game! I'd definitely like to see more pipes off in the distance of your backgrounds.

I didn't get any inspiration from anyone for this. Plus, I'm doing something I have yet to see in a hack- A RAINBOW ROAD LEVEL. Yes, one of my worlds will be Rainbow Road! It'll have my own custom GFX, which I just started last night. I'll try darkening the color of the pipes, but I want them to look silver, not gray, which is what'll happen if I darken the colors too much.... Now, I won't mess with the colors of the BG for the outside areas, but for the inside, I agree, it DOES look too light.... XD THAT can be made darker, but I think that the colors for the outside of the pipes looks fine. Oh, if anyone can find me an ExGFX files containing YI Pipe Foreground tiles, I'd appreciate it if you'd let me use them. I've been looking for them for a long time, and I think they look great as a pipe interior than what I currently have... Meh. I have new plans for Part 3 of Silver Pipeline 1, but I won't reveal them yet... Oh yeah, by the way, I'll show you guys some screenshots of my Rainbow Road tiles to see which style you like better. I want to use the style that looks the best, so only the best will do.

Edit: As promised, here's the tiles all arranged in a certain way. Please note that each of the 4 rows is a different set of tiles. Alos note that all 8 colors I used (Yes, EIGHT) cycle. I love it. It's why I had to use EIGHT colors instead of 6 or 7. (Though now that I think about it, a rainbow actually has every single color imaginable in it... )

Do you like (these go in order from top to bottom):

-The Long Ribbon setup?
-The Blocky setup?
-The "Pixelated" setup?
-The "Bar" setup?

Please note that no matter what choice you choose, they're ALL going to have those fun pieces that have 2 colors blend together! Those are seen between each color on the top strand of colors, and the second strand is only those pieces. So pick whichever one you like best. But know this- I HAVE NOT MADE ANY WALL PIECES OR SLOPE PIECES. I'll make those after you choose your selection.

I already told you that no matter what choice you choose, they're ALL going to connect like the first two do. I only did that because it was easier for me to do it that way.

So, I guess I'll stick with number 1 then... Now all I have to do is find a way to make turning corners... XD

Personally I think #3 would look good with the transitions... and for the cornets, ust use one diagonal transition and two larger-than-usual colours beside it.

Also, you may want to add in clouds or 'neon' graphics in the background a la Mario Kart 64/Mario Kart: DD!!

I'd definitely use the first or second one also. #3 I just really don't like, and #4 .. well .. I guess it would be good if you were looking down on it from a top view or something I actually made a Rainbow Road level in my very old hack, but threw it into a void after I realized it sucked

By the way, I am rather fond of your pipe overworld. Now THAT has never been done before! It looks pretty nice. My only complaint is the castle - it looks really out of place there, especially with the grass along the bottom. If you could get a different castle graphic or something, it may look better.

Nice job overall though.

Of course I'll add those cool things like stars and the like. Just one thing- What's a cornet?

About the Castle... Well, I guess I can move the castle to the main overworld. THEN it'd look right. But I don't want to make the castle look like a pipe. Why would you do that?

Thanks for the comments. You know, if you were to play that level, you'd notice that the colors look like they're moving from right to left. It's supposed to look like they're going from left to right. XD
