This system is a fun little thing I whipped up to easily rate a video game... and a video gamer! Remember, most ratings are of the viewpoint of the rater and this system of rating is somewhat biased to my personal tastes. Remember, rate games on the basis of others, not your own personal tastes, those will be inevitably be included but it is good to start with what other people think.

0 - Worst
10 - Best

Video Game
0 - Not worth the cardboard. A horrible video game that offers horrible gameplay and/or graphics. Something no one will ever play twice. Few games actually deserve this rating. EX: Zelda: Wand of the Gameleon

1 - Very bad. A video game that offers a] horrible graphics or b] horrible gameplay.

3 - Bad. A video game that has bad gameplay and mediocre graphics. Also a mandatory category for video games that have violence as the means and ends of the game and/or contain pointless real life racism as a focal point. EX: GTA

5 - Average. A video game that has decent graphics and gameplay. Is fun for the first time. EX: Super Mario Sunshine

7 - Excellent. A video game that offers decent graphics and good gameplay, is fun for the first time and when you have friends with you. EX: Halo 2

9 - Great. A video game that is fun regardless of the quality of graphics because of its fun gameplay. EX: Tetris (SNES or other simple version)

10 - Legend. A video game that has stood the test of time and is still fun to play, even as a first time. EX: Chrono Trigger

Gamers
0 - The Tack Jhompson Category. Self-explanatory. If you are of this category you shouldn't be reading this, this is for more intelligent and open-minded people.

1 - Newb and equivalent. One who doesn't learn and is a nuesicence to anyone that trys to teach him/her. Not to be confused with Newbies. One who also rates game based purely on graphics.

3 - OverFan. One who states that X genre/system is better than everything else and will always be better than everything else.May often use graphics and violence to rate games. May use !337 Speak in Multiplayer.

5 - Average. Still rates games on graphics and violence, but will recgonize a bad game and will try others.

7 - Good. One who is open-minded about games and, though can be biased based on game type, is open-minded about game companies. Doesn't judges a game based on fun and gameplay for the most part. EX: Stephan Reiken, creator of this system.

9 - Excellent. Anyone who is truly open-minded about games in both genre and company. Never judges a game based on graphics or violence. Knows personal prefrences well but does not put down games not of his/her preference.

10 - Legend. No one deserves this, and anyone who says they are a 10 themselves is a 5 at best.

Sooo... it's a 0-10 scale. Real innovative there. Don't know why others didn't think of that.

(I dont't wanna say nothin', but smart money says you're gon' get mocked for this thread.)

Anyone could pull a rating system out of their ass. 5-star system, 10-point system, % scale, general opinion... too many options.

I prefer the Is Fun/Not Fun scale. Two categories, and nothing is going to go wrong.

For you, that would work fine. But that's an extremely objective scale and it's like giving a game a 10 or a 0, really. People wouldn't bother to read the review, they'd just go for the score.

Well, if they fail to read the review, then how can they figure out why or why not the game is good? Eh?

I read reviews. Sometimes they are very biased and I have to see why a game is bad to the reviewer. On BMS there were complaints that beatmania for the US got low ratings just because it was "imitating Guitar Hero". If looking at the score, I would have not gotten the concept of the game...

Reading the review of Gears of War makes it seem like god sent from above...but there are major issues with it, just like any game

I give this rating system a 3/10 for being overdone.

Bah, none of you get my light-hearted, though strange in concept, humor. I was in a strange modd and just decided to whip it up and see what people think. Think what you may, this was fun to whip in in my own fashion.

Mostly, it is interesting to see the difference in replies from one forum to another. This forum goes into debate about reviewing games... I'd prefer more posts like HyperHacker, though I'd prefer more detail. What do you think is overdone? Would not being overdone make it better?

Anyone can make a rating system... but what do they rate? Most I see rate Graphics and Gameplay and sometimes Sound or some third category, and then either the average of them being the overall or a seperate overall. I do not believe that you can seperate any of those categories if you want to actually rate a game, it has to be one solid number.

I remember The sims gettin a score of 7/10 in a female magazine... and that was apparently the highest score that a game have gotten too. xD Most good games tend to be between 7-10 when people review it, and the 10 point system feels a bit cliche.

Someone who's strict can save a high 9 rating for a truly remarkable game, and someone who's lenient might give a game a high 9 because it's just plain fun.

That's why, if you're going to rely on reviews, you need several opinions. I'm surprised at how well the Wii launch titles are scoring, for instance, but I'll still wait for more reviews to come in before starting to consider what to get.

You're probably dead on the money on both based on what I've read so far. I just find it surprising since launch lineups... generally aren't THAT great.

Read my post again, Ailure. I said launch LINEUPS.

You can have one or two great games in a launch lineup and fifteen average or below-average games. It's rare to see a launch lineup with a few great games and several good games.

Ailure, killer apps. Every launch has one or two.

SSX, Halo, (What was Gamecube's?), Zelda TP, etc.

For the most part launch titles are generally kind of boring and dreary (see Gungriffon), aside from the afforementioned things that you'd kick your best friend for. Which I have no doubt you would do.

GameCube's was Super Smash Bros. Melee, but that came out a couple of weeks after the system. At launch it might have been Wave Race since that got generally good reviews. Sure as hell wasn't Luigi's Mansion.
