I feel sympathy for Sadaam Hussein. I would never order him to be killed for what he did. We all know what he has done, or at least a fairly accurate description of events that led to his downbringing, but does anything really constitute a human being killed to make things right?

One word: Exile?

Well he did kill tens of thousands Kurds throughout the mid-eighties, and tens of thousands more (as well as tens of thousands of Shiites) in 1991. Even being against the death penalty, I can't see feeling sorry for the guy.

Perhaps you should be the one to pull the lever the day he is hanged? Could you do it? I don't think you, me, or anyone discussing this thread could do it without massive remorse.

Picture yourself in front of a crowd of people, thousands of people, fighting with each other because some believe he should live and some say he should die. Now look at Sadaam Hussein, his head hung low waiting for you to pull the lever that releases the floor beneath his feet.

Now pull the lever and watch his neck snap as the platform disappears beneath him. Or maybe it didn't kill him immediately, and now you have to watch him asphyxiate and convulse before he finally dies.

I would probably wish I was the one wearing the noose afterwards.

Edit: Fixed a typo.

I can say with complete honesty that I would have no problem pulling that lever (assuming these things are lever operated).

Although I could think of worse and more fitting punishments, this was his sentence, and if I didn't do it, someone else will.

According to psychological studies, "pulling the lever" in front of the crowd would be the easiest thing to do. If part of a crowd, one loses much individualism, and the voice of the crowd tends to be the one opinion of everyone, even if they don't support that opinion. It's in a study of following higher-up's rules as well. I'll find an example of the studies when I pick up my psych book next time. Or not.

Point being, nothing on this planet is good enough for Saddam's fate. Which is why we need to send him on a ship to the sun. Full of enough revisions to keep him alive the entire way, and prevent him from being able to go any any hunger strike of sorts.

*not joking*

We'd have to save up all the biggest murderers and put them in the ship, one person would be a huge waste. More would make it a lesser waste...

What do you mean? That the Iraqi people or Iraqi government proved that they aren't a true democratic country because they killed Saddam?

Because it only proves a slavish desire for blood that they should rise above.

This isn't about democracy, this is about relative pride.

I'm not interested in any articles from the economist. You've got to make your own points rather than referring to the political columnists to do your thinking for you. Killing Saddam was never about democracy. It was about justice. That should be plainly clear.

I'm more interested in hearing what you have to say, then reading an article. Trust me, I've seen debate threads turn into link posting threads. They get tedious and boring real fast.

I've said what I believe.

That this is a slavish and brutish act. And that it is nothing more than another drop of blood into an ocean.

If he gets to used one of the world's most erudite and respected publications, I'm going to use a cheap cliparted internet comic which, while several years old, seemed appropriate:

(Also: Koryo's just mad all he could do is post links to Free Republic)

What should the Iraqis have done with him? Kept him in jail forever, where he would have been given better food and more security than the average Iraqi citizen has? Exile is not an option either. We know what happens when people like khomeini and Arafat are exiled. The Iraqis suffered under Saddam, and they have every right to kill him. It's not as if they had him drawn and quartered, or stoned him to death (which is actually not an uncommon practice among some Muslims).

Edit:
I don't read the Free Republic. I could get into a link posting debate but, as I said, those are no fun.
I find that cartoon a bit offensive.

Exile? I was thinking extradition to another nation. Keep him in prison somewhere else.

Yet again we are left with the prospect of Saddam having a better life than many of the Iraqis (the ones he didn't kill). If the Iraqis want him dead, its their right. If Saddam had killed any of your family, you would feel differently.

Yeah, he didn't though. He didn't kil yours. And really, democracy isn't equatable to death. I just don't see a causality between democracy and a right-to-murder idea.

I'm honestly surprised you don't read Free Republic. The Freepers are ground-zero for the sort of China-paranoid gung-ho democracy-crusaders you pretty much reflect.
