Seeing as how this is generally where all the body-image / body-improvement stuff goes... I suspect this is a lot of a Rydain kinda question

I've lost a lot of weight, but the tops of my arms still appear big and well... flabby... My belly's far from flat, and let's not talk about my arse and thighs...

I walk 6km a day, so I'm still losing weight, and feeling fitter and stuff, but those three problem areas still suck.

So I've been trying some weight -ey stuff.

For my thighs and butt, I'm trying to do squats. Also known as "that thing where Taryn falls over and gets up again" cause I'm real good at it. I also walk, and do some stairs.

For my belly, I've been doing this Pilates thing where I just kinda stand there with my gut sucked in and breathe into my chest a few times. I have also been doing crunches and sit ups and some bridging.

For my upper arms, I've been playing with these cute little 1.5kg dumbells I have for my RSI / wrist stuff, and using them for some kickbacks and tricep extensions.

I'm also skipping rope, but I haven't the faintest what if anything that tones up, it just gets my heartrate up, and I figure my heart could do with something more demanding than a very fast 6km walk sometimes.

So... what are you guys trying to tone up? Anything? Anyone got any pointers to get rid of my bingo wings, my muffin top and my thunder thighs?

You want to know the fastest way to lose weight? Sex...seriously. Depending on how "rigorous" you get you can burn a crapload of calories. Oh, and swimming is supposed to be good too.

1) Have sex.
2) Swim
3) If Option 2 is unavailable refer back to 1.

You're fucking kidding... right?

To tone, use low weights but high reps. Not really sure if there's anymore I can say on the matter.

20 minutes of having sex, burns 128 calories... that's not that much.

Doesn't... having sex... depend a lot on you having somebody to have sex with?

I don't think I'm in a position to have a relationship, nor will I enter into one until I feel that I am. So sex is kinda out, cause I 'aint payin for it.

But as for what I'm doing, it's mostly just having a go at the moment. Trying a few things out, seeing how I go with it. Trying to make sure I at least work it into my routine and do it. Once I've gotten that little hurdle out of the way I'll start doing more reps, but right now I just had a go at things, did stuff till I felt a little bleh, and went for a 6km walk after.

The backs of both legs are a touch stiff today from something I did yesterday (so uh... walking, jumping rope and squats are the only things I did with my legs) Nothing too bad, but I expect more sore as I progress. I also expect it to get better after a little bit of miscellaneous minor owies.

I'm also willing to accept a little bit of pain. I used to when I was a kid and I'd train up to 10 times a week, it's just that I've gotten slack and soft since.

The only thing I want to try to avoid, very very much so is the slightly broad shouldered look I had as a teen though. Think "Female Olympic Swimmers' Body" (because at least 5 times a week I was swimming, and at least another 2 times I was doing upper body exercise like paddling a surf ski and paddling a surf rescue board). I'd kinda like to avoid or minimize that look if I can...

Trust me, you'd never have to pay. There are thousands of guys out there that would take the opportunity instantly

Anyway, get a Bowflex. Those things really work.

I'd like to point out that you're posting this on a forum mostly inhabited by pale computer nerds, the majority of witch are the shape of either an oval or a thin stick. The chances of you getting really good advice, other than from one or two specific board members, is pretty slim. I'm sure there are some fitness-dedicated sites and message boards that you could use in order to help you.

I'd also like to go back in time and abort Koitenshin, but I guess I won't get help with that here either.

I'm not actually after much help (although some pointers from Rydain would be handy) as I have done sufficient research elsewhere and have some familiarity (if just a bit fuzzy now with time) of weight training from my past. I'm not silly enough to rely on help exclusively from here.

But it's probably not a good idea to describe the majority of the users of this forum as out-of-shape (in one way or another) nerds. You don't know for sure... I certainly don't know who here is fit or not I just see text.

I also asked if anyone else here is doing anything to tone up...

He actually hit the pale part right on the button for me... but as far as oval or stick... nah, I don't think so. I'm actually very fit... for being a computer nerd anyway, and could of actually played sports at a college level if I wanted to.

I wouldn't recommend a bowflex... if you are going to lift any weights... I've found those to be very unnatural feeling... plus the cost is unbelievable. I don't see how anybody could use them. I'm all for the free weights, especially dumbbells.

I know for your stomach there are a whole bunch of crunches you can do that could work it. My girlfriend does this series of crunches which she calls the "ultimate ab workout" which consists of her barely lifting herself off the ground a couple hundred times... it seems to do the job.

As far as the arms go... I would just do some curls/tricep extensions and get your biceps and triceps built up... I would think the muscle definition would eventually overtake any of your flab... and I would assume the same for your thighs... although I'm no exercise instructor or anything.

Well he didn't get me at all. I'm neither pale nor round/skinny twig. I am actually in shape. Took me a while to break my old habits but I did it. I'd play WoW until my eyes bleed but I'm not paying for it. And I won't play until Mango's software is fixed.

After looking up a Bowflex I've found it's some kind of a machine, which I don't want. I intend to purchase some free weight stuff later -- but at a cost of at least $160 it's not something I can afford at the moment anyway.

At the moment I am making do with the following, which will be fine for.. a little while...
* skipping rope
* towel to use folded up as a mat on the floor
* 2 x 1.5kg little baby dumbbells
* kitchen chair
* a single step out the front of the house

I will not be purchasing any machines. Besides, I haven't the space for one anyway. Low tech, not-too-much-space-using things only. My home is tiny, and I am poor.

$16/month for a Bowflex isn't unbelievable. As for unnatural, yeah, I'll give you that. It may be akward, but it definitely works.

*Raises hand*

But you're doing far better than I am with it, in terms of dedication. Heh.

I do know that repetition is what tones muscles, so whatever you're doing (dumbells, situps, etc) just do high repetition on a daily basis. If you can keep that up for a few months, I'm sure your body will look more toned.

I'd also like to echo wite, whoever made that "SEX IS BEST LOLLZZZ" comment should be aborted.

The sex thing is funny. Sure, it burns some energy, but I don't think it actually tones anything... so it's a touch off-topic.

As for repetition, I'm working up to it at the moment. At the moment as I've said, I'm more concerned with getting it into my routine, so that it becomes a part of my life, something that I do regardless. The next step is more focus on repetition.

The idea isn't to do this for a few months -- the idea is to make this an ongoing part of my life and maintain a certain level of strength, tone and fitness.

Besides, fitness routines are kinda calming... the walk certainly is. I can start out all angry and stuff from work or the current debt stuff at the start of the walk, and furiously walk along... and as I walk I calm down and by the end I'm all kinda.. relaxed... in a slightly exhausted kind of way

Mum made me swim this morning. I only managed to do 1km before my acid reflux made it hard and I had to stop.

Now I'm soooo sore in my upper arms and inner thighs.

Exercise hurts Hope it gets better soon, I'm such a marshmallow...
