What's your Super Mario World rating for Yoshi's Island 1? Here's what to do: Start up Super Mario World and record the # of lives that you initially have, this is l1. Enter Yoshi's island 1, pause the game and record the intial score, s1. Play through the level and try to score as many points and lives as you can in the shortest amount of time. As soon as you hit the gate with the big tape at the end of the level write down the score that you have at the end of the level, s2. Also record the amount of time you have left at the end of the level, t2. Finally, record how many lives Mario has at the end of the level, l2. Determine your rate by plugging in values for this equation: rating = (t2+5)[(s2-s1)+(l2-l1)] I got a rating of 11,198,272 for Yoshi's Island, can you beat it? Post your ratings. Post your ratings here: smwchampdepot.sourceforge.net/SMW_rating_tracker.php. You don't even have to calculate the rating. I have discovered a problem with the rating equation. There seems to be an unfair balance between the time at the end of the level and the score. To equalize things the equation should be something like this: rating=(t2+5)[((s2-s1)/[(t2+5)/100])+(l2-l1)] Keep calculating your ratings the old way until I make sure that the rating equation is well balanced. Ok, the new equation has been instated. | Interesting! If I get enough free-time, I'll give this a shot. With ALL the levels. Or most of them, at least... How 'bout just the hard ones? I'm curious to see your guys's scores at Valley Fortress, which could very well be the hardest level in the game.

And that's including abusing the item box points trick. Am I doing something wrong? Are you guys multiplying in the life difference instead of adding? Or, as I suspected at first, are you making stuff up? Anyway, I'll go and do Valley Fortress later, and give you all a score. |

| Out of sheer boredom, I went for the best runs I could get in Vanilla Fortress, which is the hardest castle-type level in the game. Valley Fortress is so much easier when you have the rhythm down, while water is evil no matter what. I also shoved in a Butter Bridge 1 run, because it's a fun level and has opportunities for Koopa Jump Abuse. Although, I didn't actually abuse it.
But really, I picked Vanilla Fortress because it's so hard to actually score points in it. You've got the feathers, and whatever you can hit with the cape... and that's IT. So it's basically a speed run, but with killing everything and getting all the powerups. Was great fun. I actually doubt the testers at Nintendo are as good at the games as the hardcore gamers are. They had to go on afterwards and test other games, but we kept playing the same game over and over again. You know? Oh, and I'd love to see a score for Forest of Illusions 1. *snicker* |

I tried so many times, but I didn't manage to clear a half billion on FoI 1. So... Close...! In case you were wondering, I usually submit my first score, then hand calculate my next ~10 runs and submit the best one. And they don't actually do the ghost runs, they construct a sequence of controller commands for them and record THAT. Like assisted speedrunning. Or at least that's what I've heard, dunno if I'm right. |
