| If you have a portable music player, what type? How do you like it?
If you're interested in getting one, what would you prefer? Which features are important to you? I just got a 2 gig iPod Nano. I mainly wanted something inobtrusive with a nice interface to take with me to the gym or out jogging. I did not need tons of space or the capability to handle file formats other than mp3. I heard that the iPods interfaced especially well with iTunes, and I use iTunes to manage my music because it is easy to use yet powerful (at least from my point of view). I had also gotten to play with a Nano in Best Buy. I liked the design of its interface, and I thought it felt pretty solid for being so small. Tonight, I loaded it up with some music and took it out for its first workout. It behaved exactly like I had hoped. I was able to strap it onto my arm and forget about it until I had to adjust volume (silly me forgot to set playlist volume for all my songs first), which was as easy as sliding a finger along the touch-sensitive wheel. Before the Nano, I had been thinking about a Shuffle because it was a "chuck it on and forget about it" nonentity and I didn't think I would want to take more than one playlist with me at a time, but I'm glad I got a Nano instead because I like being able to put a ton of my favorite music on it and choose between playlists, albums, etc. |

I got an iPod 4g 20GB black/white last Christmas, and it's still working great. I use it both as a portable hard disk (Portable lololol!  ) and for a ton (8GB) of music. With some of the advances of iPodLinux, I've kicked myself for not getting a photo at the time (iPL = full speed video (without the fifth generation!), Doom, etc). However, I bought it for music and it hasn't failed at that yet.
I wasn't concerned about iTunes dependency, as I already did research beforehand and found GNUpod (I use GNU/Linux; also it allowed me to see how well it does for adding music to an iPod before I even got the device). I've always used GNUpod since I got my iPod. There was one time (May or June; somewhere) I booted into Windows to see how iTunes really is. For some reason it deleted the iTunesDB database file  Luckily, GNUpod stores info mainly an an XML file (GNUtunesDB.xml) to minimize handling of the binary format to two programs; so effectively I just booted back into GNU/Linux, plugged in my iPod, and ran mktunes.pl in order to recreate the binary file without scanning each and every MP3 on the player (as all other iPod programs would have to do).
How much can I rant on about my iPod? Luckily not much more . . . |

| Well, I donīt have one but I plan to get an mp3 player with a shuffle function.
Iīd like it to be of a good brand so Creative would be nice but I donīt know if it has a shuffle function. It should have at least 512mb memory. Colored display doesnīt matter as long I can see the text. Maybe Ipod shuffle would be a nice choice. |

I've seen lots of people complain about it, but it works like great for me, and I get a battery life of 15 hours. I like the pointless features it has. |

| I would very much like an iPod although that might have to wait... I doubt my parents will want to spend THAT much on me come Christmas. Plus they'll also likely rank clothes ahead of an iPod.
If I had a bunch of cash and wanted one, I'd probably go with the 30GB model. There's only a $50 (American) difference between the 4GB Nano and the 30GB regular, and that's enough right there to justify the upgrade. |

Trapster - If you want a display, you probably won't want an iPod Shuffle.  The Shuffle is basically meant to be used with one selection of music at a time. The Creative Zen Micro is small, but it has a display and a shuffle feature. If you want a small player but the Nano winds up being out of your budget, this may work for you.
Colin - Remember when an iPod cost $400 and had 5 gigs of storage? Ah, the wonders of technological advancement. I would have gone for a larger model if the size and weight of the player had not been so important to me. I have a Diamond Rio sitting around somewhere that was originally made as a "drag music to the gym" purchase, but it was a rather heavy lump that could not be carried in any inobtrusive way. I had to stuff it in the pocket of my gym shorts, and it bounced, which got very annoying. I was never able to find an armband for it, but I doubt that would have helped.
On a general note - Any recommendations for headphones that stay put while you jog? I tried ones that clip over your ears, but they bounce because my ears stick out. I also tried some $20ish Sony earbuds that Rando had lying around, but they were even worse, falling out of my ears at times because I could not securely wedge them in there to begin with. I haven't yet tried the buds that came with the iPod. |

Oh, I can totally understand the weight/size concerns.  But if I get an iPod, I'd want it to listen to music at home/during school commute/at school/etc. So it's not like I'll be running around and feeling very uncomfortable at the same time.
Back then, however, everyone figured that 5GB was all you needed. Now 30GB should be *more* than plenty if you just want to use it for music. I can't see the vast majority of people managing to fill that up, much less a 60GB. |

| I don't know if it counts, but my portable music player is my PSP It's only got 1GB of storage, although that changes to about 950MB, when you consider that the system files, emulators, ROMs and such stuff like that take up a fair amount of space.
Right now I've got several Christmas songs, everything made by DJ Zero that I've been able to find, the entire Tales of Symphonia soundtrack, my favorite OCRemix songs, and several other files on it. There's about 160MB of free space right now, although I do plan on deleting the Tales of Symphonia songs, as they take up 313MB alone I did have plans to buy some sort of MP3 player as soon as I had the money to do so, but given that I've got a PSP now, I don't think I will be.
Most of the time I've listened to music on it so far, I've been outdoors, so I've had to use the headphones. The first couple times I put them on, I was surprised at how much better the music sounded with them on. I guess that's what happens when you rarely ever listen to music using those type of things Having the little remote control type thing is handy as well, as it's more convenient to be able to lock the buttons on the PSP, slip it into the case, which goes into my pocket, and then change the volume / song that's playing with it instead.
The only thing I don't like is the battery life, but that's something I was aware of well before I bought it. Overall, I'm quite happy with it, even if it really doesn't count as a portable music player

| I have the 30GB iPod Video (Black)
So far I have 5 GB's filled but that is roughly 25% of my music. I like the fact that you can put pictures in it and make slideshows. Though, I have yet to put any videos. I wanted to put my RvB episodes but I don't think I can. It's cool. I use it for when I am around and such, away from home, also when I am running. |
