I don't believe in God or his punishments, or Hell for that matter. Every crime should be punished in life. He should have been kept in torture one day for every person he unfairly killed, which means the rest of his life.

Well, he isn't a martyr. Not even the Shia will make him that. However, the prevailing idea that his execution was a Shiite manouver and the revelations of people yelling at him on the gallow's table will only continue to exacerbate conditions on that sectarian front. This move is one of unbelievable ineptitude.

Capital punishment just seems pointless to me. It doesn't do anything. It isn't punishment. They're to dead to notice that they're punished.

Iraq has the death penalty. Saddam committed crimes that under Iraqi law warrant the death penalty. Therefor he was put to death.

I don't see what the big debate is here. Should they have made a special exemption just for him?

Yes. They should've tortured him in public.

Well, given the political climate wherein the rule of law is not yet established it would be best to assert a policy of non-exacerbation instead of instantly sinking to do a poorly driven execution to smooth over relations with Kurds and Shia at the expense of a mighty pissed off Sunni minority. It also risks other political implications across the rest of the Sunni world. In sectarianist Iraq Saddam was hated. But he was a Sunni.

Actually the idea with Hiroshima and Nagasaki was that they either dropped the bombs or continued into a war with probably more casualties.

Yeah, turning something metaphorical into something literal sometimes isn't the smartest thing to do.

On the topic the NYTimes had some interesting insight into the issue here http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/01/world/middleeast/01sunnis.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

No, because that's not the law.

The rule of law may not be fully established, but the death penalty was reinstated over two years ago. Executing Saddam may be considered an attempt appease certain groups, and it may be, but its just carrying out Iraqi law. Making a special exemption just for Saddam, is circumventing Iraqi law, and would defiantly be just an attempt to appease Sunnis.

If torturing him in public is not the law, then it should be the law. Do they even have a working congress to make such a law?

Why, so that the US could have been maligned and demonized for the act more than it already was?

Yes, if your country has hidden crime statistics. Otherwise, it doesn't do much.

Public torture is actually very effective. In Thailand, people found guilty of vandalism get whipped in public, and vandalism is almost nonexistent in thailand.

Ummm, got some statistics on that? Last I checked canings were popular all across South East Asia. Many of those countries are host to a naughty bunch of young rapscallions.
