Inspired by Acmlm, I decided to intsall Windows 2000 in VMWare last night.

Acmlm's goal was to shrink Windows XP down as far as he could, making sure it still booted.

My goal is to flood 2000 with horrible spyware.

So far, the results have been acceptable.

There's some pretty tame things, like the standard YOU HAVE PORN ON YOUR COMPUTER (...right), FIX IT NOW, FREE TRIP, PLAY CASINO NOW, etc. Nothing insane.

I've set up a "webcam" with the current desktop image of it, right here! Updates every 5 seconds.

Whoo. Refresh a few times and there's like 8 more popups.

"Desintallation"? Why in the world are you flooding yourself with Spyware, viruses, and the like? That just seems... stupid.

Sheer boredom, perhaps?
I think it would be interesting actually...

Maybe I should create an email account with the goal of seeing how much spam per day I can get.

NOTICE: Your computer has tracks of all adult sites you had visited. In most cases, you are not even aware of the files that get installed by themselves, violate your online privacy and could compromise your career and your marriage.
These files leave tracks of your online behavior and even compromise your credit card's security. It is possible to clean up all the temporary and history records of your computer to remove these tracks.

Would you like to install DriveCleaner to check your computer for free? (Recommended)

Installing DriveCleaner is a fantastic start because it's horrid spyware.

Did you go ahead and load up Kazaa on that thing? StopBadware.org is also great for seeing what rogue stuff's out there.

Try getting a Trojan Downloader to download dozens of MS32's into your virtual C drive, preventing you from opening or doing anything.

Or just look at the spyware forums that complain about programs and do the exact opposite of what they say.

Yeah, I tried to get the Jessica Simpson Screensaver there, but the link they had was broken. D'oh.

I did get the FreeMP3Search plugin, though, and even waded through about twenty IE crashes to get it, heh...

(and it actually ran to full, go figure)

How long until the spyware eats up all the RAM and processing power, to the point Windows won't even run anymore (or gets very slow)? It'd also be nice if goggle.com was still full of popups and viruses so you could go there

And for those of you who weren't on IRC at the time, here's what I did to Windows XP:
- smallest Start menu ever
- low RAM usage
- commandline is dead
- whee, can't run anything (I fixed it after )
- the disk is not formatted (except it was) and cannot be formatted
- broken taskbar
- shrinking the registry
- shrinking the registry, part 2
- that's a small pagefile
- still doing good so far
- what's left of system32
- shrinking the registry, part 3 (emptied HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG)
- my pretty desktop
- after all of this, Solitaire still runs
- now I broke Explorer (reverted it back after)
- compare this with yours
- whee, can't save anymore

- current status
- Program Files
- Documents and Settings

I did it to Windows 3.1 too:
- hehe (then I deleted the "dos" folder as well)
Cynthia

Uh-huh.

How'd you get the tray and clock next to the Start button?

Resize the VMWare window with VMTools installed I'm guessing... and the resize guest option enabled if I remember right.

It'll automatically move there if your tray can fix next to it. If there's enough icons to make the tray wider than the space next to it, it'll go back to the bottom.

*Rydain is literally LOL'ing at Acmlm's links

Not to knock the original material here - trying to make the most infected Win2K install ever is a worthwhile endeavor, and the results thus far are quite amusing - but I didn't know it was possible to screw up XP to that extent. That's quality fuckupery right there.
