I wanted to edit the graphics for startropics but after I was done editing them (I saved! Don't ask if I forgot to.) I played the rom and no graphics were changed. What can I do to get the graphics to change?

BTW I use TLP.

Check and make sure the graphics aren't in more than on place in the rom. If they are, you need to change every occurence.

Are the graphics still changed when you open it back up in TLP?

Are you sure you're using the same copy of the game in your editor as you are in TLP?

1- Yes the graphics are still changed

2- I'm not editing levels. Only graphics.

You're still editing it. In an editor. TLP edits. So it's an editor.

Are you using the same copy of the file in both the editor and TLP?

I mean, not "Emulation\TLP\Game.nes" to edit and "Emulation\Emulator\Game.nes" to play?

Yes.

Heres some pictures to show you.

I edited the graphics to junk as an example. I knew they wouldn't change anyway.

Is the file set to "read only?"

Do you have the ROM open in an emulator while you are editing the graphics in TLP?

Huh, I dunno. I just tried editing it, and it worked fine. You've closed and reopened both the emulator and TLP, right? Have you tried a different emulator, in case that one holds the ROM in memory or something equally weird?

Try saving the ROM under a different filename in TLP. If that doesn't work, your computer is officially haunted.

Well alot of people have said that Startropics has some really hard ASM. Could this make a difference?

You're editing the graphics of the ROM. As in, no matter the ASM, it's going to have to load the graphics you see. That is, unless it's ASM which magically draws the graphics during gameplay [/sarcasm]

Like someone said earlier, your rom might be set to read-only

Check again. I, for one, have been absolutely certain that I've done things in the past and discovered that I forgot to actually do them. Also, make sure that the rom is only opened in TLP while you're editing, and not in your emulator or any other editors. Linux and BSD allow files that are already open to be written, deleted, et cetera -- but I believe Windows does not. It's been a while.

If TLP is a DOS program (if memory serves me, I think I remember that it is), then it may be exempt from that rule -- but it also may simply be oblivious to it and execute the calls to write the file regardless of whether they succeed or fail.

Hope this helps.

I didn't read everything, but 2 random ideas...

-Make sure you're testing the ROM you modified, and not another copy of it. Yes, that sounds stupid, but it's a common mistake.
-Don't load save states (that were made with the original ROM) to check whether your graphics are there or not
