I think the longest I've ever run my PC is slightly more a week, when scripting with an online game (a GUI-based menu clicking...type...one...). As of right now, however, I am unable to break this record, as my computer is restarting by itself semi-randomly due to a fault in the power supply or something. I'll spare you the details, but I've had such a problem before, and even spoke about it.

I think the longest I've left my computer on is more than a week. I did that recently because I was downloading a bunch of torrents.

Huh, 4 and a half days, I used to have my Jukebox on, all day and night. Sadly, that computer dyed...

On this computer, the record must be around ~30 hours, due to doing a Scandisk+Defrag+Antispyware+Antivirus...

My Fileserver's been up for a month today. It went down when all the electricity in the house went bye bye.

I've only had to restart the Fileserver 3 times all year. It's a fairly reliable little computer. My desktop machine is powered down frequently cause it's in my bedroom and it's noisy. Sometimes this doesn't worry me at all, but some nights it pisses me off, so I turn it off.

My iBook is seldom rebooted, but it does sleep a lot.

A week and a half as of now, if you count standby.

My old computer sounded like a rocket engine so I usually turned it off at night while I lived at home.

I don't keep my computer on overnight, unless I'm trying to finish a torrent or I'm doing a system scan or something. It just seems like a waste to me, as it's a laptop and therefore has to be plugged in to charge all night. I turn it off when I go to sleep, and turn it on when I get home from school.

It restarted after a power flicker a few days ago, but before that my MythTv box (running Knoppix Linux) had been running for months. I'm not sure how many though, but atleast three or four.

I probably haven't had any computer running for more than ~12 hours. Yeah, I have never left them on overnight. And now, since I'm using a laptop, uptime is even lower.

Uhm, technically that's how only how long the CPU been idle in CPU time neotransuko.

It says 305:44:06 right now on mine, but that wouldn't include when the computer is actually in use. Intresting to see how much your computer isn't used over a number of days...

It does say that I been connected to the network for 21 days, although it happened that I disconnected from the network here at short moments rarely in mornings, probably maintance.

I just leave my computer on all the time, except when I install something that requires restarting or something; but even then I just restart it, I don’t leave it off (I wander if that’s why the power supply goes bad so often). I had to restart it a few days ago, but it could have been on for a few months before that.

Thats a major power drain there.

For me, Ive never done it but I know my cousins were told by gateway to leave there computer on all the time. So bassically I'd have to say for them, since they got there computer in uh... 1999... then that means about 7 years... not including power outages which I don't know about.

Not really, I doubt it uses much more then 75 watts or so at idle and maybe 100 more while recording and encoding. The whole point is for it to run 24/7, so it can record shows at times when I might be asleep or at work.

I really doubt they haven't had to restart after a new install or an update for Windows.

"Leaving your computer on all the time" simply means to keep it powered on - restarting doesn't matte. And remember: XP wasn't out at that time, and Windows updates isn't a part of that system. You don't necesaarily need to install things regularly too: and I don't see those people doing so.

It derives from a school of thought that when your computer is on, the wiring is hot, and when it is off, it is cold. However, eventually, the soldered wires supposedly become brittle from the temperature change and eventually crack. Another school of thought says that although that is true, leaving the computer on all the time can wear out your hard drive quicker and cause the cooling fan to die a premature death. You just can't win, so ideally, you should turn it off once a day.
