YAY

Well, after not being involved with surf lifesaving since 2003 or maybe at the latest 2004, I've finally managed to get back into things.

On this weekend just past, I got "proficient" again, and am now a patrolling member of the Seacliff Surf Lifesaving Club.

For those of you who have no idea what Surf Lifesaving is, here are some pictures at Google Images and a Wikipedia Article.

On the weekend, I got "proficient", which meant I had to pass a series of tests to basically prove that I can competently save lives. I had to learn the current procedure for resuscitation, be tested on how to use the Oxygen equipment for oxygen-assisted resuscitation as well as an oropharyngeal airway (a little tube you put down people's throat to make sure they have a clear airway). I also had to do a run-swim-run (100m run, 200m swim, another 100m run) and a rescue.

I passed all of it, although only just with the run-swim-run, as there is a time restriction and I had trouble running fast enough. I need to work on running and get up my cardiovascular fitness.... running is hard work! My swim was okay.

Course, with all this testing, I did manage to get myself nice and sunburned too... I posted a photo (zomg nude photo) in the Photo Album thread showing off some fairly good medium-brown / pink sun-burned flesh.

I'm happy I finally managed to get my shit together again and get back into it Now I just get to patrol again... first patrol is next Sunday.

Been a while since I patrolled, this oughta be fun And by "fun" I mean I think I remember it being hard work some of the time, and then dull as hell the rest of the time.... bleh...

Yay me!
Cynthia

Uh-huh.

Too bad it doesn't pay anything.

But in any case, good job! Just work a bit on your running and go out there knowing that you can still do this.

Heh. I sure hope I get rehired for my TA job.

Sounds good; while I can swim strongly, the ocean hates me. 'Nuff said.

Hey, do you think a picture of me in my Surf Lifesaving uniform could go in the Costume thread? After all, I'm apparently an "Aussie Icon", the sun-bronzed Aussie Surf Lifesaver. Hmm??

I think I will try to post a photo of me in my uniform later

And ocean swimming is definitely quite different from pool swimming. In pool swimming you never have to think about swimming to adjust for any rip or other currents, and you get your own lane so you don't have to worry about swimming amongst the pack / fighting your way around a buoy. There's no jellyfish to watch out for, and no waves to duck under / cause you to swallow water / bodysurf in.

Surf swimming is awesome

Stupid sun. Though you're lucky that it's getting to be summer there.

Good to know you're out and about and having fun.

Congratulations Taryn, that's great news

If you do go on patrol again, can you earn money?

No, it's not a job... it's a volunteer organization. I can uh... do it for uh.. the glory? I dunno, I keep the beaches safe, I may or may not save a life, help an injured person, ensure people swim in the safest area, save somebody who is in distress... etc.

Or I might just sit on the beach hungover for several hours and get severely sunburned.

So... you can either do important things while in your uniform or just look important. Tough choice.

Hmm... I'm not sure if lying down on the beach asleep really counts as "looking important". In fact, I tend to do it as hidden as possible so I don't look as hungover and hopeless as I am
