Correct. A good example of this is one of the democratic candidates from Tennessee. He is pro-life, pro-gun, and anti-gay marriage.

Wasn't that Harold Ford Jr.? I could've sworn that was him. And of course, he lost. (Because he was going for Bill Frist's seat. Figures.)

The important thing here isn't their numbers. It's that because the Dems have the majorities, they get the committees. And they get to have more say than the Republicans over what happens in Congress. If they can recast the debate in their terms (step one is realigning the House and Senate chambers in the form of a middle finger which continually points at Karl Rove) then they should survive a deadlock-induced "WAAAAH THE DEMOCRATS DID NOTHING" attack in aught-eight.

Of course, anyone with the wisdom to see that they'll have to work together should do so, and hey, maybe we'll have a Congress that Gets Meaningful Shit Done. (see: geeogree's last post) The moderates are probably annoyed as fuck with both parties right now and just wish the lunatic fringes would go away already.

Arwon: Dunno about the House, but no Democratic incumbent Senator lost. That surprised me when they mentioned it.

Democrats apparently have both now.

And the "tricks" that I was referring to before hand were HERE.

And they've done things like it before, such as The 2002 New Hampshire Senate Election Phone Jamming Scandal.

Not to mention the one that went on during this one.

Guys.... if you're a democrat or a republican...

...just know that they both are up to tricks. One's not sneakier than the other, they are all morons in the long run... I'm an independant, so I'll vote in the direction that best suits me.

Personally, I hate politics. If I was forced for some reason to lean either way, I would have to chose Rep, but I'm never going to register to vote.

I consider it a duty to vote, if we dont vote we leave the government to a bunch of fools, lobbyists, and reactionaries. Not that my one vote is necessarily going to make a difference, but if i dont vote than i only have myself to blame, while if i do vote then at least i did all i could.

I think this election went about as well as it could have. I'm very pleased we ran out many of the bums. I'm most pleased in my own state, we got rid of Santorum (I always disliked everything about him), and we re-elected Murtha, who is one of the few politicians I have a great deal of respect for.

for possibly the 1st time ever I have to agree with geeogree, it's probably bad for any party to have complete control of the government. It's like Orwell said, Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Speaking of Santorum, we've all seen this, right?

I don't think I need to say anything about the daughter up front. (squirm) Can we still use the Dan Savage-approved definition of "santorum"? Tommathy? Anybody?

I love how people make it up to be "hell" in the last two years Bush is serving.

Here is something I thought I would share from someone who is in the military....

(Parental Advisory)

Spoiler:
"I would just likes to say liberals are probably the dumbest people on earth. According to you dumb asses we haven't done anything in Iraq and John Kerry's stupid ass thinks soldiers are stupid. You know what? Just because you fuckers dont have the balls to defend your country and hide behind a tree doesn't mean you can call soldiers like me stupid and uncapable of accomplishing our goals in Iraq. Why don't you fuckers get a clue and show whats really happens in Iraq and all the good things that outweigh the bad things. But no, you wont because you have your head jammed so far up your asses and care more about homosexuals rights and letting us do are job and shutting your fucking mouth. Liberals are taking the pride out of America and ruining the traditional values. So, you know what fuck you! If you dont like the way we do business in America and want to sit on your asses and collect wellfair while everyone else works hard and doesn't bitch, go move to canada or mexico. see how you like it there fuckers! don't wave the American flag and say your patriots when all you are is a bunch of cowards. Get a fucking clue!"

Kind of interesting because in sense some of that is true. Like the whole Kerry dissing everyone in the military. I am mad our Governer isn't Mark Green but Jim Doyle.

I also think voting is something every American should HAVE to do. We had state wide elections and roughly 400,000 people voted, me being one of them. Milwaukee itself has 700,000+ I think we need more people to start voting. What do you think?

Why?

Basically for the attitude that "I'm in the military so fuck you all my opinions are worth more". Utter contempt for civilians and you know, the people they work for. Partisan cheerleading disguised as "patriotism". And of course, a touch of good old fashioned fag bashing. The mark of a good military person is humility, devotion to service, self-discipline, and recognising that the diversity of views and lifestyles that democracy represents is actually what they're protecting. That sort of ill-founded anger and hatred is not something desirable in military people...

Now it's MY turn to quote something about the military, from a dude on another message board:

I am reminded of my friend, Jeremy, a 30-something guy with a lazy eye that I played pool with and met through a series of "friends of so-and-so"s. I knew he'd been special forces, as his friend through whom I'd met him was special forces as well. Jeremy told me one night that he had trouble sleeping. We'd both had a few beers, so I figured I'd ask what the problem was. Apparently he was a sniper. Jeremy's killed a great many people. [...] He told me he had many ghosts on his mind, that kept him awake at night. I guess that's one of the drawbacks of being a REAL badass. Well, we were all in this pool hall one night, and one of the military guys was giving me shit for saying that I thought Israel was handling the Lebanon situation shittily. He basically got it in his head that I was a major hippie, despite my objections to such a label (I'm pretty conservative, on any given day). [...] Well, this guy kept coming over and talkign to them (the military guys), because I believe he wanted one of the girls with us. This particular guy had a pony tail, looked kinda grungy, was skinny, and had a shirt that said "Bush: Wanted for Crimes against humanity." With a fake mugshot of George W Bush on it. Well, the grunts and aforementioned dipshit marine officer werent taking too kindly to him and basically told him to fuck off. He was upset, but after they'd left he came back over to talk to us. Jeremy was still there and intercepted him sorta halfway and I watched from a distance, figuring Jeremy would break this kid's head off. After awhile it looked like they were practicing self defense moves or something. So I walk over to them and it turns out the guy's interested in pressure points or something, and Jeremy, having been trained to break every bone known, was giving him some pointers. They talked for a bit and did some Brazilian Jiu-Jistu stuff (which is pretty badass when everyone's drunk in a pool hall) before the skinny dude left. I walked over to Jeremy and said "man, I figured you'd kill that kid with that shirt he had on (I knew Jeremy was a huge bush supporter and conservative)". He smiled at me with that lazy eyed grin and said "hell naw, man. I fought so he could wear that shirt. Don't bother me none."

Able to separate their job from their politics. That's what soldiers should be.

I'm curious, what does this guy think of the ever-increasing anti-war sentiment within the military? Has he ever had to kill anyone personally? Would he beat up a hippie for expressing his views?

Arwon, that story was excellent. On top of what you said, I would like to add that soldiers must be able to function as a team. Randy's friend has such a deep-seated disgust for people who can fall under the broad label of "liberal" that I wonder how well he can work with people with different political views. One of my friends is in the National Guard, and he served in Iraq. He also happens to be gay, A-OK with his orientation, and supportive of rights such as freedom to marry, so I suppose that that qualifies him to be tarred and feathered with the liberal brush. Could my friend trust a teammate or squad leader with his life if the teammate or squad leader thinks he's one of "the dumbest people on earth" who is "taking the pride out of America" and "ruining the traditional values"?

In the perfect world, it is simple to assume that those who serve as defenders of justice, equality, and all that a sovereign stands for represent those values as well as they defend them. These "golden souls", however, are few and far between in what we call the "real world".

In this world we live in, the military is one part these "golden souled" defenders (pray that these are more likely to become the generals of our time), one part self-serving kids looking for benefits like VA welfare and college education, kids who are unlikely to be great soldiers and killers because they're not in it for that; and lastly, people who just have a fire or hatred and want to kill foreigners just to kill, or whatever their motivation to do so (perhaps just to feel better than civilians), because in the end they want to serve for reasons other than to defend values. Altogether, the military is created from these groups and mostly, it works, since there aren't any extremely stirring battles to be fought like there were in the second world war. This is not Socrates' Republic; don't expect soldiers to be perfect little angels who serve your every little expectation and need without resentment or unrest.
It's interesting how I feel like you might be referring mainly to U.S. soldiers, when you don't even live here, but I could be wrong.

I could've SWORN that it was Plato's Republic.

And I mean, no it is no worry when we have crazies in our army! Nop harm or worry of homegrown right wingers trained in the craziness at all! Let's just ignore the recent Belgian example.

Plato wrote the book, Socrates was the character who created the "Republic" in the text, if you've read it. Supposedly the book was based on Socrates' beliefs (although that is disputed a lot among historians). Sorry.

You know...I'm just not going to argue with you on that point. Because I'm...I'm not going to lie. I'm objectively right. You're just wrong. I don't think you need to apologize for being wrong. It just happens. Plato wrote it as a useage of the Socratic dialogue to further his ideas. In it the revered Socrates is merely a character who plays a role in it. All things are created by Plato for the usage and furtherance of his philosophical ideology. Socrates' role is there alright...except he'd been dead for quite a while before the book was written. So...yeah. Don't be sorry.

As for your point...you don't have to live in the U.S. to have a bad time around American soldiers. They have a less then sterling reputation the world round for various aspects of their behaviour (that is not to cast a bad light on them...I have a few friends who WERE in the US army during the 'Nam and they're great people). Besides...How do you know anything about anywhere else but America. You don't live there. I fail to see the logic in how that transmits knowledge.

But that point aside this is a problem common to many nations. I've cited the recent example (however extreme) of what occurred in Belgium. Partisanship and the military must be seperate at pretty much any cost or else the military can act as a political chess piece. And that is nasty as hell. Look at Thailand's history or various other nations where there have been military driven political coupes. Venezuala for instance. Politics + active soldiery ideals = dangerous mix. This isn't a little angelic vision of what should be. It is simply something ought be enforced for the safety of a state.
