My icons are 32x32 (even if they don't look it), and most desktops start out with 32x32 icons. 
They're too small if you use something like 48x48, yes, but I don't  |

| I have as my My Computer icon... a rendition of the actual hardware - a dark gray laptop.
It's facing the wrong way, but looks nifty anyhow. And it has a big ass C:\ prompt on it. |
