Instead of beating a dead horse with another cliché favourites thread, let's dig those SPC archives for the most ear-molesting piece of crap you can find.

First thing that comes to mind for me is Captain Commando. This is probably Capcom's first SNES game and it clearly shows. It sounds fucking awful. The instrument envelopes are terrible (As clearly heard in the pathetic excuse for an electric guitar) and most of them aren't even tuned right. Some of Capcom's later SNES titles also suffered from this to an extent, like Final Fight and Street Fighter 2 but they don't even come close to this atrocity.

One defining point of bad SNES music I see is where most of the tracks in the game consist of the same samples (instruments more or less). Some examples come to mind:

1. Dragonball Z: Hyper Dimension

While it has maybe 2 semi-listenable tracks, most of it sounds indistinguishable from the next song. Very little creativity and variety here. Weak clap type drums also irritate me.

2. Dragon Quest V

Whereas I think DQ3 (the remake for SNES) and DQ6 have some fairly technically sound and entertaining music, Dragon Quest V sounds like a trainwreck. The instruments remind me of bad MIDI, much of the tracks are uninspired and some are downright annoying. e.g. Slime Race, World of Darkness. The bad synth reminds me of OoT and FFVII's worst moments musically. The only track I enjoyed in this one is "System Menu", which is like saying I enjoyed "Prelude" in a final fantasy game B/C IT'S ALWAYS THE SAME IN ALL FF GAMES.

3. Certain tracks from FFV

FFV:
1.17 Walking the Snowy Mountains (ugh)
1.22 The Fire Powered Ship (I play this part of the game as fast as possible to get away from this shitty music.)
1.25 Ancient Library (I only liked this when I played the game at triple speed)
1.27 Musica Machine (obnoxious)

4. Illusion of Gaia (And SoulBlazer!)

Alarming levels of Mediocrity here. If I were playing this game I'd turn the sound off and put something else on and I never do that. Larai Cliff is the one saving grace for Illusion of Gaia. SoulBlazer is even worse.

5. Megaman 7, Megaman X2 and 3

Some of it is good but most of it is subpar, especially for a Megaman game, which usually has good tunes overall.

also: Rockman & Forte - Magic Man, Wily's Castle, and "Seals" are all puke worthy.

6. Zelda 3 - fortune teller. Just... uninteresting, repetitive, and .... meh

7. X-Kaliber 2097

For a game that they specifically brought a band in to do the music for - I remember the article in Nintendo Power - this game's music sounds nothing like a rock band. They could have made at least made an effort to get some samples that didn't sound like the basic ones that probably came with the dev kit. With better samples or envelopes this might have sounded better, but as is, it's unlistenable. If you have a well made MIDI file but the instruments you use to play it sound like shit, so will the MIDI. Did I mention that each of these songs sounds pretty much the same? Except for, say, Track 6 which is a drum solo. Who's the idiot who thought a drum solo would be a good idea for a SNES game?

anyways I'm sick of searching through my collection for shitty music right now .

8. Shadow Run

Little variety in instruments or themes.

9. Tales of Phantasia - Fiddlers

If there is a hell, I'm going to be listening to this song for an eterinity.

- all from Soul Blazer except for Koibito no Inaiyoru, which is kind of decent
- LoZ3: Fortune Teller
- LoZ3: Guessing-Game House
- FFVI: Johnny C. Bad
- Star Fox 2: all the planet themes except for Eladard and Meteor, which are both kinda sustainable
- Super Mario RPG: Going Shopping in Ripple Town
et al.

Quite a few songs from F-Zero just sounded meh to me....I don't know ;\ Mario Kart's music also got to me a bit, specifically a few select samples which were just too annoying after a certain amount of time (and rainbow road just sdjghsjdghjsd). The Fiddler song was ew, too, thanks for reminding me MoN

Also wasn't a huge fan of EB. I just didn't care for the soundtrack, at all ._. for the most part...can't think of any others right now.

Hey, I'll admit it may have been average, but I really don't think it deserves "worst".

I have a hard time listening to FFV's music even when I'm playing the game. Especially in that port town...s hit, can't remember the name, but it's where you find your first Ice Rod, before you get the Hiryuu off of the mountain.

A lot of the dungeon musics of Breath of Fire get on my nerves really fast. All three overworld musics and the first regular battle music are quite good (only saying that so it doesn't sound like I'm dissing ALL of the music).

Uhh... Bubsy II. While the first one kicks ass, this one sucks ass. Almost every music piece in this game is absolutely awful to me. (I won't even go onto the physics and hufguhdsguhgsdfuhdfiu)

Lastly, the opening theme of Tetris Attack really makes me want to mash start as fast as possible. I find it irritatingly high-pitched, and it's comparable to my hate for the opening theme of Yoshi's Story, to a lesser degree.

If anything else strikes my memory, I'll edit this post or post again.

You're probably talking about "Harvest" and Karwen Town. And yes, that song is terrible... it has an annoying old-irish type sound.

old irish on bad drugs, I'm ashamed of MathonNapkins for mentioning FFV music and not highlighting that track.

And also for saying Megaman 7's music was subpar, but giving no mention to the ear-splitting monstrosity that is the shop music.

I don't like the Axem rangers chasing song in Super Mario RPG. It starts cool but then it's really repetitive.

I almost listed it. But ... I just couldn't bring myself to. I know it's really bad, but I still think the ones I listed are a lot worse by comparison.

Hmm...

Super Tetris 3 - Hidden Computer Player :: Oh my god is this repetitive.

Megaman X - Sigma Fortress Stage #4 :: Failure of musical ingenuity.

Rockman and Forte - Upper Boss Battle :: Ugh. Kill them fast. Music...irritating.

R-Type - Anything practically :: Now, I think all of these have some merit...in fact I almost listed some of these with the BEST thread...but their loop patterns blow hardcore.

Super Valis IV - Intro :: Ugh. Now the rest of the music isn't half bad but...ugh. Horrible eyecatch. In fact, that whole game is actually the worst port to a game from a seperate console ever made I think and it was STILL relatively decent.

I'll post more later if I think about it.

Johnny C Bad is amazing, probably my favorite track from FFVI. Shame on you.

most of the Gundam games for SNES have horrible music. Save for Endless Duel.
