I'm just going to copy/paste the article first...

GameStop not getting enough PS3s to fill preorders

Retailer's launch allocations not expected to cover original batch of reservations; employees "asked" to wait until second shipment to buy systems.

By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot
Posted Nov 13, 2006 3:28 pm ET

Last month, retailer GameStop began accepting "limited" preorders for the PlayStation 3, asking customers to put down $100 in advance for the system, with a modest expectation of eight units per store in most cases. Now it appears the largest gaming specialty chain in North America won't be receiving even that many systems.

A GameStop representative told GameSpot today that the company received launch allocation numbers from Sony, and that it won't be able to fill its existing PS3 preorders. The representative declined to comment on how many systems GameStop expected to receive, or how short of that figure the company's share of systems would be.

"We are beginning to notify our customers that our initial shipment of PS3 systems will not be what we expected," the representative said. "As this is not an ideal situation, we are asking employees to wait to purchase systems until the second shipment. We are anticipating having systems to cover reservations before Christmas."

For launch day, preorders will be filled in the order they were received, and those who had a preorder but are denied a system on day one will receive something for their troubles. GameStop will give those unfortunate customers (as well as unfortunate employees) a free used game or DVD valued at $19.99 or less when they eventually wind up purchasing the system.

Those who reserved a system won't need to wait long to find out if they can expect a system on launch day. Starting tomorrow, customers who preordered a PS3 will be contacted personally by phone and updated on the status of their reservation, the rep said.

And while it might be a nonissue considering the clamor for consumers to get their hands on the coveted systems, GameStop is also asking anyone with a confirmed preorder to pick their systems up by Saturday evening.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Sony drops the shipment number to 400,000 and then can't even fill that?!? You absolutely can't blame GameStop given the fact they were already conservative with their pre-orders, but this is on track to be the most disastrous launch ever.

EDIT: Kotaku apparently said that the GS shipments were cut in HALF. So if a store was receiving 8 units, they're only getting 4.

The average amount of systems per store are supposed to be eight now. That's what I read from Gamespot.

Too many conflicting reports, actually... but we'll find out for sure tomorrow when people get phone calls saying their system isn't coming in. And if someone was #5/6 in a store scheduled to get 8 units and they get that message, well... :\

I can see the future.

In a few years, when the PS3 is something worthwhile to own, I will walk up to a store and purchase it right then and there.

...And both Microsoft and Nintendo will have sold more units by then. XD

Seriously... whether the console becomes a success or not, this launch is pathetic.

Our store took 16 pre-orders and we're getting 10 systems on launch day.

Though technically, our stores were supposed to inform customers that their pre-order did not guarantee them a system on launch day, simply their place in line. (Mostly because we were leery of Sony's chances of delivering PS3's. Surprise, surprise! )

I think system launch have nothing to do with how the system does in general.

Things like this makes me wonder if I should bother getting a Wii at launch or wait for a second or third shipment. I heard rumours about failing PS3 units even before launch... but thoose are just that, rumours.

.....................

............

I used to be a Sony (Play station) fan girl. Anyone who really knows me knows this.

....

Fuck Sony. They've pissed me off for the final time. I mean, yes, at the managers' conf in Texas they pissed me off, and I got over it, but with this launch bullshit, this is pushing it, BIG time. Going back to the conf real fast....they didn't even make an admit to shine. I was actually convinced to get a Xbox360 while I was there and Nintendo's party for us, well, I still don't want a Wii (but hell, that might even change) but at least they made an effort. Sony, heh, they're all like, " We don't need to show you what we can do, we have Blu Ray and we are Sony, that is all you need to know".

Baaaka!!!

But, of course I'll get a Ps3, I want to play Metal Gear and all the new FF's.

I swear, even Microsoft needs to take a page out of Nintendo's book, they know how to do it right.

So anyway, on the conf call yesterday, my DM (at the start of the call) says that he has bad news about Sony. Now, I was thinking that they delayed the launch (which right now, I honestly think they should) but no, we're getting less units than originally hoped.

Now, with the X360 launch, Gamestop screwed up big time. We didn't stop taking reserves until it was too late. We had over 100 reserves and at the launch, we only got 20.

This time, we were told how many each store would get.

Mine = 17

Now = 8

Thank goodness, I only took in 15 reserves, just in case. But still, I am fucking pissed for those people and now I have to call them up to tell them what number they are on the list and if they're getting a Ps3 on Friday or not.

I'm just happy that the four people that were in my store mad early when I started to take reserves, will be getting theirs, so at least thats one good thing about this whole thing.

But, honestly, and this is what I say to everyone: Its never good to get a system at launch, there is always something wrong with it. Hell, even Microsoft has announced that they're first gen X360 systems were defected and are letting people to send in their system and to get a new one free of charge. Even so, the only system...the only company that I trust to get at launch, is Nintendo.

I feel bad for those stores who are getting 4 units now..I mean, I knew this would hurt our sales comp, but damn, only 4 units..and how many people are going to want their money back?! Heh, thanks a lot Sony.

Sorry for the rant, but yea, I'm pissed.

Remember how Sony said they'd have 400,000 PS3's ready for the North American launch? A small number that would make it extremely difficult to find one on Friday?

Well... try 150,000 to 200,000 max.

This is officially, without a doubt, the most botched launch in console history.

Yeah, but at least Sega decided to take a chance with the surprise launch, and with a bit more thought it would have been a great idea.

Urg, So now my boss is checking to see which ppl put in reserves at the stores in my district and are placing them on ebay, and well, botton line, he's not letting them pic of their reserves. Also, if people put in a reserve at two stores, they're only allowed to pick it up at one and not the other.

Oh, this is gonna be a fun Friday.

Plus, ppl have been in front of Best Buy since Tuesday.

Saturn had it bad, but this is the lowest amount of consoles anyone has ever shipped with. That's just a recipe for disaster right there. I really have to wonder what Sony is thinking...

Nintendo isn't Sony. I can't recall any major issues with Nintendo systems at launch... of course, there's plenty of other reasons to wait until a bit after initial launch (price, more games), but generally Nintendo's been pretty reliable on system quality.

Heh...

Video-games are a massive business nowadays. This is Sony's last chance to really keep its established strength as an electronics super-giant.

Well, alot of people are wanting to Sony to die... becuse of the scandals related to their record department.

Also, weren't Sega relesing the Saturn without any games in USA for a week or so? XD I read something like that. Saturn is probably a good example of why a rushed release is not always a good idea...

Thexare: Heh I should have splitted that paragraph. Reasons why I would wait a bit for the Wii would be price and avaibility. I hadn't heard anything about early Gamecube units failing, though there's the gamecube lens error (I have no idea how rare, or common this is though, hadn't heard about any case personally just read on Gamefaqs.)... but then the most common error on modern consoles is the disc reader failing. :/

I don't think Sega were dumb enough to do THAT, and at least the Saturn had a pack-in I think. (Virtua Fighter?)

Anya: Well, that makes sense. People can put PS3's on eBay but NOT the reserve.

It was pretty much as bad as he said. It was a bad business plan Sega had. Nothing as bad as what Sony is plotting though. There are many 3rd party developers that are hoping this is Sony's last death cough and they start over again. I don't have much hope in the PS3 being a particularly successful system in the opening stages of the new war. X360 has a fairly good installed base already (one which is going to balloon at Christmas time this year and explode next year). Wii has the ear, eye, heart, and liver of everyone who has set their eyes upon it. It doesn't have the cliquey appeal of iPod like Nintendo hoped. It has something better, in that it is generating interest and debate about the future of interactive entertainment.

I mean PS3 can't be all bad. It has Resistance: Fall of Man. I visited the official website. I've read the reviews. I've played a quick demo. Wow. Amazing game. Immersive, creepy. I'm quite impressed. I hope it gets ported
