Spoiler Warning!

I got it on Friday and only got round to playing it this morning. I'm only up to w1-7, but I gotta say, I'm a little disappointed so far.

There are a few nice new features, like the M blocks, and a lot (if not, all) of the old enemies and features make a return, but

  • The music, put bluntly, sucks. It's so boring; they could have just reused the old music.
  • The ground graphics of most outdoor levels in the first world are awful; too solid-looking; they actually look like cheese. But the castle and cave graphics are done quite well.
  • Old levels keep popping up, including bonus areas. It was fine for the Welcome to Yoshi's Island level, but they should've drawn the line there.
  • Most backgrounds are really plain, and those that aren't are used over and over.
  • The split between the two screens is just annoying; there are about 40 pixels between the two that are invisible while playing. I'd prefer if it were more like NSMB.
</bitching>

I'm hoping things will get better (and the rest of the levels will redeem these bad points) as the game goes on.

Anyway, what do you guys think of it?

I personally thought it looked gimmicky ;\ for one, they're releasing a sequal to a game that made a ton of money years and years later, obviously trying to make money just from the name alone. The concept of baby DK and baby Peach not ony don't make sense chronologically, but as I said, are beyond gimmicky. I don't know...Yoshi's Island was one of my favorite games of all time, but I don't see myself picking this one up..

I've only played the demo, but I can easily see the stated half-ass-ness.

I was pissed when I played through "Make Eggs, Throw Eggs" (or whatever it's called) again on the first stage. This could obviously have been a tad bit better.

Still fun play though.

Wait, so it has actual levels from the original? Does it have music from the original then? Please tell me that's not the stuff that sucks

I played it at PAX back in August and said to myself "This game sucks and I am not buying this." Yoshi's Island was fun, but was absurdly easy or absurdly tedious, depending on whether you wanted bonuses or not. Thus, I do not view it as a particularly good game... But still, it was leaps and bounds better than this.

Meh, I probably get it anyway. I kept reading about people really liking but then... I'm surprised they weren't reusing levels in NSMB (I was at least expecting to find level 1-1 somewhere from the orginal SMB... but I didn't), but did that for Yoshi island DS.

Shame they didn't reuse the old music, becuse that rocked.

Given how all the sites are giving it good reviews, I'm pretty surprised to see most of the people here crapping all over it.

I'm looking forward to playing it in any event.

That's what I was surprised about.

I was expecting the same "feel" from the game too, but the atmosphere is totally different (and then other little things like having to hold Y to run _¬ ).

Well at least I've had more patience with this than with Super Princess Peach -- 2 levels,

The graphics look too "kiddy" in this one. The old one had fantastic and cool graphics. This reminds me a hell of a lot like Yoshi's Story. And the beginning of the level music (the tapping) made me sick how shitty it was.

And I had suuuuuch high hopes....

I looked at a gameplay video.

I don't see how the graphics would be more kiddy, maybe just less "blocky" and that's about it.

It reminded me of a storybook. I just think the overall atmosphere felt like a child's game. I'll still get it, but this isn't as good as the first one.

Storybook? That doesn't surprise me a bit, looking back at Yoshi's Story (I didn't like that game at all compared to Yoshi's Island).

I don't know, I was interested in this but seeing how everyone is saying its bad ... not sure if I'll pick it up or not now.

The game plays the same, kinda. I'm still gettin' it.

Hell, when I first played Metroid Prime, I thought it was shit, but after a while, I fell in love with it.

I'd still be interested in trying it out somehow. I mean, even if it's not quite up to YI standards, it might still be good if it's close.

Strange reactions here though.

I don't understand the reactions either, as the orginal YI does look a little bit cartoony too. Some backrounds in orginal YI looks like they're drawn by crayons, and that's by purpose even.

why? Baby Mario and baby Peach were the same age in PiT and we never got to see DK in the past

the thing I hated anout this game was level 1-4 boss(lamest. boss. ever.), some level that are just plain retarded(such as 'the cave that never end') and the final boss's first form graphic.

outside of this, it is a very good game even tought the storyline look like more that it is a sequel of PiT insted of YI

I do not personally have this game, but I know people who do. I heard it gets much much better past the 3rd world or so, and really fun/difficult.

Personally, I would like to buy it just because I'm a die-hard YI fan (obviously ) and because I'd just really like to see why people don't like it as much as the original.

if it takes until world four to get good then the people did not follow one of the most basic of design rules and clearly are too incompetent to be bothered with.

Also, isn't this game shorter? I was sad. And if I am correct, the Burt Bros., as previously stated, looked gay enough in the friggin' guide, dammit.

Spoiler (Also...):I'm actually interested to see how Bowser fits into playability, for those who didn't know...

Lots of RPG's don't get really good until later on (playing around with jobs, classes, character combos, stats, etc.) so I fail to see your point.

As long as it's not a PAIN to get to that point, then it's fine.
