Michael Crichton was pretty much attacked universally by most climate scientists due to the shoddiness of that book.

hilariously, he was given an award by the Friend of Petroleun or some equally whacky institute.

Again, I'm going with what the scientific community is publishing on this front. And that is going to be my opinion - and it will change pragmatically as new information comes in. I'm not trained at all in these sciences, hence I'm going to go with the logical course.

for those that have subscriptions to the NYT the article notes that he kind of misused some climate trends as proof against global warming.

This is why I don't get involved in debates. Because I'm always not informed enough.

Good to know that info, though Ziff.

.....so anyone remember people bitching about the weather back in the 30's..about a global cooling? (At least I think it was the 30's)

Its called a cycle people! Get used to it. I mean, we don't know every little detail about the planet and I doubt we ever will.

So hows that cold front going, BTW?

Besides, everyone knows that the zombies are gonna get us before anything else does. Woot, waiting for 2012!

Wing sucks. Those are not gundams.

Anya: We may not know every detail of the earth but if we know what's causing major pollution and global warming(DATA NOT DISPUTED BY ANY SCIENTIST) then why not devote a lot of time, money, and work towards fixing it?

By the time the WTC memorial thing gets built it will probably be under water.

In other news, Bush sucks.

This video was good too.

I hate to copy asdf, but come on guys, what's with all the serialness?

It's a load of crap. It's the same exact thing as in the 80's with global cooling. Watch the gagillion-part (yeah, I exaggerated ) video that MathOnNapkins linked.

Face the facts. The earth has been around for billions of years. Man has only been industrialized for a little more than a century. The constant eruptions of volcanos spew more pollution into the atmosphere than man could dream of.

I don't know about you, but that tells me the earth has a way of working itself out.

Do you serials fear manbearpig, too?

The issue has nothing to do with whether you are "trained" or not. Not to go conspiracy theory on you but did you ever consider that maybe people who are in this field are in this field for a reason? Agenda. I'm not asserting that they ALL have an agenda but the possibility is there that a significant majority does.

Statistics and data speak for themselves. Anyone can look at a graph of data and make some basic connections as to what it implies. I watched both of those movies, and I'd say the global warming skeptic movie was way more in depth when it came to sheer data and charts and the analysis therein. For example, the C02 data that is commonly presented in Global Warming arguments comes from two different sets of data from different geographical sites. But when you use the data from the Hawaii site exclusively, the C02 level is all over the place and you wouldn't even think of a correlation if you looked at it. Now, are Global Warming scientists flat out wrong b/c of a cooked graph like that? Perhaps - if they can't come up with a good reason or explanation.

Dude, obviously the world has a way of working around it. We have to help it to adapt from these problems in the best way possible.

Just because the earth has a way of working itself out does NOT mean that ice caps WON'T melt and there WON'T be a lot of casualties.

So what do people think of the fact that even governments like the UK government are publishing very dire warnings that doing nothing could potentially reduce global GDP by 20% or more? Are the UK government just a bunch of wacko environmentalists making shit up? Are the European Union?

I just watched a show about this on Discovery not too long ago. The gist of it was that the real problem is the temperature of the oceans. If they heat up even a few more degrees, this will change the way the ocean currents flow. Most of the temperature on the surface comes from the oceans because water holds heat hundreds of times better than air does. The ocean currents currently distribute heat to places like the UK making it a nice relatively warm place to live despite being very far from the equator. If the ocean currents change and no longer flow warm water up that way, England will become very icy and cold and not habitable for the number of people living there right now, as would most of the Northern USA. Generally what would happen is many places would become extremely cold and icy, while other places would become very hot and dry. Globally crop yields would plumit and the number of people we could feed would fall well below the number of people currently on the planet. This isn't expected to happen suddenly over night, the scientists on that show expected it to happen in 20-40 years if the current trends continue.

Hey Al Gore,

You'll ruin the economy you psychotic left-wing homosocialist. I may not have a degree...in anything, but I can tell you that I watched a video on the internet that doesn't look like it was funded by oil. And you're wrong.

Alright, lemme rephrase my opinion.

Global Warming may be real, but we as a human race are not the cause.
