Remember, this isn't a "how do i hax" or editor request thread.
Alright, let's get started. Anyone who emulates Playstation realizes that it is easiest to play these games via CD-Rom. Basically none of the data can be copied from the disk (or at least not with any of the technology I have on my computer). There may be roms, but I haven't bothered looking for any. So, my question being, in all likelyhood, will it ever be possible to hack any games regarding the PSX. Considering that if you were to save any data to or from the disk, it would stay like that. Although I have barely gotten started on any internal rom formatting without the use of a specific editor, I still think this is a pipedream that I hope somebody will some day accomplish. I realize that nobody has even hardly began on titles such as Super Smash Brothers (which is would be a lot easier, considering that it's saved in a cartriage), so I know that this will take a long time. What does anybody else think? |

There's ISO's of the games (exact copies of the CD's), which can then be used like CD's and later modified ... so you just work on those and forget about real CD's for a while
It's just like ROMs, except bigger, and a single ISO can contain many files ... |

In relation to the topic, you must understand how data is stored on a PSX disc, how it came to be in that format, and how you can draw a logical conclusion to evidence you have found on the format.
As far as I know, Cidolfas had made a document on the subject, you can probably find it at http://www.romhacking.net |

I realize that the disks contain many files, and I'm pretty sure I know how they're stored. I've tried working with ISO files, but due to the level of crap of my computer, I haven't really downloaded any. I tried downloading things as Torrents, but that was taking too long (3.1 days to be precise), and I can't just leave my computer on because I'm connected through an internet card to Actiontec, and it likes to stop working now and then.
I need to start with easier fromats, though. It would be a while before I would attempt doing this. |

3.1 days isn't that bad for the setup you've got going. I've had to wait longer for certain things due to bad-health torrents.

I'm rather impatient. I get frustrated downloading N64 roms.

It would be possible to seek out and modify certain files or sectors in a CD ISO of a known format. It depends on the game, I suppose; something with NTFS-accessible files like, say, Final Fantasy VII, would most likely be much easier than a game like Chrono Cross, whose file system is encrypted in such a way as to be unreadable without some serious modifications.
With an easier game like FF7, if you were capable of un-packing and re-packing an ISO file (I'm sure there are libraries out there), and knew the files on the disc you needed to change, it would be pretty simple. The resulting iso can be played using something like Daemon Tools, without wasting a CD. |

WinRAR does. Just use that. It's the only archiving program I ever use.

Fun fact: ROMs contain "files" too. N64 has MIO0 and stuff, and the GBA's LZ77 data can be considered "files" too. I think I heard both being referred to as "files" before, too!
And then there's the GBFS homebrew system, also used on the NDS. |

I did find what looked like level data for SOTN, but the problem is that loading the file up into a rom corruptor takes like 5 miniutes, and and extra 3 or 4 for each search. Oh yeah, not to mention the time it takes to load the PSX file into hex workshop.

12MB, thank you.
I don't really plan on doing that for a while, if ever. I've only begun on simpler games. Right now, I'm trying my luck on Kirby's Adventure. Also, downloading is sort of different than actually exploring. It's not like I just sit there and wait until it's done downloading. But the spyware doesn't help. |

I downloaded an editor from Zophar a few months back and it did some weird crap to my computer.
It turned it off. Just flat out turned off. It didn't take me long to decide what the problem was though. I can't exactly remember what the program was but that was my last attempt at an editor other than HEX. I don't think I'll ever get around to learning how to hack other than the basic HEX hacking. I'll probably just be one of those guys who never says anything useful in here except for opinions and praise. |

That generally indicates a problem with the computer; bad power supply, overheating, etc. |
