The good lag is what slows nubs in Gunbound down.

I challenge you someday. XD

At least we're doing a server move by choice rather than getting fscked over, huh?

Yes, adding a " />" everywhere really will lessen the code amount, as well as things like having to include closing tags and everything...

That was the joke. We're about to move, and the server decides to not be stupid anymore. Actually...I never finished the joke. Must of been too tired and hit submit. I was going to say afterwards, "Too bad we aren't on that new sexcellent server yet. Perhaps it's a waste of time (and money)..." Something along those lines.

I wouldn't really call "moving from a $80/month server with constant problems that hosts 5 other websites and we're the only one that actually puts any money into the server that someone else owns anyway, to a $25/month one that we'll have all to ourselves and actually own" losing money.

Inconspicuous.

It'll become larger and more obvious (and red!) when it's down to more like 24/12 hours.

Personally I'm just surprised (and kinda disappointed) you told everyone what it was about this time, instead of making people think "LOL BOARD GOES IN ".

Just because it's obvious, blue, and friendly now, does not mean that it will not be big, red, and gigantic later.

If I were performing the move here is how I'd do it.

As soon a the new server is set up with all of the required services and accounts, log into a shell on the new server. From the shell, use FTP or SCP to copy the files from the old server's web space directly into the new server's web space. Then, from the same shell, use SSH to execute mysqldump on the old server, and pipe the output into the mysql command on the new server to copy the database(s).

Then, test the setup on the new server, inviting others to help. Fix any problems that come up.

When the time for the move starts to come within the TTL of the DNS, start ramping down the TTL so that there will be little or no DNS information cached at the time of the switchover.

When the time comes to switch, block both the old and new servers with a .htaccess file. Point the DNS to the new server, and set the TTL back to a permanent value. Copy the database(s) from the old server as above. To ensure that such things as avatars and attachments are current, copy new or recently changed files from the old server.

Finally, remove the block.

That is how I'd do it. The direct server to server copying is for speed, as servers almost certainly have connections that are much faster than almost all residential connections. The overall process is designed to maximize availability.

I wonder if the actual move will be anything like what I described here.

From what I heard, they will just put everything in a giant tarball then move that to the other server and unpack it there.

all files -> gigantic tarball
mysql dump -> plain text

I just realized that I should probably do some database prioritizing here, since undoubtedly some of the larger ones will take a while (the old archive is quite a bit, and even the new one is rather large...)

We'll use the current server (board.acmlm.org/acmlm.org) for move progress, as well as having new.acmlm.org for where the new server is. Once everything's set up and working, eventually everything will be moved over and we'll be all set.

I figure at the worst I can add some sort of boring tagboard while you wait, or at least keep the old chat applet available for people.

You probably should move some of the static stuff right away, as I doubt the archive would change much during the 27 hours or so.

Oh yeah, why not make the counter larger for each minute it approches the doom?
