yeah, really. You're not supposed to flail around like a goddamned lunatic. There's reports of people throwing their controller through the window for fuck's sakes! And breaking 40 inch TVs.

And I blame them for being stupid. =/

Simply put, agreed.

I saw a video where the wristband broke.

I also saw that he threw it quite hard too... it almost looked like he did it on purpose too.

Yeah, did you hear that thing hit the ground? KABOOM! He must have just chucked it as hard as possible and let go, like WTF.

Anyway, I called Nintendo to ask them some questions I had about Wii. I can't say I'm particularly happy with the results...

Q: Can or will Wii play DVDs?
A: No, but there will be another version (a separate console) released that will.
Now this doesn't make sense to me. If the games are already using a DVD-like media then why the heck can't DVD playback be given through a firmware update? Blah blah licensing fees, it's not like they can't charge for this update.

Q: Can the Gamecube Broadband Adapter be used?
A: Didn't really have an answer here. He mentioned there'd be a LAN adapter (for those who don't have wifi), but couldn't say if GCN BBA games could be used with it. I was hoping I could buy the GCN Action Replay and use it on my Wii to hack GCN games, instead of actually buying another GCN and BBA just for this. Unless someone finds another means of doing high-speed transfers between the Wii in Gamecube mode and a PC, replacing the need for the BBA for hacking (though you're still SOL if you want to use it for any official features).
(I had a GCN, but it was half my brother's, and since he played it so much more than I did, I just kept my games and left the rest when I moved. )

Q: Is there any form of discount or trade-in for Virtual Console games if we already own the originals?
A: No, you have to buy them again.

Q: If the system were to die, would we have to buy our VC games again since they're locked to the system they're bought on?
A: Wasn't entirely sure on this one either, but he said since the account information is on their server, you should be able to call and have them transfer your account to another console, which would allow you to re-download the games for free. This does make me wonder though what happens if the original console isn't dead, and still has those games on it.

First one hasn't been confirmed by Nintendo in North America... more often than not it's been denied so it might not come overseas.

I can't see why the Broadband Adapter is valid. :\ And good luck trying to prove that you own VC games.

Receipt system? Who knows.

But I REALLY want to play Wiisports. I've been doing a lot of practise at the gym lately and my punches are getting totally sweet and I want to kill people at wiiboxing.

Send them in. They could be stamped or have a serial number recorded or something and sent back so you keep the original without being able to have a friend send the same cart in. Or just have adapters for them. There's a few ways it could be done.

Hopefully it does, because if the games really are so similar to DVD, there's no reason at all DVD playback can't be offered through an optional software update.

I was just disappointed that when I FINALLY find a GCN AR in a store, I no longer have a GCN. I was hoping to use Wii for the same purpose, but that'd require BBA compatibility. I'm not about to buy another Gamecube just for that unless it's damn cheap.

Meh, I already have a DVD player but I like the idea of using things to their fullest extent. That is to say if I have a 19" TV I like the picture to be 19 inches (hence why I dislike "widescreen" movies), and in the case of CRT monitors I try to adjust them to have as large an image as possible. If I have a machine with a DVD-ROM drive, which certainly has all the processing power required to play DVDs, then I'd like to see it play a DVD.

What really pisses me off is I just realized the true reason support has to be a separate console rather than a firmware update: the Wii's hardware, not being designed with DVDs in mind, lacks the Macrovision bug. You know that little "feature" in DVD players that fucks up the picture if connected through a VCR... they'd have to somehow add that to the console, hence a separate version. DRM screws us again! I already have to rewire a bunch of stuff every time I want to watch a DVD (another reason I'd like Wii to do the job) because of this "feature", because everything going into my TV passes through my VCR first.

As for reports, what I heard went something like this. Wii will play DVDs. Actually, it won't. Heck, it will. Nah, maybe not. Well to be precise it'll be an option. (Never specifying that this was an option you make when you buy the system - and those who want it have to wait - rather than a simple on/off switch or add-on.)

I got a question for the people who have the Wii.

Q: Have they released the Opera Internet yet? I heard you had to download it, but it's not on for download, yet.......
And if it is out (or not) do we have to pay for it?

I keep hearing it'll be a free download until July. No idea how true that is. You can already browse the web with a small hack though.

So, we had our first Wiimote casualty tonight, and it was my glass.

No, the strap didn't break and no, the remote didn't go flying into it. We were all playing bowling and my glass was sitting on the table, and my roommate swung the remote straight into the glass.

Serves us right for not clearing the area.

I really doubt that's the real reason. More than likely, they don't have the various content descramblers (and/or whatever) required to actually play movies.

What, so you like paying for a portion of the screen that doesn't get used? I mean if you had a wide TV that'd be another thing, but letterbox is just annoying.

This can all be done via software.
