Well, their loss I guess.

Swimming is one of the best exercises I can think of.

It builds endurance, muscle strength, posture, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. Because you're in water and it takes the pressure off of joints, it's good for people with injuries that prevent them from doing exercise like walking and running. It can help reduce high blood pressure. It's fantastic for trying to lose weight. It works out many, MANY muscles all over your body. The health benefits of swimming are almost unmatched by any other sport, and cause you're in water there's no stress on bones, joints, etc so there's a low risk of injury too.

Course, I'm currently experiencing the fun all-over body ache I've only ever been able to get from swimming or martial arts But that's not injury, that's normal when you start a new exercise your muscles aren't used to.

I swam 1.2km today, and I swam faster than yesterday. Not too bad considering I haven't been swimming for a year.

Tarale's right, swimming is one of the best exercises, period. I kinda feel like I should get into it, but, I've never been a strong swimmer and I'm not a big fan of the beach.

I injured myself a bunch of times this year. I tried going to do the weights last week. Oh, fuck, christ.

I started on a light bench press of 175. Ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch. I got to 10 and was just like "WTF".

I'm going to wait until the new year to start working out again. I must heal.

Yeah, I'm "or martial arts" and that all-over ache is every minute of every day.
...it feels kinda nice .

But yeah... thanks to seven hours a week of olympic taekwondo pratice, my legs are rediculously muscular and toned. However, I've lost fourty pounds over the last year, so I'm kinda flabby around the stomach. Whole torso, really.

And it bugs me.

I'm really sick of doing situps and twisty situps. Anyone got any other good recomendations for stomach exercise?

I'm also going to go with swimming being one of your best bets. You don't want to do any weight training because that doesn't burn fat and makes the problem areas bulkier, which pushes the fat out...which makes you look even bigger.

Aerobics and light cross training are the way to go.

I've been gaining some weight lately as well. been managing my eating disorder pretty well. I'm about to start swimming laps again every other day when school starts back. I'll have to switch to running over holidays, but as long as I can get myself into half decent shape in the next 2 weeks that won't be so bad.

Hmm... I've never really found a good alternative to crunches. Last time I was working on tone I was doing 1000 a night, spread out between sets of push-ups.

I guess you couls also suspend yourself from bars and do leg lifts. I do that from time to time at the gym.

See, I've heard the opposite -- that weight training can help you burn fat. The reason being is that muscle is metabolically active, and needs energy. Fat on the other hand doesn't.

I've been gaining weight a bit recently, although I think I've lost a touch the last week too. I think the weight I gained was some more muscle... I hope the weight I lost was fat.

I kept meaning to post in here...

To answer the question from way back when about what you do to stay in shape, I do some form of challenging resistance training, whether it's heavy weight lifting or tough calisthenics that are about as difficult. Right now, I'm working on a bodyweight routine called Round and Round with the goal of being able to complete Workout A. (Currently I can finish up to and including the round of 8 without any breaks. Weeee.) I do that three times a week along with some cardio on the elliptical machine. I've started working up to a squat 5-rep max once a week because the leg exercises in Round and Round are more endurance-oriented, and lifting heavy stuff is fun. Diet-wise, I generally know how to eat to maintain my body composition without having to count calories. The foundation of my diet is filling, nutritionally dense foods (cottage cheese, fake meat, vegetables, beans, high-fiber cereal, etc.), and it's difficult to overeat those sorts of foods unless I really try. I allow myself beer and treats on a regular basis, though. If my pants start getting tight, then I diet until they fit.

Squash Monster - Congratulations on the improved fitness and fat loss. I like doing rollouts with an ab wheel (one of those things that looks like a tricycle wheel with a handle through the middle). They're cheap and they work. I also find that my abs get plenty of work through my usual exercises (dive bomber pushups, regular pushups, chinups, heavy squats). Also, if your midsection is squishy due to extra bodyfat, you'll have to keep losing fat in order to get the look you want. Ab exercises will strengthen the muscles, and that can tighten your midsection to some extent because well-conditioned muscles won't tend to pooch out, but they won't get rid of the fat on top.

Weight training does effectively burn fat because it jacks up your metabolism. Recovering from a tough weight training session requires a significant amount of energy. Because fat loss boils down to maintaining a caloric deficit - that is, burning more than you take in and keeping it up over a period of time - anything that helps you use more energy is going to make it easier to lose fat.

Furthermore, putting on a significant amount of muscle mass requires a caloric surplus, which somebody isn't going to have if they're on a fat loss diet. If you're female, and you aren't a genetic freak and/or on steroids, it's especially difficult to get HYOOOOGE. Now, when you start a weight training regimen (or change your routine), your muscles may retain glycogen during the adjustment period, and this may make you look bigger. Many people confuse this with increased muscle mass, but it's not.

Oh, and congratulations on the ED management progress. It's good to hear that you are working on healthy eating and exercise habits.

Ryd's probably going to have to most formal approach to it.

I've dropped to goal weight (there was a thread by Rydain made about a year ago about this kind of stuff) by burning it on DDR. I'm not talking just passing some time looking like some reject stomping arrows on a machine though, either.

Additionally, though, I did bike quite a bit. I've got a Mongoose over here and the hills in Arkansas are killer. I dropped 30 lbs. doing this stuff and I'm holding steady as it is right now.

I've actually put some serious effort into both that and the machine and it's really shown in at least the lower ab to leg region. Now my only problem is I need to work on upper body. But if you want something from the waist down, especially with complex turning and high speeding, get good at that game. It's a fun way to kill time and burn at the same time. A lot of people won't believe me about it, but I've seen 300 lb. men drop to 170 on that game alone.

There again, though, only lower half. That and you need to know how to do hard 9-footers on DDR and ITG for it to really start showing through. That and get to an arcade that doesn't suck for pad upkeep. I've grown a lil wiser in the way arcade machines are made, at least. :\
